SUNHARY

This manual describes the preparation and use of computer programs

used in the report on the yield reappraisal of Donkey Camp Pool

(Report 27/1990).

In addition to analysis of the existing pool, programs have been

produced for analysis involving extra storage capacity by the

incorporation of pools upstream of Donkey Camp as >vell as the

effects on the Donkey Camp Pool of a weir at the outlet of the pool.

The manual outlines the storage drawdown relationships used for each 1 .

Description is given on how to obtain input files, how to run the

program and the form of output produced.

Detailed examples are given in the Appendix .

2. PREVIOUS ANALYSIS

Previous analysis of Donkey Camp Pool yield has been carried out

with a report produced by Marlow in 1983.

3. INFLOW-OUTFLOW RELATIONSHIP

The present analysis uses a relationship between gauged flow in

Seventeen Mile Creek and the Katherine River at the Gorge against

outflow from Donkey Camp Pool during the dry season (June to

December). Recession flows occurring during the dry season normally

cause flow to cease at the Katherine Gorge early in the dry with the

majority of water coming from Seventeen Hile Creek, which is a

perennial stream.

4. WATER BALANCE MODELS

Various water balance models have been produced for this analysis.

They all operate on a daily time step and establish the volume and

drawdown level of the pool at the end of each day.

The volume is calculated by the following relationship:

Donkey camp Pool with the addition of either a 0.5, 1.0 or 1.5 metre

weir situated at the bottom end of the reservoir (Figure 2).

Model B

The Donkey Camp Pool with a 0.5, 1.0 or 1.5 metre weir located at the

outlet of the pool and incorporating the resulting additional storage

from upstream pools. The depth capacity relationship of the upstream

pools has been obtained from the 1990 survey report "Donkey Camp

water Supply Upgrading" from the Department of Lands and Housing.

5. INPUT FILES

Input files required for the water balance programs are mean daily

discharge data from both Seventeen Mile Creek (GS8140159) and

Katherine Gorge (GS8140019).

The files are obtained in the following manner:

(i) Create a summary mean daily and monthly discharge file for

each station through the corporate v~ater processing area

(ii) As the data is arranged in water years it is necessary to

then cut two consecutive water years data from the summary

file and paste into another file to cover any one year from

June to December. This latter file created is then edited

before it can be used in the Donksort program written by

A. Baker. Editing involves deleting all blank lines and

lines with headings, leaving only 62 lines (Figure 3).

The Donksort program can then be run with the edited file as

input. This program arranges the data in a format suitable

for input into any of the Donkey Camp model programs. Output

from the Donksort program should be named according to which

years flow it refers eg GORGE63.DAT for 1963. Figure 4

shows a typical output file from Donksort. It should be

remembered that if daily flow in any of the data is 100 m3;s

or above it will be divided by 100 due to the formatting.

Therefore if such values exist they will need to be corrected

in the Donksort output files.

6. ANALYSIS OUTPUT

Two types of output files may be produced by the programs:

{i) a summary output file and

(ii) a daily flow output file

No screen output is given for programs yielding only summary output

files.

The summary output file lists, for each pumping rate, the maximum

drawdown, the number of days from cease to flow to maximum drawdown

and the number of days drawdown exceeds 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0,

1. 2, 1. 4, 1. 6, 1. 8 and 2. 0 metres {see Appendix A). The pumping rate

increases in steps of 1. 0 l•!L/day starting at 1. 0 ML/day.

The daily flow output file lists the date, drawdown (m), and spill

(ML) for each day from June to December for a particular pump rate

(see Appendix A).

The daily flow output files are produced from interactive programs

where pumpage can be varied. The screen output gives maximum

drawdown and number of days from cease to flow to maximum drawdown so

a new estimate of pumpage can be made. Each time the pumpage is

varied another file is produced which is given the next consecutive

version number. The Vax only keeps two versions. If files are to be

kept only two pump rates should be used for each run. It is

therefore best to keep track of pumpage rates and version numbers as

only the one output file name is utilised. The interactive programs

also yield summary output files in the format noted above.

A listing of all these programs is given in Table 1 and full

examples of programs with results, are given in Appendix A .

7. 1 ANALYSIS OF DONKEY Cl'.I4P POOL INCORPORATING THE UPPER POOLS

The program DUMP.FOR allows for the dumping of water into Donkey

Camp Pool from upper pools for a set drawdown level at Donkey Camp.

Details of the program are outlined below:

The interconnection of pools 1, 2 and 3 to their bed level is

incorporated (Hodel D).

Option is given of a (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 metre) weir at Donkey

Camp Pool or no weir.

The set dra·.vdown level at Donkey Camp for the dumping of

water from upper pools can be varied.

Dumping is carried out only once during the period of

analysis.

A variable quantity of water can be dumped from pools 5, 6

and 7. The volume is determined by the user specifying the

draHdown limit below CTF of the upper pools and the height of

weir on each pool. Table 2 lists layer volumes to 2 m below

CTF for the pools.

The output specifies for each pump rate the maximum drawdown, number

of days to maximum drawdown, number of days draHdown exceeds 0.0 to

2.0 metres in steps of 0.2, the date dumping occurs and the amount of

spill. Negative spill is the volume of water required to fill Donkey

Camp Pool. The volume of water dumped from pools 5, 6 and 7 is also

stated.

These programs PUMP. FOR and PU!.fP 1. FOR establish for each pump rate

the drawdown on 1 and 15 November, the maximum drawdown and the date ..

of maximum drawdown. The case for Donkey Camp Pool only is analysed

(Hodel A1). It was written primarily to produce Figures 19 to 22 for

the Katherine Water Supply Donkey Camp Pool Yield Reappraisal report.

Input required for the program is the inflow data filename for

Seventeen ~!ile Creek and the Gorge, output filename, starting

pumpage volume and year of analysis. Pump rate is incremented in

steps of 0.1 for program PUMP.FOR and 1.0 for PUMPl.FOR.
