Phuket is the biggest island at 550sq km, the same size as Singapore, located in west coast of Southern Thailand in the Andaman Sea. Phuket is a mountainous covered by forest. The lowlands are comprised of rubber plantations, pineapples and coconuts.

Thanyapura Mind Centre (TMC) offers training in the cultivation of cognitive and emotional balance. TMC provides a blend of contemporary psychology and neuroscience alongside ancient Asian contemplative practices.

The proposed Thailand study abroad will provide PsyD and Ma students an immersive experience in Mindful Awareness, yoga and meditation in the context of a retreat designed to learn skills to work with patients in a clinical setting, as well as in the context of work/life balance and self care. Students will come away from the study abroad with a certificate from Thanyapura Mind Centre Certificate in Yoga and Mindfulness Training for Psychologists

Students will arrange their own airfare from LA to Phuket. Suggestions for airport transfers will be discussed 1st class

Amanpuri Resort Villa with chef, and house staffPersonal time will be built into itinerarySpecifics- no spouses, must be in good physical condition, yoga and

body work 1-2x per day.We will take shuttle each morning to Thanyapuri Mind Center for

Lecture/yoga. Lunch back at Villa, afternoon theory and practice session or cultural

To present an intellectual overview of: Mindfulness meditation Insight practice The varieties of practice in different Eastern traditions, (Tibetan, Burmese, Thai, Zen) Review how these traditions have shifted in meeting Western studentsTo explore the application of mindfulness to the profession of psychology in a clinical settingTo guide & engage participants in their own immersive, personal, experiential practice of mindfulness and insight meditation with a two-fold focus:Benefit to self in maintaining work/life balanceTo benefit the client/patient – those with and with-out prior experienceTo present an opportunity to engage in mindful yoga practicesTo deepen the grounded awareness of the body, feelings and breath

To support the development of focused awareness or Mindfulness in movement

Students will identify basic concepts and issues in the theoretical foundations of Mindfulness and its practice

Students will demonstrate capacity for critical thinking with respects to concepts and issues underlying professional practice;

Students will identify historic origins and paths of development within the current field of psychology/psychotherapy/marriage and family therapy in their diversity across cultures

Students will demonstrate capacity to integrate historical and cross-cultural data into an understanding of professional roles, activities, and contexts.

An overview of contemplative psychology and practice and its application in the therapeutic setting; eudemonia.

Learning to listen to the experience of body rather than placing demands or expectations on it; using body as a tool for awareness and healing; learning to read posture as an aid to diagnosis and treatment planning

Relaxation as a foundation for attention; tuning into feelings using the breath; using breath as a tool for awareness and healing; how to read and address clients needs through observing breathing patterns.
