A power supply is a device that supplies electrical energy to one or more electric loads.

All electronic circuits need a power supply source to work.

A regulated power supply is one that controls the output voltage or current to a specific value

Every power supply must obtain the energy it supplies to its load, as well as any energy it consumes while performing that task, from an energy source.

Page 4: Power Supply

The input is in 120V at 60Hz AC power line. Alternately, the input may be 240VAC.

Convert AC supply to DC supply. An ideal constant-voltage power supply would

have zero output impedance at all frequencies. The voltage would remain perfectly constant in

spite of any changes in output current demanded by the load.

The ideal constant-current power supply would accommodate a load resistance change by altering its output voltage by just the amount necessary to maintain its output current at a constant value.

a device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another through inductively coupled conductors.

Commonly used to step the input AC voltage level down or up.

Transformers are essential for high-voltage electric power transmission, which makes long-distance transmission economically practical.

Page 7: Power Supply

Is an electrical device that converts alternating current (AC), which periodically reverses direction, to direct current (DC), which flows in only one direction.

Rectifier are made up of diodes.

The process is known as rectification.

Filters are electronic circuits which perform signal processing functions

To remove unwanted frequency components from the signal, to enhance wanted ones, or both.

Filter comprising one or more capacitors, resistors, and sometimes inductors.

Is a circuit that helps maintain a fixed or constant output voltage.

Voltage ratio of transformation can be adjusted, or an electronic circuit that produces a defined voltage.

The regulator fixes the output voltage to the desired level then maintains that value despite any output or input variations.

Most modern power supplies contain one or more DC-DC converters.

A DC-to-DC converter is an electronic circuit which converts a source of direct current (DC) from one voltage level to another.

Is used with a power supply to prevent the need for a second AC-DC supply.

All electronic circuits and equipment need a power supply.

Most equipment uses an AC to DC power supply.

In most AC to DC supplies, the 120VAC line is first filtered the stepped up or down to the desired voltages level then rectified into pulsating DC, then filtered to a constant DC. A regulator holds the outputs to a desired level. A DC-DC converter may also be used to generate another DC voltage.
