What happens if yourpet develops a suddenillness or meets withan accident in the

middle of the night and needsemergency care? It dies unattend-ed, if it is in Hyderabad.

In a sad saga that highlightsthe utter lack of emergency carefor animals, a young deer, whichstrayed into the town nearSeringampally area last night con-fronted a pack of street dogs thatmauled the startled deer badly.Seeing the attack, the colony resi-dents rushed to the spot, droveaway the dogs and rescued thedeer. But profusively bleeding, thedeer was gasping for breath, said aresident of the colony.

In the confusion as to what’s tobe done, a young man volunteeredto take it to the Blue Cross clinic.

He rushed the animal to the clinic. It was nearing midnight. Hereached the Blue Cross and it wasclosed.

The security man at the gatesaid the clinic will open only at10am and its service was available

between 10am to 1pm. There wasno emergency care and no doctoravailable, he was informed.

Dejected, the man kept plead-ing with the security to inform thedoctor but he refused. He then gotin touch with the Doctor Dog clin-

ic at Jubilee Hills. The director andvet, Dr Muralidhar attended thecall and he invited the man tobring the deer but he had to get aconsent of an authorised NGO orthe forest department if surgerywas indicated because it is a wildanimal. Dr Muralidhar in turn rangup the Animal Rehabilitation andProtection Front (ARPF) to rushand help. But shortly after the managain rang up Dr Muralidhar andsaid the animal was dead.

“He sounded very sad,”recalled Dr Muralidhar. “He was

sobbing. It is heart-rending torealise that in spite of being readyto help, the precious life of an ani-mal could not be saved,” the vet-erinarian told Postnoon. “It is atro-cious that in this massive City wehave no 24x7 facility to help theanimals in need of medical atten-tion,” remarked ARPF founderNihar Parulekar who was rushingto help the deer when he wasstopped mid-way with a call thatthe animal was no more.

When contacted the BlueCross this morning, the man whoattended and identified as coordi-nator said the clinic timing was10am to 1pm. “Thereafter the doc-tors attend surgery if there is one.We have no system to attend toemergencies at midnight.”

The incident highlights thedire need of a round-the-clockemergency facility in the City toattend to the needs of pets andanimals. “The sick can’t wait forclinic timings,” remarked a petowner, Rajaram Patnakar who hadheard of the deer’s sad end.

Attacked by dogs, deer diesHyderabad sadly lacks a 24x7 emergency clinic for pets. The death last night of a deer that strayed intothe City and was subsequently attacked by dogs highlights the dire need of this facility

They zoom past traffic as ifin a race where comingfirst is everything; they tryto move ahead even in

heavy traffic without keeping aninch of space between vehicles;they wear a ‘we-don’t-care atti-tude’ on the sleeve, and are out toreduce the population!

Meet Andhra Pradesh StateRoad Transport Corporation(APSRTC) buses. They are big, they are fast, and they are brutal! The number of accidents in 2011,up to November, was a staggering

207. And this is just in the GreaterHyderabad Zone. The State fig-ures are alarming.

The accident rate of 2010 was0.09 and this increased to 0.102 in2011. On May 28, Ramkumar, 28,a civil engineer in a private firm, was hit by a speeding bus inSaifabad and died on the spot.Every now and then, there aresimilar reports of the negligenceby APSRTC bus drivers.

The passengers who use thebuses don’t feel safe either. However, since it is the cheapestmode of travel, they have littlechoice. “The bus drivers some-times drive like maniacs. Theynot only risk their lives, but alsothe lives of hundreds of others, especially the passengers. Theyhave no regards for rules andsomehow the traffic policemendon’t tell them anything either. This makes them feel as if theyare above the rules. It is pathetic,”opined Amina Razvi, a home-

maker residing in Punjagutta.Recalling an incident, Amina

said, “I was driving in BegumBazaar last month, and when thesignal turned green, I went aheadwhen out of no where, anAPSRTC bus banged into my car.The bonnet got damaged. Thishappened despite a police copbeing present at the signal. Thedriver did not care to apologiseand instead shouted at me.”

As if driving fast and rashwasn’t bad enough, the busdrivers have a cold attitude

towards the passengers. “Theyare insensitive. Neither do theystop properly at bus stops, nor dothey drive safely. The bus is dan-gerous when it is crowded orwhen there is a traffic jam. I per-sonally went and told manydrivers to drive properly, but theyshouted at me instead. They said, that I was the only one complain-ing and that if there was a prob-lem I could get off and takeanother bus. What can the pas-sengers do when they drivershave this callous attitude?” ques-

tioned P Ramesh, a resident ofHakeempet who uses the publicbus to commute in the City.

“The APSRTC is busy imple-menting other schemes. Theyshould instead concentrate onteaching the drivers basic safetyrules, especially when it comes todriving.

“They should be heavily pun-ished if not up to the mark. Theyhave the responsibility of thekeeping the passengers safe, butthat rarely happens,” saidAnkitha Chauhan, an HR manag-er who uses the bus every day tocommute to work.

Ironically, officials at APSRTCclaim that they have the lowestaccident rate in the country.

“We conduct safety work-shops for the drivers and strictlyinstruct them to drive safely. Thenumber of fatal accidents toohave come down over the yearsas have major and minor acci-dents,” said Vijaylaxmi, deputychief traffic manager (schedules),APSRTC.

Watch out for killer busesRash and negligent driving by RTC bus drivers is the cause of a large number ofaccidents in the City but action is rarely taken against these high-handed men

The opposition sponsoredBharat Bandh to protest

the latest petrol hike had apartial impact in districtswhile it was largely ignored inHyderabad. Barri ng a solitaryincident of activists-policeclash, life was normal.

Tension mounted at RTCcrossroads in Narayangudawhen CPI activists tried toshut a wine shop atChikkadpally. In the melee, glass panes of the shop werebroken. Police intervened andbeat up a women activist. Shesustained minor injuries.Though life was normal in theCity, exams were postponed.

