as(ire to Aileen's notice$ so he%s%ally sat at one of Tildy's
tables, where he devoted himself tosilence and boiled weafish!One
day when +r! Seeders came in to dinner he had beendrinin# beer!
There were only two or three c%stomers in theresta%rant! .hen +r!
Seeders had finished his weafish he #ot %(,
(%t his arm aro%nd Tildy's waist, issed her lo%dly and
im(%dently,waled o%t %(on the street, sna((ed his fin#ers in
thedirection of the la%ndry, and hied himself to (lay (ennies in
the
slot machines at the Am%sement Arcade!7or a few moments Tildy
stood (etrified! Then she was awareof Aileen shain# at her an arch

of the (otent Aileen! She herself was now a mancharmer,a mar for

banB%et boards! +an had fo%nd her waistachievable and her li(s
desirable! The s%dden and amatory Seeders2=had, as it were,

taen the saccloth of her %ncomeliness,had washed, dried, starched
and ironed it, and ret%rned it to hersheer embroidered lawn the
