Welcome to Truck Power. With many of the major Australian banks recently offering fixed mortgage rates at record lows, many in the mortgage belt will be pondering the question: to fix or not to fix? With variable rates also at record lows, it’s a difficult decision to make.

Of course there are also attractive finance deals to be had in other areas of lending, with economic pundits suggesting that the stable rates might continue for some time yet. While it’s not good news for cash investors, it does present a tantalising prospect for those looking to invest in their business, whether it is in infrastructure or capital equipment such as their truck fleet. Quite simply there’s never been a better time to see your bank manager.

While this is good in theory, one can’t underestimate the role that the ‘C’ word (confidence) plays in the business environment. Evidence of this can be seen in the recent truck sales data, July year-to-date figures show that the total market was 4 per cent lower. Isuzu sales bucked the trend somewhat, rising three per cent compared to this time last year. This performance is in keeping with research that suggests that during uncertain market conditions, consumers are more likely to select brands with a time-proven good reputation.

In this edition of Truck Power we provide you with all the latest news from IAL and the Isuzu Dealer Network including details of the new Isuzu Trucks website, designed to provide buyers with additional information and functionality.

The IAL World pages discuss recent upgrades and investments by Isuzu Dealerships around the country, designed to enhance the level of service, support and parts available to our customers. On the subject of parts, those looking for some excellent deals should have a look at the latest ‘Real Deals’ catalogue – if you don’t have one handy it can be viewed on the website, or alternatively, we provide you with a summary of what’s on offer on the Parts and Service page.

In Tech Torque we take a look at tyre maintenance. As all readers would know, tyres aren’t cheap so we look at some tips for increasing tyre longevity and improving safety on the road.

We also provide all the latest information from the regular Isuzu departments.

As well, we bring you a varied selection of customer stories from just about all corners of the country, from the slightly unusual Victorian Hydrant Testing & Plumbing’s very specialised N Series, to more traditional food distribution work (albeit gourmet) undertaken by Perth’s ‘Blue Cow Cheese Company’.

Horseracing aficionados will enjoy our story covering Thoroughbred Racing Productions; the company is responsible for broadcasting seamless clear transmissions from many Victorian racing meets, using a fleet of very well specified Isuzu broadcast trucks to do this.

We also catch up with Graham’s Concrete and gain some insight into its latest vehicle, a FYJ 2000 concrete agitator. Completing our features is a story covering Ergon Energy’s use of a broad range of Isuzu’s to keep their infrastructure working at its best in Queensland.

We also announce the winner of our recent tablet giveaway competition. Hope you enjoy the magazine.

JOHN DONNELLY WINS ‘TABLET GIVEAWAY’!

NEWS

Last edition, we gave readers the chance to win a tablet of their choice by opting to receive an electronic copy of Truck Power rather than have it posted in hard copy.

Congratulations to the lucky winner, John Donnelly, Managing Director of Wrightway Products in New South Wales, who has won a tablet of his choice.

“Here at Wrightway Products we are quite green. We run our entire factory on solar and do not like to receive any publications in paper form,” Mr Donnelly said.

“Our core business is the fabrication of stainless steel Lid Lifta’s® – foot pedals to open the lids of wheely bins – and the manufacture of our own designed Wrightway2MT® bin emptying machine, for emptying wheelie bins into industrial skips and lifting ingredients into mixers.”

Wrightway Products uses an Isuzu NQR 450 for general pick up of supplies, transportation of their manufactured products to and from

the Brisbane-based galvanizer and delivery of completed products.

“The NQR is far from being a fashion accessory. It is used for hard, dirty work and is tested to the limit as a fully functional working asset to our business,” Mr Donnelly said.

“We mostly do one or two return trips per week from Lismore to Brisbane. The NQR has been used to deliver multiple machines as far as Canberra from our Lismore factory, and has done many deliveries to regional and rural locations as far north as Townsville, north-west to Emerald and south to Narrabri. All without a hitch from the truck. We have had a great run from our Isuzu on long and short trips.”

The competition may be over, but you are still able to switch to receiving Truck Power electronically in a .pdf file. To do so, simply email [email protected] with ‘Electronic Truck Power’ in the subject line. Please include your full name and address in the email, along with your preferred email address in which to receive Truck Power.

The meetings were designed to garner customer input about Isuzu truck specifications with a view to evaluating and possibly applying some of the suggestions into the development of new Isuzu trucks.

IAL Chief Engineer, Product Strategy, Simon Humphries said that the company typically consulted with customers in programs such as this every three to four years.