With the steep hike inpetrol prices, thecommon man islooking for alterna-

tives like opting for public trans-ports. But nothing seems to behelping them. Many complainthat the buses run by AndhraPradesh State Road TransportCorporation (APSRTC) are irregu-lar and over-crowded while theMulti-Modal Transport Service(MMTS) trains aren’t well con-nected.

For people like Binoy, market-ing executive in a pharmaceuticalcompany in the City, who needsto travel extensively around theCity, it’s tough to manage the fuelexpenses. “My company pays meonly `800 as monthly fuelallowance, which is actually myweekly expense. If I plan to dump

my vehicle and take public trans-port, it’s next to impossible. Whilethe APSRTC buses are alreadycrowded, I don’t want to risk mylife and the so-called MMTS doesnot connect to all major areas inthe City. Hence I am forced tobear the fire of the fuel price,” helaments.

“With a monthly salary of`15,000, the increased fuel pricewill only ruin my family’s month-ly budget,” bewails Binoy Jacob.

“When one uses public trans-port you are heavily dependenton them. You have to scheduleyourself accordingly which is notpossible always. As a workingprofessional, this can hamper myjob. This is something the govern-ment has failed to understand,”said Rita C, technical writer.

Currently, the MMTS trainsruns in two streams —Secunderabad to Falaknuma andSecunderabad to Hyderabad toLingampally. “Secunderabad andHitec City are the hub of passen-ger services for the City, where

MMTS services need to beimproved. Seeing the constantrise in fuel prices and shortage ofdiesel in the city, it’s time that thegovernment should plan somemore and new routes for thecommon man. From the past oneweek, I am opting for carpoolingas that’s the only alternative I amleft with,” said Ajay Nayak, anMNC employee.

However the officials have adifferent take on the issue “Thenew routes can only be started inthe second phase which will takesome more time. As of now wehave a total of 121 services in twostreams that are Secunderabad-Falaknuma and Secunderabad-Hyderabad-Falaknuma. Nearly1.05 lakh passengers travel dailyon these routes” said, ShakeelAhmed, South Central Railwayspokesman.

Many employees from areaslike Madhapur, Hitec City andGachibowli are now taking to car-pooling as there is no alternativeleft for them.

“Since I was a child, hockeyhas always been my pas-sion. Until high school, Ipracticed the sport.

Unfortunately, I had to let go of my zealthereafter as there was not much scopefor it. In Hyderabad, we don’t get anysupport from the government or anyassociations, which is why all the bestplayers in Indian hockey team are fromthe North, and none from AP,” recallsAarti A, a senior women roller hockeycaptain, who has won several interna-tional championships, but yet hasn't hadany remuneration.

Just like Aarti, there are several otherswho want to play and make a career inhockey but the City has denied them achance. Hyderabad lacks hockey play-grounds, the basic requirement toencourage the national game.

“We do not have proper grounds andthe ones that we have, ask for hefty fees. The government ought to take an initia-tive and help the association. We haven'tconducted any tournaments for the lackof grounds. The schools which used tohave hockey, now also do not coach stu-dents,” regrets T R Bhim Singh, joint sec-retary of Hyderabad Hockey.

A monument of neglectThe hockey stadium in Begumpet

was constructed in 1997 and the groundwas open to all until 2009. But threeyears ago, the police academy began tolook after it. No tournaments or leaguesare hosted on the ground.

The Sports Authority of AndhraPradesh (SAAP), though on special

request does use the ground, but it does-n't serve as a permanent solution.

“The ground was constructed for aninternational match. The ground has anastro turf. However, the life of the turf isnow over and we need to construct a newone. The cost to construction wouldcome up to `5 crore, but we do not havethe funds. Hence we are making do withwhatever we have. The ground is nowused only for practice and a few selectmatches are held here. Apart from that, the ground is not fit,” said Ram Babu,

DGP, AP police sports office.Ram Babu wondered, “Who will give

us the money to repair it? `5 crore is a bigamount and the government does nothelp us nor does the media. For Indians, sport is synonymous with cricket.”Everywhere one hears the complaint ofhow the government pampered cricketat the cost of other games.

The Gymkhana ground, which canhost hockey games, is in a pathetic state. Moreover, if any association wants topractice, they must pay huge amount

which not all associations can afford.“I coach in Gymkhana. The ground is

bad for children to practice. It was built40 years ago, and no follow-up has beendone on it. Given the condition, it's diffi-cult to coach and participate at thenational level games.

“Since four-and-a-half-years, noteven one league match has been con-ducted in Hyderabad. I have been train-ing students for that past six years. If,after one-and-a-half-year of practicing,no match is played, people will loseinterest and give up. This is the reasonwhy we have nobody from AP playing atnational level,” says Kamesh D, a coachin SAAP.

With Indian hockey team qualifyingfor the Olympics, it is ironic that the Cityhas no proper ground for hockey playersto practice and conduct matches.

Internal politics among associationsis also adding to the existing problems.“There are two teams, one is the HockeyIndia, and the other is Indian HockeyFederation. The former is a nationalteam who plays internationally. However, due to the international clash-es, those playing for both the teams aresuspended.

“Secondly, we don't have affordablegrounds. The one at Gachibowli charges`4,100 per session and it is not in the Citylimits. That is why not many studentsdon’t go,” says Kamesh.

Schools in the City also do not haveany good grounds. The ones that we usedto have, are now are being used for play-ing cricket. The number of school teamshave reduced from 15 to 5.

“Even if we want students, they donot choose the sport. Not just students, even parents in the City also do notencourage the game. We decided to giveit a miss,” says Aditya N, PT teacher,Daffodil School.

A national shame Not many know hockey, not cricket, is our national game. The City hasjust few grounds and little scope for the youths who love this game

Meet Balraman. At theoutset he may seemordinary, a computerprofessional who

loves teaching, a chess player anda conversationalist. The 42-year-old, P Balraman is blind and hislove for chess is not hindered bythe lack of eyesight.

“I started playing 10-12 yearsago with my father, who has beenvery instrumental in teaching meeverything about chess,” he says.

