There is clear recognition of the ways to promote social and emotional health and wellbeing and the need for strengths-based, wholistic and empowering ways of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, organisations and communities. This specialisation stream offers an innovative learning experience that enables students to gain deeper understanding and necessary skills to contribute effectively to the national effort to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing. Our methods are designed to stimulate transformational learning and enhance application of public health skills and principles to virtually any health or social discipline. You do not need to be working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health to get the most out of this program. About this stream The Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing stream provides significant opportunities to examine Indigenous- specific content and further understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, cultures and worldviews. The two stream defining courses enable students to immerse themselves in active study of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives of health and wellbeing. These are externally delivered using a blended, self-directed learning approach and include compulsory pre-term workshops, scenario-based learning, online group discussions, sourcing and critiquing evidence- based research and program and policy documentation, as well as individual, professional and group information sharing and self-reflection. Students are also able to select three additional courses from a wide range of recommended electives appropriate to their interests. This may include a research project or internship in Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing. Who are our students? This stream is targeted towards students with an interest in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health to cohesively address the physical, psychosocial, cultural and environmental determinants of health and wellbeing of Indigenous and non- Indigenous Australians.

Who should apply? Entry requirements for the specialisation in Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing include an undergraduate degree in a field relevant to public health and at least two year’s full-time related work or volunteer experience.
Flexible deliveryThe school provides a great deal of flexibility for students to tailor their study options according to their needs. Our programs can be undertaken either full-time or part-time. Courses are offered internally on campus with face-to-face teaching, or externally by distance mode using online teaching technologies. All courses offered by the School are available fully online which means the degree can be completed from anywhere in the world.
Extension degreeThe Master of Public Health Extension is designed for students wishing to complete a masters degree that includes a research component. It extends the knowledge and skills acquired in the Masters degree by including a extra term of study, which

One general elective course offered by SPHCM or a project or internship in an Aboriginal Health & Wellbeing topic
allows candidates to undertake an advanced research project. This degree can be completed full-time over 18 months. It could also provide a pathway for students seeking to apply for entry into a PhD program.
Dual degreesStudents have the opportunity to complete two Masters degrees concurrently by combining the Master of Public Health with either the Master of International Public Health, Master of Health Management or Master of Infectious Diseases Intelligence.
Internships and Research ProjectsStudents may complete an Internship or a Research Project as part of their degree. Internships provide the opportunity to gain real-world experience while undertaking a degree. Students also have the opportunity to complete a research project with an academic supervisor.
PhD and research degreesThe School offers excellent research programs to public health and health service researchers aimed at beginner, intermediate and experienced levels. Options are available for research only degrees or combined coursework and research. The SPHCM also offers a unique Professional Doctorate in Applied Public Health which incorporates workplace experience and a thesis in professional practice.