“While IAL undertakes its own extensive product development program including thousands of

hours of real-world testing, this could never replace the day-to-day use that our customers experience when using their trucks,” Mr Humphries said.

“Following these face to face interviews, we now want to ask a broader cross-section of our loyal customers the same questions. I’m pleased to say that customer suggestions from previous surveys have resulted in some of the new features and engineering of several current models. The initiative is a win-win situation for all concerned.”

Give us your feedback for a chance to win a tablet computer of your choice valued up to $1,000.

If you’re the owner of a recent model Isuzu truck, we want to hear from you!

Please take the time to complete our fifteen minute online survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/IsuzuTrucks2014. All surveys successfully completed by Friday 3 October will go into the draw to win an iPad, Android or Windows tablet of your choice valued up to $1,000. For full terms and conditions please visit: www.isuzu.com.au/competition.aspx.

The lucky winner, John Donnelly, with Wrightway Products’ Isuzu NQR 450.

The IAL engineering team has completed face to face information sessions with over 20 large fleets from around Australia, across a broad range of industries, to gain valuable feedback for future model development.

NEWS

NEW ISUZU WEBSITE OFFERS ADDED FEATURES AND FUNCTIONALITYIAL has recently launched an exciting new website designed to give customers a more functional and easy-to-use experience whether accessing the site from a desktop computer, mobile phone or tablet.

Aside from the benefits of a new responsive design, the site also boasts a cleaner layout enabling faster navigation and quick access to information for Isuzu Trucks, Parts and Industrial Engines.

A ground-breaking feature of the site is a new truck comparison function – not only does it allow the viewer to compare a variety of Isuzu models, it also allows comparisons between Isuzu trucks and competitor models. Search capabilities have also been enhanced and it is now possible to find a vehicle based on Series, application, vehicle purpose and weight category.

The new website also helps facilitate fast quote responses from the Isuzu Dealer Network, as the user can submit a detailed query including body type and the payload that they are interested in. This function ensures that truck buyers can be promptly contacted and provided with the most relevant information.

Capping off the major improvements is a heightened ‘find a dealer’ function allowing users greater search variables including search by postcode/suburb or via a clickable map.

In commenting on the new website, IAL marketing Manager, Jeff Birdseye, said that consumers were increasingly spending more time online during the truck research process.

“In the first stages of product research, many prospects are accessing the internet to acquaint and familiarise themselves with the truck models they’re interested in,” Mr Birdseye said.

“Along with product media test drives and reviews, a manufacturer’s website is often the first port of call when seeking information, it’s with this in mind that we’re heavily focused on making the user experience on the Isuzu website as enjoyable as possible.

“All truck brands have reasonable websites in this day and age – the challenge is to provide users with an experience that is fast and user-friendly, while delivering them with all the information they require to progress their purchase process, in this case, a visit to their local Isuzu truck dealership.”

In event of a fire it’s critical that all equipment is in full working order – the only way to do this is with regular testing.

Ensuring their fire hydrants, hose reels and sprinkler systems are operating safely is not only a legal requirement for businesses, but a critical safety measure

in enabling fire services to operate quickly and effectively in the event of a fire.

Victorian Hydrant Testing & Plumbing Pty Ltd (VHTP) Director Andrew Hor had ten years’ experience in the fire protection industry before starting VHTP in 2004, and is proud to now be one of the state’s most respected providers of fire hydrant testing, repairs, maintenance and certification.

“We have tested thousands of systems on behalf of the fire brigade, insurance companies, fire protection installers, and national fire protection

providers, and we find faults in system design and installation almost every week. Insurance is void if maintenance and testing is not upheld and it can lead to fines and building closures for severe cases,” Andrew said.

In 2009, to ensure VHTP had the capacity and sufficient resources to test large industrial sites and some of the city’s tallest buildings, Andrew added two Isuzu NNR 200s to his small fleet of cars.

“We wanted something we could drive on a car licence, something that was small enough to get into the laneways of Melbourne, but it had to be able to handle up to a two tonne load given the weight of the pumps we carry,” Andrew said.

“We need our trucks to simulate what the fire

brigade would do in the event of a fire. The fire brigade trucks can pump up to 65 storeys and this truck will pump up to 100 storeys. The Isuzus have got bucketloads of power and the economy is good. We haven’t had a problem with them.”

As well as testing fire equipment and systems in buildings, apartments, petrochemical sites, schools, shopping centres, and nursing homes, Andrew and his team at VHTP have tested a number of Melbourne’s most iconic sites since purchasing the Isuzu trucks including: Flinders Street Station, the MCG, the Metro Tunnel system, Rialto, and Etihad Stadium.