In town for the Devnar Schoolof Blind Chess NationalChampionship, Balraman is oneamong many blind chess playersfrom all over India, vying for thechampionship title.

Balraman is well read andspeaks perfect, flawless English.“Back then, cricket and gamecommentary were my only chan-nels of learning. That apart, Ilearnt computers through anaudio-guided software that allowsme to teach other people whohave not been blessed with eye-sight,” he says.

How do the blind play chess? One might imagine it being atough affair, but these people areat ease with the game. With spe-cially designed chess boardsmade to easily represent pieces, they touch, feel and memorise theblacks and whites on the board. ABraille script denoting the moves, punched on paper, keeps track ofthe game. This, and a lot of prac-tice and patience, is what it takesfor them to play chess.

The story does not end there. Most of them have followed theWorld Chess Championship like

fans of any other sport would do,despite their disability hinderingthem from watching it. “We listento the moves made and visualisethe entire board. Anand, nowbeing the fifth world champion, played it really slow this time. Infact, I was sure of his victory overGelfand at some points but sur-prisingly he had offered a draw,”says Balraman.

Those among the favouriteplayers of the blind include, GarryKasparov, Mikhael Tahl, Karpov. Not everybody approves ofAnand. Chintan, another blind

player, says, “He is wilting in hisstandard games. That apart,Anand should try to play asexceptionally as he does in theblitz, blindfold games.”

They follow the sport like anyother fan. With full of appropriateoohs and aahs, their disabilitydoes not deter them from plot-ting, strategising and wiping outpieces from the board, with thekeenness and immaculate timing, like that of some of the best players. Do not give them sympa-thy, give them the opportunity toperform.

Direct to Home service(DTH) has been soughtafter by customers withthe offering of HD and

interactive and value added ser-vices. With over 45 million house-holds already subscribing to DTHservices, the industry is set to growfurther during the upcoming digi-tization phase, where consumersmay opt for a shift from the ana-logue to the digital platform.

The High Definition (HD) mar-ket is growing with the help ofDTH services and vice-versa. Allthe major players are offering con-tent on HD. The viewers are get-ting ready with HD televisionswith the falling prices. A full HD 22inch television costing less than`15,000, It is obvious that everytelevision will have HD feature innear future. Though the customeris getting an HD TV at a reasonableprice, he has to pay extra to availHD channels.

“Obviously with HD there is anextra expense involved. Initiallythe acceptability was slow andindulgence was experimental innature from the consumers. Butnow, people have opened up tothis phenomenon; we do have asignificant percentage of viewerstoday who are willing to pay forexperiencing supreme quality ser-vices. The difference in costs isalso not much right now,” saidspokesperson, Videocon D2H.

DTH operators have an edgeover cable operators with the qual-ity of the content and number ofHD channels. Most of the cableoperators could not provide HDservices to the customers.

“HD will certainly prove to beone of the major product offeringsthat will garner huge interest espe-cially amongst a certain section of

audience. It is going to be a USPthat cable operators would not beable to match. As far as conversionof feed is concerned, we can cer-tainly foresee this as a growingtrend but in the end there wouldbe a few genres which would bemore sought after than the otherskeeping in mind the high costsinvolved with producing HD feed. Most major channels will eventu-ally start providing a dual feed ofHD and Standard definition (SD),”he said.

DTH platforms are offeringwide variety of services apart fromjust enjoying TV. Today the cus-tomer can easily afford an HDrecorder, which can record hoursof HD content enabling the viewerto rewind, record and pause LiveTV. Airtel has launched a newinteractive service, iEnglish to help

customer hone their Englishspeaking skills within the comfortof their homes.

“New technologies that youmay see from DTH services arepush video, advanced gaming andprobably even internet surfing. Alot of R & D is happening related toall these features but it is very diffi-cult to pinpoint as technology isevolving and sky is the limit.Currently Videocon d2h is offeringRecord, Pause, Rewind Live Tele -vision, Pay TV, Active Services andMovies on Demand plus it is theonly DTH player to offer an exclu-sive active channel with 3-D feed.

To attract customers to theirservices, some DTH operatorsshowed channels which have abetter quality than SD channels asa HD. Many customers fall prey forthis and subscribed.

NEW DELHI: Perhaps the mostcontroversial tenure of anyIndian Army chief endsThursday when Gen VK Singhhangs up his boots after over 41years of service. Much of his 26months at the helm of a 1.13 mil-lion strong army were spent inpublicly battling the civilianestablishment and his own mili-tary rivals.

But the end of his termmarks the beginning of a longpath towards recovery from themess that the institution calledthe Integrated Headquarters ofthe Ministry of Defence (Army)finds itself in.

What began as a promisingtenure on April Fools’ Day in 2010with VK Singh making the rightnoises about “improving theinternal health” of the army hasnow turned into unpleasantchapter that may be difficult toforget given the nature of the con-troversies — from a seeminglyinnocuous age row to the criticalissue of defence preparedness.

“Let him retire peacefully,” iswhat defence minister AKAntony is believed to have toldsome defence ministry officials,

upset over the latest controversyfollowing VK Singh’s televisioninterviews on his last weekendin office.

VK Singh, otherwise a verypopular man in the forces whocommend him for his upright-ness, had blamed some sectionsof the defence ministry for plant-ing stories in the media to fix him.

The wait for his retirement is

expected to be over on May 31forenoon, when VK Singh handsover the reins of the world’s sec-ond largest standing army afterChina to Lt Gen Bikram Singh.

VK Singh’s age row —whether he was born on May 10in 1950 or 1951 — should havebeen a routine matter of littleinterest to anybody outside theestablishment. But the issue

went up all the way to theSupreme Court, which put anend to the row by virtuallyupholding the defence ministrydecision on 1950.

Then came the bombshell ofan allegation about retired lieu-tenant general Tejinder Singhoffering a bribe of `14 crore toclear an order for what the armychief called “substandard” Tatramilitary trucks.

