What do you need to KNOW?

Non-Academic Career Preparation

Understanding the Reality

Proud of current academic / research achievement Superior academic standing higher expectation of jobs Mature personality and strong in your field / major

RPgs

Though there are jobs that require PG qualification, a lot more do not

qualification (PG) may not be advantageous (same rank, same pay) However, job search should also cover openings for UG candidates Be flexible to accept the first job at an entry / trainee level Regard the entry level job an opportunity to use your talent, knowledge and skills to make a contribution and to demonstrate your professionalism and potential Employers will focus on job performance more than education which will become less important over time

Some Reflecting Questions

How employers think today?

Why employers may not be hiring you?

What employers are looking for and why they would hire you?

How you want to come across to employers?

How to show employers who you really are?

and are the type of person they want?

How to reinforce the impression you want to make before, during, and after an interview?

A. Kay (2013)

Slide 29 of 36

Exercise

Think about career and workplace in general: What specific qualities do I want to exhibit? How do I want to be seen? What beliefs and attitudes do I want to convey? What

my motto? How do I want others to feel in my presence? How do I want to approach problems, people, and opportunities?

A. Kay (2013)

Exercise

Think about the actual work you do: What are my top skills (strengths) and talents that I bring to an employer? Things you actually do, enjoy doing them, and do better than anything else

What knowledge will I bring to a job and employer? What you have accumulated throughout the past years that has led to your expertise, and the subjects and theories you know about.

What experience and expertise do I bring to an employer? By industry, job functions or general area of expertise