To equip the NNR 200s for their role, the bodies were custom-built to VHTP specifications, and

each fitted with a fire pump, hydrostatic pumps, required hydrant fittings, adaptors, flow test equipment, pressure gauges and hand tools.

“One truck is for large capacity flow tests for large industrial sites and the other is specifically designed for high rise installations. Its high rise pump can output 1,500 litres a minute at a pressure of 5,500 kPa. For comparison the city mains water pressure is around 600 kPa,” Andrew said.

Fire hydrant testing is required annually under essential series maintenance requirements with a full commissioning test required every five years to ensure systems are still capable of delivering optimum performance.

“We do a flow test at the most disadvantaged hydrants – which is either the highest hydrant on a multi-storey building or the furthest hydrant from the water main supply or onsite pump – to measure the city mains pressure and flow capability. We test onsite fire pumps and measure their performance if installed as well.

“We also flow test booster connections which is the water supply device the fire brigade connects to when attending building fires. We perform a two-hour hydrostatic test to check that the pipe work can handle sudden pressure increases and its overall condition.”

As well as requiring unwavering reliability and performance in his new company vehicles,

presentation was a vital factor in Andrew’s choice to purchase Isuzu and stand out from his competitors.

“I like the professional look of the Isuzu trucks. I think it sends the right message to clients and potential customers – to do the best job you need the best tools and it separates our company from the backyarders of the industry,” he said.

“We’ve had several customers engage our services because they’re so impressed by the appearance of the truck and our equipment. The Isuzu trucks have set us apart from our competitors and have been our best advertising tool to date.”

FEATURE

Every year on the first Tuesday of November, the nation stops for a race that brings together the world’s finest thoroughbred horses in a heart-stopping

3,200 metre race – the revered Melbourne Cup.

Bringing the action to your screens rain, hail or shine is Thoroughbred Racing Productions (TRP) – an industry-owned television production company that delivers live coverage of some 550 Victorian racing meets each year.

Getting the team of TV directors, camera operators, broadcast engineers, technicians and audio operators to the track each day is a six-strong Isuzu fleet fitted out with cutting edge high-definition broadcast equipment.

The company formed in 2008 to take on Racing Victoria’s broadcast requirements, and the first job on the list for Engineering & Technical Operations Manager Charles Cole was getting the company’s N and F series trucks work-ready.

“The trucks were purpose-built by Rambler Concept Vehicles and fitted out with our broadcast equipment by Sony. The way we’ve set it up is that we have three broadcast trucks and essentially three support trucks. The FVL 1400 is our main broadcast truck for metropolitan meetings and it’s basically a fully functioning TV control room. To replace it in today’s terms you’d be looking at around $5 million dollars,” Charles said.

“Accompanying the FVL is our main grip truck, the FSD 850, and that carries all of the extras ─ cameras, cables, and tripods. The smaller trucks, two NQR 450s and two FSR 700s, are used for the country race meets and already they’ve clocked up about 300,000 kilometres each.”

At a major metropolitan meeting, TRP will have 25 staff on site to carry out the broadcast requirements for the day which includes delivering live coverage from 18 cameras around the track. As well as running a tracking vehicle, TRP has microwave link cameras at the barrier, low angle replay cameras and a number of cameras positioned for the race stewards’ judiciary requirements. The team also delivers race replays, betting odds, virtual graphics and extreme slow motion cameras –delivering the same techniques as all major mainstream broadcasters.

To ensure TRP provides quality, reliable broadcasts day in and day out, Charles runs a foolproof maintenance schedule for vehicles and equipment.

“We’re out on the track 363 days a year, and in one year alone we’re delivering around 2,000 hours of live television. With those sorts of volumes, what we do has to be repeatable, and the set up needs to be as smooth as possible,” Charles said.

“First and foremost to making sure we get the job done without any continuity issues, is the maintenance of the vehicles. We keep a very strict regime on the maintenance and that basically nips a lot of things in the bud straight away. We run a pretty tight ship, with strict rules around rostering and who’s allowed to drive the trucks as well.”

Six years on from purchase and Charles believes the Isuzu trucks have proven their worth in terms of reliability and performance.

“The proof is in the pudding, we’ve been operating now for almost six years and we haven’t had any major issues with any of the

trucks. Our smaller trucks have clocked up a fair few kilometres and they’re still going strong,” Charles said.

“Isuzus were the smart choice for us from the outset. I’ve been in the industry for close to 40 years and I’ve always had Isuzu vehicles in the different companies I’ve worked for. They’ve always proved to be reliable and that’s exactly what we needed.”