The bribery storm, firstreported in a newspaper, camewhen the budget session of par-liament was in progress. And thenation saw an emotional Antonydefending himself — he hadbeen informed by the army chiefin 2010 about the offer — forcinghim to order a Central Bureau ofInvestigation (CBI) probe.

Tejinder Singh has sued VKSingh and his aides from thearmy headquarters for defama-tion over a press release thatnamed him.

Muddying the waters further, there was another shocker of areport that VK Singh had autho-rised the bugging of Antony’soffice and the country’s top lead-ership at the peak of his age row.Again, there was vehement denialfrom the defence ministry. IANS

A marginal, and often derid-ed literary figure in many othercountries, Rand is a perennialpresence on Indian bestsellerlists and regularly name-checked on the “favourite

author” list of influential Indians— from company CEOs toBollywood stars.

Until 2007, Indians conduct-ed more Google searches for theRussian-American novelist thanresidents of any other country, and in recent years have cededthe top spot only to Americans.

The popularity in India ofRand's seminal novels, AtlasShrugged and The Fountain -head, are hard to explain. AFP

NEW DELHI: India declinedto sell nuclear technology toIran, Iraq and Libya in the1980s in spite of being offered“huge” sums of money, said aleading defence journal.

Iran asked for nucleartechnology as well as a militarytraining school for its officerssomewhere in India, againoffering substantial monetarycompensation for both, butIndira Gandhi said Indiawould not play its friendsagainst one another.

India had in fact beentraining Iraqi Air Force pilots, thanks to the commonality ofthe Soviet aircraft with the twocountries. The defence coop-eration had begun before theoutbreak of the Iran-Iraq war,

REACHING OUT

Who wants the gobbledygook?WASHINGTON: Why not say“change” rather than “effect modi-fications”, or “publish” rather than“promulgate”, or “pay” instead of“remunerate”? So say plain speak-ing advocates fighting to end “gob-bledygook”.

Winning such a battle “wouldbenefit everyone,” said thosegathered in Washington last weekfor a three-day conference aimedat banishing jargon from laws, application forms, public notices, and even user manuals for televi-sion sets.

The event was organised in theUS capital by “Clarity”, a world-wide group of lawyers, top man-agers and heads of governmentservices who argue for the use ofplain language in place of legalese.

And it drew people from 20countries, including Australia,France, Qatar, Estonia, and theScandinavian nations.

“How can you have a democ-racy when the citizen does notunderstand what the government

is saying,” said Annetta Cheek, board chair of the Center for PlainLanguage, at the event.

“It’s becoming a more andmo re common perception in allse ctors, that they have to bemore inclusive in their commu-nication.” The United States in2010 adopted a law encouragingthe simplification of administra-tive language.

The Swedish government, meanwhile, employs five lawyersto write its laws in simple lan-guage, and Portugal has intro-duced similar measures.

In France for example, legalguidance on victims’ rights is diffi-cult to collate because there are somany documents and so manyreferences that they are “obscure”,said Olivia Zarcate, a young legalspecialist at the conference.

The aim of plain English cam-paigners is to heighten awarenessin government and business cir-cles about the damaging effectthat obscure, badly-worded lan-

guage has on the population.

Restore faith“In the last five years there’s

been a big change,” said Cheek, a

former “plain language coordina-tor,” at the US Federal AviationAdministration (FAA), which regu-lates and oversees civil aviation.

But one cited example of gov-

ernment jargon showed that 36words — including “calisthenics”(a form of gymnastics) — wereused in a public health brochure tooutline what people should do tolose weight.

In a more sweeping sugges-tion, Cheek said the damagingeffects of jargon had been seen inthe global financial crisis in 2008,as waves of mortgage ownersfailed to understand what theywere signing up to. “The worldfinancial crisis would have beenless damaging if people hadunderstood what those long docu-ments said,” Cheek said. “If theyhad understood that in five yearstheir interest would go through theroof, that if they didn’t pay theircredit card on time, their interestwould go through the roof,” lessharm would have been done.

Joseph Kimble, a professor, said the stripping out of jargon, would benefit both the writers ofdocuments as well as the peoplewho read them. AFP

This might be one of the most con-troversial articles you will read thishour; or maybe this day (assumingyou don’t read any other article).Certain aspects in life we take for

granted, there is only one way of doing andthat way is the way I’m doing it now. Thethought of there being any other way isunheard of just because it defeats the entirepurpose of the action’s existence. I believe itwas in 2005, while visiting my cousin, that Inoticed the unthinkable. While eating, he didsomething that was unthinkable. But then, hethought of it, so he did it.

When you read this, your first thought willbe, of course that is the right way to do itbecause it’s the only way you can do it. I amreferring to the way you eat dal and rice. Inthis instance, I am talking about the soupytype of dal, the kind that is like water. All mylife I’ve eaten it in the following manner: Itake about ¾ a bowl of rice and then add justenough dal to wet the rice and maybe buildup a small reservoir at the bottom. Then I sawwhat this guy did, crazy guy! He drowned therice with the dal. The dal filled the bowl andthe rice was nowhere to be seen. We bothfound it rather amusing that the other personwas eating it the “wrong” way.

Previously we never had gotten into theparticulars of this. However, I decided to chatwith him about this. “Why do you eat it likethat? I asked. “Because it tastes better, plus, Idon’t have to taste the rice,” he replied. Hethen told me something even crazier — seri-ous; I’m not making this up. I don’t evenknow if I could repeat what he said withoutcausing a riot, but it’s been 24 hours sincesomeone has had something to riot about, sohere we go.

He told me that if he had ½ a bowl of daland ½ a bowl of rice, he would add the rice tothe dal! YES, he said that! What crazy thingshe talks? But wait, he gets even crazier. Hesays he only does that with his wife’s cooking;and that if he was eating, say, Thai curry at arestaurant, he would place less than normalamounts on the rice.

Just writing about this is making meunderstand it less and less, because it justdoesn’t make sense to drown the rice. If youwanted that, then you should have orderedsoup with some rice. What he did is the same

as pouring milk into the cereal box and theneating it from the box... exactly my thoughts...CRAZY! Side note: I’m starting to get hungry.

