Awareness The background The words ‘digital’ and ‘open’ are used interchangeably. So too are ‘access’ and ‘accessibility’. For disabled students the pathway to ‘open’ (in the sense of inclusion) is not necessarily digital, and digital content can in fact be a barrier. Studying online requires digital literacy skills and is also an important way to learn and develop them. A tension arises therefore when adjustments made to deliver inclusion take students offline. Disabled students are vulnerable to getting off to a bad start. There is potential for increasing openness by building in user requirements at the design stage and pre-course induction for students. The workshop Of interest to disabled students, tutors, student support advisers, designers and creators of digital content. Solution-orientated approach, led by disabled student services. Pre-workshop learning activity (no preparation required). Hearing from students whose adjustments include studying off-line. Looking at induction activities building on everyday digital skills. Outcomes for students and practitioners.