To maintain their record for near-infallible service delivery, Charles and his team will conduct a vehicle assessment on each of the trucks once they reach the 500,000 kilometre mark.

“It will probably be around the seven-eight year mark when we will need to take a look at all of our equipment, including the vehicles. What we may end up doing is replacing the cab chassis, transferring the bodies and that should see us right for another 500,000 kilometres!”

While Charles has worked across a number of Australia’s favourite sports and for some of the country’s major television networks, keeping his Isuzu trucks on form and the high-tech broadcast facilities operating at 100 per cent performance has proven to be one of his most satisfying roles of his career.

“In this job, it helps if you have a passion for horses of course, but I think the part of my job I enjoy the most is delivery of the vehicles on a day-to-day basis in a seamless fashion. It’s satisfying to be able to work with the TRP team to find out where our soft spots are – sometimes its infrastructure on the track and sometimes it’s areas within the truck facilities that need looking at and refining,” Charles said.

ith around 160,000 kilometres of power lines and one million power poles to maintain, Queensland electricity distributor, Ergon Energy,

has an enormous job ensuring a constant power supply throughout the state, Australia’s second largest in terms of area.

But that’s not all. Ergon Energy manages associated infrastructure, such as major substations and power transformers, and also provides electricity generation services to Torres Strait Islands.

Ergon Energy services a wide variety of customers, including domestic, commercial, industrial and mining.

To assist Ergon Energy in its electricity distribution, the company operates a fleet of 490 trucks, more than 360 of which are Isuzus.

Fleet Acquisition Manager, Mario Zappulla, has been with the company and its predecessor since 1988 and says Isuzu trucks have been widely used

throughout this time.

“We use a variety of Isuzu models, including the NPR 300, NPS 300, NQR 450, FSS 550, FSR 600 and FVZ 1400,” Mr Zappulla said.

The Isuzu trucks are fitted with a wide range of bodies, including flat beds, mobile elevating platforms, mobile crane borers, and service bodies fitted with accessories such as winches, storage boxes and ladder racks.

“The trucks have a variety of roles supporting the underground and overhead power line distribution network,” Mr Zappulla said.

“While keeping the trucks as standard as possible, we work with Isuzu Australia Limited and Brisbane Isuzu to have Ergon Energy-specific accessories fitted, such as digital wiring harnesses.”

Due to the vast area covered, around 1.7 million square kilometres, Ergon Energy’s fleet of Isuzu trucks is required to operate over a wide range of regional and rural conditions.

“The terrain our trucks travel on can range on a daily basis from bitumen and formed dirt roads to remote access tracks little better than a goat track,” Mr Zappulla said.

Mr Zappulla said Ergon Energy uses Isuzu due to the comprehensive model range, Gross Vehicle Mass ratings and wheelbases offered.

“When selecting models to suit individual roles, we first conduct a careful review of the operating conditions, payload required and any specialist operation needs. Where possible, we attempt to standardise the configuration selected for trucks with similar roles,” he said.

“With the new common-rail style engines, I believe our Isuzus have ample power to undertake the duties required. I also believe the Isuzu trucks are very easy and comfortable to drive and operate.

“The Isuzu brand has served Ergon Energy well over the years and has established itself with a firm reputation in terms of safety, features,

value for money, high resale and excellent manufacturer support.

“When we evaluate trucks during our fleet procurement, we pay attention to aspects such as safety and environmental concerns, technical compliance, manufacturer and dealer support, and price.

“From our experience, the support Isuzu Australia Limited and the dealership provide us throughout Queensland also ranks highly. Isuzu’s customer service is excellent and its ability to respond quickly to requests for assistance and support has always been one of its great strengths.”

A government owned corporation, Ergon Energy was formed in 1999 from the amalgamation of six regional Queensland electricity distributors and a retailer. Today, Ergon Energy employs approximately 4,600 staff and has offices and depots throughout the state.

Where’s the cheese? It’s in the back of a Blue Cow Cheese Company Isuzu on the way to your favourite deli.

ISUZU A CRACKER FOR BLUE COW CHEESE COMPANY

FEATURE

These days any trip down the supermarket aisle or to the gourmet delicatessen sees cheese lovers spoilt for choice with a mouthwatering selection from both

Australia and around the globe.

Perth-based Blue Cow Cheese Company is adding to the selection by bringing a taste of Europe to Australia with its range of artisan and farmhouse cheeses.

The business imports and distributes the best cheeses from both European and local producers, along with charcuterie and other gourmet products including pastry, ice cream, pate, dips, olives and savoury biscuits.