But the madness doesn’t stop there; hedoes the same with idli and sambar. He puts2-3 in a bowl and then proceeds to drownthem with sambar until they disappear.Once, they got lost in the bowl, he had to useGPS to locate them.

I have enclosed a picture of how it shouldbe eaten. This method was approved by TheNational Council on Eating Indian Food –Department of Liquid Based Foods.

Let me finish telling you the crazy thingsI’ve endured. Some time back, somethingcrazier happened — yes, even crazier thanthis crazy guy’s craziness. I was having lunchwith my parents and my dad placed just asmall amount dal on a mountain of rice. I’mstarting to think this is hereditary (heterozy-gous dominant). So to all the people readingthis, please email me at [email protected] personal method of eating it and whatyour parents’ methods are; I want to researchthis. Once I get the results, I shall publish itfor you’ll to read. And if a riot starts andsomeone loses their rickshaw or house, please let me know so I can write about thattoo. (I really want waffles now).

BANDHS WILL NOT HELP EASE THE BURDENon aam admi

For a State that has been riddled with bandhs over the last couple of years (be it due tothe Telangana agitation or Jagan’s arrest; we’ve really lost track), the All India Bandhis nothing but just another burden. Considering the bandh has been called to protest

the petrol price hike, it does seem a bit ironic doesn’t it, since all we’re achieving with this isnothing but loss of another day’s pay? Besides, the thousands of crores that will be lost in

terms of man hours due to the bandh will only add to the woes of our already saggingeconomies. Earlier, when the Opposition party called for a bandh, most people would rejoice

at the ‘unofficial chutti’ that came as a respite in the midst of a hectic week. But today solutions are what we need and not random strikes and bandhs. A solution to this

unprecedented rise in prices, thanks to out-of-the-blue petrol price hikes, and more account-ability from our government would definitely be welcome. A hike in salaries that is at par

with the skyrocketing inflation will help too…

Bones

As the title suggests, the series revolvesaround a team of medical experts

who solve crimes and mysteries byexamining the remains of the victims and

deduce how the crime had been committed.Forensic analyst Dr Temperance 'Bones'

Brennan and FBI agent Seeley Booth are theleads. Booth is the rustic, typical FBI agent whobelieves in brute force, while Bones is a seriousworkaholic but is not so sure when it comes to

social skills. This combination has ruled television sets since 2005 and now it has been

renewed for a new series.

Some may say he is snobbish, others say heis highly cultured with a love of good food,

good wine and the opera. His one big down-fall is unexplained reasoning — he must dis-cover a reason why someone did a particularthing due to his scientific mind. After Frasierand other sitcom roles, Grammer in 2009 onceagain tried to recapture his former sitcomglory on the short-lived series, Hank, playing aCEO who loses his job. Before long, however,Grammer bounced back with a new dramaticseries, Boss. His portrayal of a devious politi-cian won Grammer numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe.

Frasier's younger brother, also a noted psy-chiatrist, with perhaps an even more cul-

tured lifestyle, he is jealous of his brother'ssuccess via his radio show and so dismissesit as 'pop' psychology. In 2010, Pierce hadhis first starring film role as Warwick Wilsonin the dark comedy/psychological thriller ThePerfect Host.

Frasier and Niles' father who now lives withFrasier after a combination of old age,

being shot in the hip and a fall in the showerprompted Frasier to take him in. Martin's bestfriend is his dog, Eddie, who presence isanother annoyance for Frasier. Martin is thereal life antidote to the Crane boys' snobbishways and often brings them back down toearth with a bite of a reality sandwich. In2011, he had two guest appearances on theTV Land sitcom Hot In Cleveland, playing awaiter and a love interest for Betty White'scharacter, Elka.

Kegel’s canhelp a leakybladder

Dr Divya T Sudarshan

I recently had a baby and I find thatI can’t control my bladder. This isembarrassing for me. Is there any-thing I can do?

I think we need a little lesson onwhat causes incontinence (or a leakybladder) in pregnancy and postdelivery. The hormones that increasein pregnancy usually allow the mus-cles of the back and pelvic floor tostretch to allow the baby to comeout. These muscles take a while torecover the tone and strength.

Around 70 per cent patientsretain bladder control, but in a fewwho had a difficult delivery thereturn to normalcy may be a chal-lenge. The accidental leak of urineyou’re experiencing, perhaps whenyou laugh, sneeze, cough or exercise,is called stress incontinence. Sometips for better healing are avoidstraining too much, eat healthy andrelax to regain strength, try to losethe pregnancy flab, drink adequatewater, try a bladder training (whereyou consciously try and time whenyou go to the bathroom, and thusincrease bladder control). You couldalso try Kegel’s or (pelvic floor exer-cises) this will eventually help mostwomen regain bladder control.

How to do Kegel’sBreathe in and as you breathe out, pull up and in down below as thoughyou are trying to stop yourself pass-ing urine or passing wind. Try tohold the squeeze for up to 10 sec-onds while breathing normally.Relax and wait at least 10 secondsbefore trying the next exercise.Repeat the squeeze 10 times, threetimes a day.

The wonderful thing about theseexercises is you can do them whilewatching TV, cooking or working onthe computer. Whenever!

Most incontinence problemsresolve in eight after delivery. If youare still not feeling better, do meetyour doctor.

