XP Power is a leading international provider of power

solutions to the healthcare equipment market. With over 25%

of revenue coming from healthcare customers, XP has beenproviding solutions for well over a decade.

Our global headquarters are in Singapore and we have been

publically trading on the London Stock Exchange since 2000.

Serving 94% of the S&P500 healthcare equipment

manufacturers, we operate from 27 locations in Europe,

North America and Asia. We have the broadest portfolio of

standard power supplies that are designed for both patient

vicinity or laboratory applications. Our engineering teams are

located in North America, Europe and Asia and employ some

of the best power supply design talent in the industry.

XP Power reduces the production andrunning costs of your equipment enabling

you to gain a competitive advantage

QualityMedical devices that are used to treat and diagnose

conditions also pose a risk to the patient especially when they

are powered from mains electricity. Such devices have very

stringent safety regulations and they are designed in such a

way so as to mitigate the risk. Medical device manufacturers

are required to abide by strict quality standards to ensure that

each product is manufactured as it was intended to be. As the

power supply typically provides the main safety isolation

barrier between hazardous mains voltages and low voltage

DC, it is essential that steps are taken to ensure any risk is as

    low as reasonably practical (ALARP).

In order to mitigate the risk associated with selecting acomponent such as a power supply, medical device

manufacturers should ensure their supplier has a quality

system that as a minimum meets the requirements of

ISO9001. XP has gone a step further and has gained

certification to ISO13485, which is a quality management

system for medical devices. By taking this extra step, XP are

ensuring that every power supply produced is as safe and fit

for purpose as can be. During the design stage all of our

products are developed under strict design controls. Below is

a list of some of the design controls that we employ:

ManufacturingOur main manufacturing location is at a facility located in

Kunshan, close to Shanghai, China. The factory provides

around 70,000 sq feet of manufacturing space and is a key

reason why XP can provide low risk power solutions to the

healthcare equipment industry. The facility which is certified to

    ISO9001, ISO14001 and ISO13485 delivers manufacturing

capabilities that are truly class leading.

ProductsOur customers are constantly trying to differentiate their

products from those of their competitors through enhanced

performance and functionality. In turn, this dynamic createsdemand for power

    converters that can satisfy a

    very wide range of technical

    requirements. Consequently,

    the XP Power research and

    development function has

    developed, and continues to

    improve, the broadest

    product portfolio of medically

    approved power supplies in

    the industry. In addition to

    this, the majority of XP

    Power products are capable

    of being modified specifically

    to the customers exactrequirements. 02

Standard power supplies do not always meet the specific requirements

of the target application. Many power systems require custom output

voltage combinations, unique control / status signals and specific

mechanical packaging for optimal performance and integration. XP

Engineering Services provides solutions where applications cannot be

fulfilled from our standard product range or where integrated products

are required. We offer the worlds strongest standard product range, which provides us with a vast selection of power platforms from which to

    deliver complex modified standards.

With local engineering design teams in key regions throughout North

America, Europe and Asia, XP is the ideal source to develop your

modified standard solution. Whatever the system power requirements,

we design and manufacture cost effective application specific solutions

that meet your electrical, mechanical, safety, EMC and thermal

management requirements, while ensuring a fast time to market.

Our power supplies and modules are manufactured in volume for many

customers providing cost effective and proven building blocks for

    modified designs.

With the recent withdrawal of the external power supplies category by

Energy Star, we are no longer permitted to use the Energy Star logo. We

have accelerated the rate of green product introductions in the last two

years and have created our own 'green power' logo to highlight these

particular products to our customers. This logo will be used for the

appropriate products on datasheets and other marketing material.

Here we highlight what we mean by green power. This definition includes

the no load power limits and average efficiency limits of our 'green power'

products for both our external power supply range and component power

    supplies.

More and more customers are asking us about efficiency and energy

consumption. In summary we are focused on developing products that

are smaller, produce less waste, consume less physical material and avoid

    hazardous substances.

Our goal is to become the leader in our industry on environmental and

    sustainability issues.

minimum efficiency of 90% at 90 VAC

input and full power. The ultra highefficiency is achieved using a half

    bridge resonant ZCS topology

    resulting in the highest power

    convection-cooled supply packaged in

    a 6" x 4" x 1.5" footprint. This high

efficiency can provide up to 70%

    waste energy savings when compared

    to conventional products, making the

CCM250 a must have product for

    energy efficiency equipment.

    Safety ApprovalsIEC60601-1:2005 (3rd Edition) Guidance

The latest version of 60601-1 is the 3rd edition which was first published in December 2005. The standard

has been adapted in the major countries/regions of the world and published as the following versions:EU: EN60601-1:2005

    USA: ANSI/AAMI ES 60601-1:2005

    Canada: CSA-C22.2 No. 60601-1:08

Currently equipment can be approved to either the 2nd or 3rd editions of the standard, but in June 2012 in

the EU the 2nd edition will be withdrawn and all equipment, both new and old, will need to be approved to

3rd edition. In the USA the withdrawal date is June 2013.

Leakage CurrentsEarth leakage Current flowing in the earth conductor.

Enclosure leakage Current flowing to earth via the patient from the enclosure.

Patient leakage Current flowing to earth via the patient from an applied part.

    Major Impact of 3rd Edition

    General requirements for design process

to include risk management process in

accordance with ISO14971. Safety has been broadened from basic

    safety to include essential performance.

    Collateral standards IEC60601-1-1 and

    IEC60601-1-14 have been inserted into

clause 14 and clause 16 of 3rd edition.

    Distinction now made between operator

and patient with introduction of MOOP

(Means of Operator Protection) and MOP

    (Means Of Patient Protection). Broadly

    MOOP follows IEC60950 and MOPP

follows 60601-1 2nd edition. In either

case 2 x MOP (Mean Of Protection) must

    be present under normal conditions.

XP Power Plan for 3rd Edition Approval

All current medical grade power supplies

approved to 2nd edition will be re-

approved to 3rd edition by June 2012

    (consult sales for detailed plan).

All medical grade power supplies will

comply with MOPP (Means Of Patient

    Protection).

To address Risk Management XP has

implemented Risk Management as part o

the design process in accordance with

    ISO14971 and factory QMS upgraded

    to ISO13485.