Based in Belmont, Blue Cow Cheese Company supplies products to the food service and retail sector in Western Australia and is expanding into the other states. Perth’s metropolitan daily distribution is handled by a fleet of Isuzu NLR 200 trucks, easily identifiable via blue livery featuring a cow jumping over the moon.

Prior to distributing the products via road, those that are imported from Europe arrive in two ways. The fresh, delicate and young cheeses are air-freighted fortnightly from France and Italy, while the hard cheeses and other gourmet products are

shipped directly from Italy to Fremantle Port.

According to Blue Cow Cheese Company Managing Director, Nicholas Bath, as the business has grown from one person to a team of 30 people over the past 16 years, its systems have also become more sophisticated.

“Not only do we supply chilled product, we also have the capability to supply frozen and dry product, all delivered in one vehicle,” Mr Bath said.

“We have standardised our fleet on the very reliable Isuzu NLR 200 – with one manual and three AMTs in the lineup. Our latest Isuzu is a new medium wheel based truck. The beauty of the NLR is that it can be driven on a car licence.

“Our trucks are on the road from Monday through to Friday and are used for metropolitan delivery to the likes of supermarkets and via inner city laneways to hotels and cafes.”

In addition to importing the international products, Blue Cow Cheese Company has its own range of products which are locally sourced.

“We work with a small group of producers who are able to produce cheese to our brand’s specifications. These producers are experts in their respective fields and are located in all

different regions of Australia,” Mr Bath said.

With such a broad food offering and customers located all across Australia, it’s important that Blue Cow Cheese Company’s fleet of trucks stay on the move with little downtime.

“The business commenced using another Japanese brand before moving to a European manufacturer before settling on Isuzu. The reason being the high quality of the Isuzu product, as well as our strong relationship with Major Motors and Sales Manager, Peter Dewar,” Mr Bath said.

“The trucks travel up to 500 kilometres per week. They have performed very well and take the punishment of inner city distribution well. The bodies are strong, the cabs make a very pleasant working environment and the engine performance is faultless.

“The vehicles perform very well and provide us with enough power for the work we do. All of our drivers comment on the layout, functionality and spaciousness of the truck cabs.

“While I keep an eye on truck market trends and the new products that are available, it’s difficult to go past Isuzu and Major Motors. As we grow, we will always have Isuzu at the top of our list for selection.”

Three generations of the Graham family welcome their newest member – an Isuzu FYJ 2000 8x4 concrete mixer.

For three generations, Graham family members have enjoyed driving their Isuzus around northern NSW and southern Queensland.

But no truck has created such excitement at Graham’s Concrete in Kyogle, NSW, as their latest addition to the fleet, an FYJ 2000 medium auto.

Rightly so, with the eight-wheeler boasting a GVM of 30,000 kg and delivering 257 kw at 2,000 rpm, as well as 1,422 Nm at 1,200-1,500 rpm.

Then, there is the comfort factor.

The ride is helped along with a load-sharing front suspension equaliser with shock absorber, while boasting an Isri 6860 air suspension driver’s seat with pneumatic lumbar support, height, rake and automatic weight adjustment.

The Graham’s Concrete FYJ 2000 has now been

decked out in the business’s familiar red-and-white livery, much to the delight of the owners.

Present co-owner, Peter Graham, said the Isuzu range just keeps on improving.

“They’re a strong, tough and ‘go-everyday’ truck, the perfect Aussie truck really,” he said.

“This latest offering is not just great for us, but for the industry.

“We’re big truck people and we’re out there looking all the time, we reckon this is as good as anything else in the market.”

Graham’s Concrete is well-placed to judge when it comes to trucks.

The business commenced in 1967, with Harry Graham starting out delivering just concrete.

Wherever Harry went, son, John, wasn’t far behind

and often preferred working with his dad to attending school.

In 1980, Harry handed on the business to John and his wife, Chrystine, who took care of the bookkeeping.

Their son, Peter, joined in 1988, with his brother, Rodney, signing on in 1997.

The brothers have operated the business since 2004, with the operation now boasting 10 employees.

Their core services include supplying Readymix concrete around the district, as well as delivering their own products such as cattle grids, headwalls, troughs and septic systems.

Presently, the business has nine trucks in its fleet, with the plan to add another Isuzu within the next 12 months.

Graham’s Concrete has previously owned five other Isuzu trucks.

“The business is going well and we’ve got plans to expand,” Peter said.

“Isuzu trucks are a part of our success and they will be part of our future.”

Mr Graham said the latest Isuzu had proved an ideal fit, particularly for the concrete side of the business.