THURSDAY, MAY 31, 201218Holistic view of mind, body and soulH‑FactorWith growing age a number of health problems come up. We talk to doctors and

get the lowdown on what tests should be in your to do list once you cross 40

TESTING TIMES

It is important that we takecaution and get a check-updone frequently in order tokeep health problems under

check. “Today, as people havestarted to grow health con-scious, they are visiting hospitalsthemselves and requesting doc-tors to get a master healthcheck-up done. These masterhealth check-ups include allkinds of tests such as bloodsugar, cholesterol, kidney func-tion, ECG etc,” says Dr AftabAhmed, senior physician, ApolloHospital, Secunderabad.

n Pap smearCervical cancer is one of themost common forms of cancerthat effect women. It is the can-cer of the cervix caused by bothHPV-18 and HPV-16 strains ofthe Human Papillomaviruses.Dr Rupa Reddy, assistant profes-sor, OBG department of a medi-cal college, says, “One of thetests suggested for womenabove the age of 40 are papsmear tests. These testsmust be done onceevery year for the firstthree years and afterthat once everythree years.” Thepap smear test canbe done before awoman turns 40too as allwomenwho

are sexually active are at a risk ofcervical cancer.

n Ultrasound Ultrasound is one of the sim-plest medical test that candetect various ailments.According to Dr Rupa, “Womenshould get an ultrasound doneperhaps once a year and once afew years to know about anypossible health problems. It isnot a specific test but a generalone.” This ultrasound also helpsdetect problems like ovarianand uterine cancer. Males tooshould get an ultrasound done.

n MammographyAnother common and growingcause of cancer among womanis breast cancer that is caused inthe tissues of the breast. A mam-mography helps detect breastcancer or identify the lump inthe breast. Dr Rupa says, “Oncea woman crosses 40 years of age,she should get a mammographydone. This can be done once inthree years.”

n ThyroidAnother common problemplaguing women is thyroid(both

hyperthyroidism

and hypothyroidism). It is thusimportant that women get a thy-roid function test done.

n Blood sugarTesting for diabetes is one of theimportant tests that a personshould undergo. According to DrSunil Kumar, consultant cardiol-ogist, Apollo Hospital and presi-dent AP CSI, “Getting a testdone for blood sugar levels isimportant especially if a personhas a family history of diabetes. In case of family history of dia-betes the test should be con-ducted once in six months. Forothers, a test needs to be con-ducted once a year.”

n Lipid Profile“A lipid profile is a test whichshows the good cholesterol, badcholesterol and triglyceride levelof a person. If a person is under-going treatment for cholesterol,he should get the test done onceevery six months, otherwiseonce a year,” Dr Sunil says.

n BP check upHigh BP is a growing problem inthe company and should also bedone. Dr Sunil mentions that a

person should get

their blood pressure checked uponce every six months.

n PSA test (Prostate-specific antigen)

Dr Sunil says, “Prostate cancertesting needs to be done for aperson with increased age (oncethey cross the age of 50).” ThePSA which stands for Prostate-specific antigen is a cornerstonefor prostate cancer detection.

n TreadmillIf a person has a family historyof heart disease, treadmill canalso be conducted. This is tohelp find out how the heartreacts in a stressful situation,”says Dr Aftab. It is known as car-diac stress test.

Keeping a check is impor-tant but Dr Ahmed mentionsthat the need for a particulartest may depend on factors. If aperson is living a sedentarylifestyle and obese than they aremore at risk of certain health ail-ments. These tests may be ableto detect an ailment that onemay not even be aware one has.such as if they have chances ofdeveloping heart disease later inlife, treatment can begin earlyand restrict the disease.

Dr Vamsy also says, “Lung can-cer normally takes many years todevelop.” Incidence tends to peakbetween the ages of 55 and 65.

The changes in the lung howev-er can begin almost as soon as aperson is exposed to carcinogenicchemicals. If you stop smokinghowever, the risk of lung cancerdecreases. There are many mythsand questions that people havewhen it comes to quitting the habitof smoking.

Why should we say no to tobacco?Dr Vamsy: Tobacco is the leadingcause of cancer especially lung can-cer. Damage to the lungs beginsearly in smokers, and cigarettesmokers have a lower level of lungfunction than non-smokers. Thiscontinues to worsen as long as theperson smokes. Cigarette smokingcauses many lung diseases that canbe nearly as bad as lung cancer.Chronic bronchitis and emphyse-ma are two types of chronicobstructive pulmonary disease thatcan make it hard to breathe andcan cause serious health prob-lems — even death.”

How many smokers are detectedwith cancer in a year? Dr Vamsy: Most cases of lung can-cer deaths are caused by cigarettesmoking, 90 per cent in men and 80per cent in women.

How can one stop smoking?Dr Vamsy: To stop smoking one hasto resolve to quit smoking for his /her own good. Some handy tips toquit smoking are n The first few days, drink lots of

water and fluids to help flush outthe nicotine and other poisons

from your body. Remember thatnicotine is as addictive as heroinand cocaine.

n Remember that the urge tosmoke only lasts a few minutes, and will then pass. The urgesgradually become farther andfarther apart as the days go by.

n Do your very best to stay awayfrom alcohol, sugar and coffeethe first week or longer, as thesetend to stimulate the desire for acigarette. Take help and supportfrom family and friends.

What is smokeless tobacco and whyis it harmful?Dr Vamsy: Beedis, cigars, pipes, spitand snuff are types of smokeless

tobacco and they all cause cancers. There is no safe way to use tobacco.

Will I gain weight if I stop smoking?Dr Vamsy: Initially, yes. Avoid fattyfoods, as your metabolism will slowdown a bit without the nicotine, and you may gain weight even ifyou eat the same amount as beforequitting. So discipline about diet isextra important now. No one eversaid acquiring new habits would be easy!

How is passive smoking harmful?Dr Vamsy: Passive smoking (inhal-ing second hand smoke) happenswhen non-smokers breathe otherpeople’s tobacco smoke. Thisincludes mainstream smoke(smoke that is inhaled and thenexhaled into the air by smokers)and side stream smoke (smoke that

comes directly from the burningtobacco in cigarettes).Envioronmental tobacco smoking(ETS) contains the same harmfulchemicals as the smoke that smok-ers inhale.

There is strong evidence thatETS causes serious damage tohuman health. Each year about3,400 non-smoking adults die oflung cancer and about 46,000 die ofheart disease as a result of breath-ing second hand smoke. It can alsoaffect non-smokers by causingasthma and other respiratory prob-lems, eye irritation, headaches, nausea, and dizziness.