“I’d just like to mention, too, that it’s great to have so much horsepower for a concrete truck, particularly where we are, because there are a lot of hills,” he said.

“It saves us in time, fuel and money, which is obviously an advantage for our business.

“It’s been the perfect truck so far, there’ve been no issues.

“We’ve got a lot of time for the Japanese trucks.”

Mr Graham added the truck’s Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) emission control system was perfect for the businesses’ needs.

Unlike other emission control systems, DOC does not require Adblue or filter regeneration as used in most EGR systems.

This results in a truck with lower tare weight and a more convenient overall operation.

“The emission system is well set-up, well-designed and we think it’s a perfect match for this truck, there’s really not much you can fault,” Peter said.

“We’re happy to have this Isuzu in our fleet.”

Chrystine Graham said the business had always been a family affair.

“There’s a real family atmosphere, the wives are

involved, we’ve even got an area where we can look after the grandkids,” she said.

But it’s the newest family edition, the FYJ 2000, which takes pride of place at present.

Driver Rick Butler said he couldn’t be happier.

“It’s a nice ride, smooth and quiet on the roads, which is handy when you’re driving such long distances,” he said.

“The Isuzu runs rings around many in the market, there’s definitely nothing to whinge about.”

Mr Butler has worked with the business for the past 10 years and said he is happy to keep driving the Isuzus, which travel far and wide to places such as Tamworth, Glenn Innes, Coonabarabran, southern Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

INDUSTRY WORLD

WINTER AND TAYLOR ISUZU – GEELONG’S NEW ONE-STOP TRUCK STOP

Located on an old Bunnings site on School Road in Corio, the impressive new dealership took seven months to build and now offers customers the benefits of

sales, service and parts all under the one roof.

Approximately 150 people attended the opening and were treated to a tour of the expansive facility, live music and speeches from business, government and community representatives.

Winter and Taylor Sales Manager Graeme Ruby says the new dealership, which specialises in Isuzu trucks and D-Max utes, has been a breath of fresh air for the Geelong region.

“With three major employers closing in the region over the next year or two, it’s very positive that Winter and Taylor is experiencing steady growth and opening up a facility that is in a high profile location in the town,” Graeme said.

“The size of the new space has allowed us to integrate everything – sales, service and parts. This is already helping business efficiency both for us and our customers as we can now do all our work in the one location and we’re not spending time running vehicles around.

“The amenities are also top notch, with an internal showroom and exterior vehicle display area,

meeting room for customers and suppliers to use, shower facilities and wireless broadband available throughout the site.

“Our service area is a large drive-through facility, which can accommodate B-double trucks, it also has a full-length pit and portable four-post hoist,” Graeme said.

Founded by Harry Winter and Harry Taylor, Winter and Taylor first opened its doors in 1908 as an

engineering business building stationary motors for machinery. The company became a car and truck franchise in the early 1920s and first began trading in Isuzu trucks in early 1973.

With a proud history of providing exceptional service delivery and quality vehicles and workmanship to customers, Winter and Taylor has forged an important stronghold in the local automotive and commercial vehicle industry and remains a valuable part of the Isuzu dealership network.

The recent grand opening of Winter and Taylor’s outstanding new Geelong dealership has brought good news for Geelong-ites and Isuzu truck customers.

INVESTMENT IN ISUZU CONTINUES WITH NEW LISMORE TRUCK DEALERSHIP

RAISING THE BAR IN SUNRAYSIA WITH NEW PARTS FACILITY

Part of the Frizelle automotive group, Northern Rivers Isuzu boasts outstanding new facilities to better promote the sales, parts and service support to the region’s Isuzu truck customers.

The site offers dedicated sales offices and a showroom used to showcase Isuzu parts, oils and lubricants, accessories and other miscellaneous items, providing a very comfortable environment for both Dealership staff and customers.

According to Northern Rivers Isuzu Sales Manager, David Hill, the new facility will go far to meeting the trucking needs of the region.

“The truck dealership previously shared an area with five new car franchises and a large number of used cars that kept us a little hidden from truck buyers,” Mr Hill said.

“We now have a lot more space, improved customer access and parking areas, not to mention enhanced display areas, sales offices and service and parts departments.

“Given the increasing number of Isuzu truck owners in the Northern Rivers region, the new site has been a very worthwhile investment to better serve their needs – we’re getting very positive comments from our customers.”

Conveniently located at the corner of Cook Street and Bruxner Highway Lismore, the new facility provides easy highway access and employs 12 permanent staff including two new technicians that started with the Dealership’s opening in June.