Children whose parents smokeare more likely to suffer from asth-ma, pneumonia, bronchitis, earinfections, coughing, wheezing, andincreased mucus production.Babies of parents who smoke havea greater chance of dying of suddeninfant death syndrome (SIDS).

Can quitting really help a lifelongsmoker?Dr Vamsy: Yes. It is never too late toquit using tobacco. The soonersmokers quit, the more they canreduce their chances of getting can-cer and other diseases. Within min-utes of smoking the last cigarette, the body begins to restore itself.

Are there some benefits of quittingthat I’ll notice right away?Dr Vamsy: Kicking the tobaccohabit offers some rewards thatyou’ll notice right away and somethat will show up more slowly overtime. These benefits can improveyour day-to-day life a lot. Food willtaste better. Your sense of smellreturns to normal. Your breath, hair, and clothes smell better. Yourteeth and fingernails stop yellow-ing. Ordinary activities leave youless out of breath (for example, climbing a flight of stairs or doinglight housework). Quitting alsohelps stop the damaging effects oftobacco on how you look, includingpremature wrinkling of your skinand gum disease.

How to Play KakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is alsosuitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play Kakuro?’, wellhere are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike insudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells likein a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells willcontain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly:In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you

will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14.Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is donethrough elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work outthe answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid com-binations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Volleyball: Therace gets tighter

World champion DaiGreene and 400mhurdles rivalBershawn Jackson

tried to bury the hatchet here onWednesday after the Briton’srecent spat with his Americanopposition.

Greene has upset his USrivals by calling 400m Olympicchampion LaShawn Merritt a“liar, thief and cheat” whileallegedly saying the Americansin his own event were “overrat-ed” — something he claims wastaken out of context.

Two-time Olympic 400mhurdles champion Angelo Taylorresponded by accusing Greeneof “trash-talking” and saying hewas too slow to win in Londonlater this year.

And Jackson said Greene had“cashed a cheque that he can’tcash” because of his winningtime of 48.26sec in last year’sWorld Championship final inDaegu.

It was not considered a par-ticularly quick time for a WorldChampionship final but thenagain, Jackson only finished

sixth with Taylor seventh. But Jackson insists that the

Americans are still the best.“Most athletes from America

say the US Olympic trials are likethe Olympics so I just want to getready for my trials,” he saidahead of his meeting withGreene here on Thursday.

“Greene’s a great competitorbut first there’s our trials. The

same three never make theteam.

“Over the last four or fiveyears it’s never been the sameconsistent three guys, there’salways a new guy.

“For me the first objective isto make the team and after that Ican hope to make my dream areality.

“No one runs to come sec-

ond or third, we’re all trying toachieve the same goal but themain thing is to make the teambecause without making theteam you don’t have a shot at anOlympic medal at all.”

And the man known asBatman because “I’ve got bigears and I fly when I run”, saysthe media have blown this spatout of proportion.

“The media are making itmore than it is, there’s no prob-lem between me and David (Dai)Greene,” said Jackson.

“He’s world champion, hewas the better man and won thatday, I take nothing away fromhim.

“We’re two great competi-tors, we’re the best at our event,we do what we’re supposed to doand that’s put on a show for thecrowd who pay to watch.”

Greene concurred and wasfull of respect for his cross-Atlantic rivals.

“There’s a lot that goes on innewspapers but don’t believe allyou read in newspapers,” hesaid.

DUBLIN: Just six months ago James McCleanwas languishing in Sunderland’s reserve teambut now the Republic of Ireland winger plansto cap a fairytale rise by stealing the spotlightat Euro 2012.

McClean’s surprise call-up to Ireland’sEuro squad has given the 23-year-old anunexpected chance to share the same stageas stars like Xavi, Andrea Pirlo and LukaModric and he has no intention of wastingthe opportunity.

Although his only international experi-ence to date remains his debut as a substituteagainst the Czech Republic in February,McClean has been ear-marked by Ireland bossGiovanni Trapattoni as a potential game-changer after a superb second half of the sea-son with Sunderland.

McClean will have to compete with expe-rienced campaigners like Damien Duff,Stephen Hunt and Aiden McGeady for a placein Trapattoni’s team but he has no doubts hecan make an impact in group stage clashesagainst Spain, Croatia and Italy.

“I’m in the squad and I’m delighted to bein the squad. But I’m not going to be here justto make up the numbers and leave it at that,"he said. “We have the training camp and thefriendlies coming up and I want to show himthat I can leave my mark.”

PLAYER TO WATCH

DUBLIN: Giovanni Trapattoni haswarned the Republic of Ireland’s Euro2012 rivals that his side will relish theirrole as the tournament’s underdogs.

Sharing the same stage as the all-starcasts of Spain, Germany, France and theNetherlands will initially leaveTrapattoni’s journeymen pushed firmlyinto the shadows when the tournamentgets underway in Poland and theUkraine on June 8.

When they were drawn in a Group Cincluding world and European champi-ons Spain, as well as Italy and Croatia, itwould have been understandable ifIreland prepared to travel to easternEurope more in hope than expectationof stealing the spotlight.

Bookmakers certainly expect littlefrom the Irish, who have been installedas such heavy outsiders at 80-1 that, ofthe 16 teams competing, only Denmarkare regarded as less likely winners.

Trapattoni, however, takes a farmore upbeat approach to his team’sfirst appearance at the EuropeanChampionships since 1988 and theirfirst at any major tournament sincethe 2002 World Cup in Japan andSouth Korea.

Inspired by Denmark’s remarkabletriumph at Euro 1992 when the teamarrived as last-minute replacements forwar-torn Yugoslavia and ended up tak-ing home the trophy, Trapattoni is con-

vinced his players can confound the crit-ics. In terms of star power there is nodenying Ireland are very much a supportact in a group featuring Spain’s Xavi andAndres Iniesta, Italian talents likeAntonio Cassano and Daniele De Rossiand Croatia midfielder Luka Modric.

Whatever their fate, Ireland’sprogress to the finals is cause enough forcelebration after such a long absencefrom major tournaments.

Ireland open their campaign againstCroatia in Poznan on June 10 beforetackling Spain in Gdansk four days later.

Their final group fixture is a poten-tially epic encounter with Trapattoni’snative Italy in Poznan on June 18.

Realistically, Trapattoni’s men arelikely to have to beat Croatia to stand achance of qualifying.

On a wing and a prayerMaking just their second appearance at a European Championship

finals, Giovanni Trapattoni’s team will need to overcome former winnersSpain and Italy to progress from Group C

LOS ANGELES: Filipino fightking Manny Pacquiao wants todeliver something special againstTimothy Bradley on June 9, toerase the taste of his narrow victo-ry over Juan Manuel Marquez inNovember.

“It’s really important because,of course, everybody knows mylast fight was very close,” Pacquiaosaid of the need if not for a knock-out, at least for a fan-pleasingshow. Pacquiao edged Marquez bymajority decision on November12, stretching his victory streak to15 fights but leaving his Mexicanfoe shouting robbery.

Adding more controversy to analready-heated rivalry, two judgeshanded Pacquiao the 12-roundvictory by margins of 116-112 and115-113 while the third scored thefight a 114-114 draw.

In Marquez, Pacquiao hadbeen taking on a familiar oppo-nent, having beaten the Mexicanin 2004 and 2008.

In Bradley, Pacquiao says he’llbe facing a younger, “hungry”fighter, who has said this high-pro-file bout for Pacquiao’s WorldBoxing Organization welterweightbelt is the start of a new phase inhis career. “This is like my firstfight all over again,” said Bradley, the WBO light welterweight cham-

pion who boasts a record of 28-0with 12 knockouts.

“In order to beat the championyou’ve got to take it to the champi-on,” Bradley said last week. “We

are setting out to win this fight andnot sit around and look pretty. Iam going to take it to Pacquiao.”

Roach said that could be justwhat’s needed to draw the bestfrom Pacquiao. “I think the wayBradley is going to come forwardand force a fight, we’re going to seea great Pacquiao,” Roach said.“Bradley’s a tough guy, veryresilient. But being a tough guydoesn’t win fights.”

Pacquiao, who drew a throngof media to the Wild Card gym inHollywood on Wednesday,

promised he isn’t underestimatingthe 28-year-old Bradley.

“He’s a hungry fighter,”Pacquiao said, although he madelight of the age difference, sayingthat having built a record of 54-3-2with 38 knockouts at the age of 33,he feels much younger.

“I’m still thinking I am 25, 26years old,” Pacquiao laughed.

Trainer Freddie Roach saidhe’d been impressed with theintensity Pacquiao has brought tohis preparation. Roach shookthings up a bit by bringing in newsparring partners who didn’t knowPacquiao, weren’t friends andwouldn’t go easy on the champion.

“It’s worked out real well,”Roach said Wednesday. “They’reaggressive, I think it’s helped.”

On a different tack, however,Pacquiao was also joined in theUnited States by his wife and chil-dren, a further sign that the familytroubles he said distracted himbefore his last bout were behindhim. “Manny’s happy they’rehere,” Roach said. “It’s great.”

Roach admitted he had someconcerns that Pacquiao’s newdevotion to Bible study and spiri-tual matters might hinder him inthe ring, with a newfound “com-passion” somehow affecting hiskiller instinct.

Liverpool are on the brink ofappointing BrendanRodgers as their new man-ager after Swansea City’s

chairman, Huw Jenkins, acceptedhe could not refuse the 39-year-old Northern Irishman the oppor-tunity of a move to Anfield.

Two weeks after sacking KennyDalglish for finishing eighth in thePremier League, Liverpool’s own-ers, Fenway Sports Group, con-cluded the search for his replace-ment during talks with Rodgers inLondon.

The former Watford andReading manager agreed a three-year contract with John W Henryand Tom Werner, Liverpool’s prin-cipal owner and chairman respec-

tively, before informing Swanseahe wished to quit after a hugelysuccessful two-year spell at theLiberty Stadium.

All that stands in the way ofRodgers being confirmed asLiverpool manager is an agree-ment on a compensation packagewith Swansea. Under the terms ofthe three-and-a-half year contractthat Rodgers signed in January, theWelsh club are entitled to around£5m.

A predecessor at Swansea,Roberto Martínez, was also in therunning to succeed Dalglish butdespite interrupting a holiday tomeet Henry in Miami lastThursday, he had no further con-tact with Liverpool after the week-end.

Both Rodgers and Martínez

made it known to Liverpool’s own-ers that they would be reluctant towork within the new managementstructure intended for Anfield. That proposal, with Louis van Gaalapproached to be sporting direc-tor but inevitably wanting far-

reaching control at the club, is nowin doubt.

Liverpool’s successful pursuitof Rodgers, who initially rejectedtheir offer of an interview as hehad no wish to be on a lengthy listof candidates, was confirmed in amagnanimous statement from theSwansea chairman.

Jenkins stated, “I was contact-ed by Liverpool last night and theyexpressed their wish to speak toBrendan. I had a discussion withBrendan to talk about their inter-est and his views on whether hewanted to speak to Liverpool. Heexpressed his wish with me to dothat and he has spoken toLiverpool today.

“Following on from discus-sions with Liverpool’s owners,Brendan has informed us that he

would like to take up their offer tomanage Liverpool. At the momentwe are currently in talks with theowners to agree compensation. Weare trying to finalise that withinthe next 24 hours. Although we arevery disappointed to lose such atalented, young British manager,we didn’t wish to stand in his way.As always at Swansea City, we wantpeople working here who are fullycommitted to the task ahead. Wewish Brendan every success in thefuture.”

Gus Poyet, Ian Holloway andAlan Curbishley are among theearly favourites to succeedRodgers at Swansea and Jenkinsadded, “We will always remaingood friends and we thank him forall his hard work and passion overthe past two years,” Jenkins added.