The new facility rates among the best in regional Australia and even rivals some of the parts premises offered by metropolitan dealerships. As a mid-way point on the major truck route between Sydney and Adelaide, the recent expansion of the parts

department is a major step forward in providing customers with fast and efficient service.

Mildura Truck Centre Parts Manager and Director, Rod Leake said the latest expansion of the parts facility was a key factor in providing customers with a premium after-sales service.

“Downtime is a really big cost for operators. If a truck cannot run because it needs a part that is not readily available, it can cost owners significant time and money. So it’s really important that we’re able to forecast parts demand and have enough items on the shelves to get our customers back on the road as quickly as possible,” Rod said.

“The facility has improved the level of service to our customers because we’re able to carry more stock and have a larger range of serviceable items on hand to accommodate repairs.”

The new Parts Warehouse and Showroom houses over 13,000 line items, equating to around $1.2m worth of stock and employs 11 staff members who have streamlined the parts process, from generating daily stock orders, to delivering parts direct to the customer’s door.

The Northern Rivers Region of New South Wales is set to benefit from the recent opening of a stunning new Isuzu Trucks Dealership in Lismore.

Mildura Truck Centre has recently opened an impressive new spare parts facility and showroom, designed to provide Isuzu customers with greater access to a wider variety of parts and accessories ‘off-the-shelf’.

TECH TORQUE

Aquaplaning is a danger that may be encountered when driving with bald tyres in the wet. It is the result of the tyre grooves not being deep enough to channel water out.

Driving with bald tyres also increases the risk of tyre failure (blow-out). It can be catastrophic if this happens while driving, causing you to lose control of your vehicle or being stranded in the middle of nowhere. The potential downtime can also be costly for your business.

Tyres are a roadworthy item and authorities will issue the vehicle with a defective notice if its tyres are bald.

Underinflated tyres will not maintain their shape and have an increase in friction which is bad for overall efficiency and increases fuel consumption. It will also reduce the tyre life and affect steering precision and cornering stability. Underinflated tyres on a dual wheel application could rub together and result in a dangerous tyre blow-out.

Overinflated tyres are extremely rigid and road contact is reduced. This will affect braking efficiency, so you could skid along the road. Overinflated tyres are also very dangerous in wet conditions, as steering and braking efficiency could be affected. They also ride a lot harsher, as they are harder than they should be and cannot isolate road irregularities.

When the tyres are cold, check the pressure at least once a week with a pressure gauge. This can be done at a service station or your local Isuzu dealer. Some service station air compressors may be too small and won’t reach the required pressures for heavy vehicles.

Our new model range now has an option for a tyre pressure monitoring system to assist with these checks and all pressures will be displayed on the multimedia unit screen.

Don’t forget to check the air pressure in the spare tyre!

To find the correct tyre pressure for your vehicle you will need to match the tyres you have on the vehicle to the specifications in the owner’s manual or tyre placard in the cab. It’s critical you match the tyre size to the pressures required, as every tyre size runs at a different pressure.

Worn suspension parts, vehicle wheel alignment being out of specifications or tyres being out of shape or balance are some other factors that could contribute to premature tyre wear.

If you are noticing premature tyre wear please call your local Isuzu dealer and have the issue attended to before it’s too late and costly.

To prolong the life of your tyres it’s recommended to carry out all checks and keep an eye on tyre pressure.

Try to avoid mounting gutters and any road defects. It’s also important to avoid turning your vehicle while stationary, as flat spots may occur on your steer tyres.

It’s also recommended to rotate tyres when getting your vehicle serviced, as they may wear differently at different locations on the vehicle.

Some tyres are regrooveable and by doing so you could restore up to 4mm of tread depth, which could be a quarter of the tyres original depth.

Regrooving should be carried out by a trained operator when the tyres are slightly worn to match the tyre manufacturer’s specifications.

Check your tyres visually every day for any abnormal wear, damage, cracks, nails or foreign material embedded into the tyre. Ensure no pebbles are lodged between the dual tyres on the rear of the vehicle.

It’s very important to check the tyres’ side walls thoroughly for cracks and damage.

Check the rotational direction on your tyre shown by an arrow. If the tyre is installed incorrectly it will make noise and could affect the tyre grip.

It’s recommended to choose a well-known tyre manufacturer like Michelin as they use a high quality rubber compound and computerised tyre construction design. A high quality compound will provide better durability and higher levels of grip. A good brand will also assist with road noise and comfort.

While using a leading tyre brand may initially cost a little extra, using a cheaper compound may wear a lot quicker and affect your vehicle’s safety.

TRUCK OF THE YEAR

COWRA FREIGHT - FXL 1500NSW haulage company, Cowra Freight, recently added a new Isuzu FXL 1500 to its fleet.

The new truck joins two other Isuzus purchased from Wagga Motors over the years, including an FVD 1000 featuring a pusher lazy front axle and plenty of ‘bling’ that saw it win the 2005 Truck of the Year competition.

Servicing Sydney and the Central West, Cowra Freight has the staff and fleet to transport anything from a small parcel to full load, including bulk dangerous goods.

The FXL 1500 features a curtainsider body with internal camlocks on the rear barn doors.

ENZED MILDURA - NPS 300 4X4Enzed Mildura provides a complete service for hydraulic and pneumatic machinery hose and connector repairs.

The Victorian business recently purchased a new Isuzu NPS 300 4x4 from Mildura Truck Centre to meet their requirement for a four wheel drive truck to enter mine sites and access blocks and paddocks for their mobile hose repair service.

“The truck has been great and the four wheel drive has been very handy in a few situations,” Jason Waters said.

“We also use the truck to tow our V8 race car trailer, which it handles with ease.”

The NPS 300 4x4 has been fitted with a service body, with a paint job matching the Enzed MIldura red, black and gold branding.

M & N PLANT MECHANIC - NPR 200 & NPR 300 M & N Plant Mechanic is a small mechanical business based in NSW with three field Isuzu service trucks in its fleet – two NPR 200s and one NPR 300.

According to Matthew Cefai, the business repairs most equipment, but specialises in asphalt equipment.

“The Isuzus are fully decked out for field service. The oldest in the fleet is a 2006 NPR 200 which I purchased new. It now has 187,000 kilometres on the clock and never misses a beat. This is what has led me to purchasing more Isuzu trucks,” he said.

“Previously I had a 1999 NPR 200 which was a great truck. Unfortunately it was involved in an accident so I then had to purchase another truck – a 2013 NPR 200 Short. I purchased my third Isuzu truck when business got busy, an NPR 300 Medium with a fully custom field service body.

“Isuzu trucks are comfortable and reliable. Being a small business I can’t afford downtime. Turn the key and away you go to keep my customers going.”

JOHN DUNN - NPS 300 4X4NSW Central Coast resident, John Dunn, built his motorhome over two years starting with an Isuzu NPS 300 4x4 cab chassis. The whole vehicle was designed for ease of proportion and the ability to go anywhere.

The motorhome features a steel frame, insulated aluminium skin, roof solar panels and sophisticated electronics. It has panoramic windows along one side, leather dinette seats, 90 litre refrigerator, 90 litre freezer, gas cooktop, electric oven and microwave. The queen-size bed converts into a sofa at the touch of a button, and a flat-screen TV emerges from the back of the dinette seat. Overhead lockers have been fitted for storage. A bathroom across the rear of the vehicle contains a shower, toilet and heated towel rails.

The vehicle is able to carry 220 litres of fresh water and 130 litres of grey water, and has two toilet cassettes.

Further personalising the motorhome, a mural across the rear was printed from a photo John took while crossing the Nullarbor.

Since completing the motorhome in 2012, John has driven his NPR 300 4x4 to the tip of Cape York, 7,000 kilometres around Tasmania, and will set off for the Kimberly region in July this year, through western Queensland and the Tanami Desert.

KEITH AND LORRAINE FELTON - NPR 200 PREMIUM TRADEPACKQueensland couple, Keith and Lorraine Felton, has been travelling Australia in their Isuzu NPR 200 Premium Tradepack.

Residing in Hervey Bay, the pair have fitted their NPR 200 with an electric winch to load their boat, as well as boxes to house their generator and compressor in case they get a flat tyre; two freezers and a fridge are also on board.

Water supply is handled via three underbody water tanks holding 500 litres, an additional two are housed under the caravan providing an extra 160 litres of fresh water.

“We tow a 25ft Jayco slide out caravan and we just love the comfort and room we now have,” they said.

“It was the best move we made purchasing one of these vehicles. It is much better than any four wheel drive. We still travel anywhere and go off road quite a bit. The only thing we can’t do is go on the beach.”

PETER LLOYD - FVD 1000 LONGStar Track contractor, Peter Lloyd, recently purchased two Isuzu FVD 1000 Longs to complete overnight deliveries in regional Western Australia.

Based in Perth, Peter has been an Isuzu operator for over 30 years, with some of his trucks clocking one million kilometres over their delivery journeys.

The FVD 1000 Longs are fitted with blue curtainsider bodies.
