WHAT IS PTSD?

NATURAL DISASTER SERIOUS ACCIDENT

ASSAULT – SEXUAL, PHYSICAL, RAPEWAR, COMBAT, ACT OF TERRIORISM

PTSD is a psychiatric disorder that can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as:

• PTSD is difficult to diagnosis and requires careful evaluation

• Exposure to an upsetting Traumatic Event:• Direct Exposure

• Example:  Witnessing a Murder• Example:  Repeated Exposure to Child Abuse

• Indirect Exposure• Example: Learning about the tragic death of a loved one• Example: Repeated exposure to a child abuse trauma

• Ensuring the CORRECT Diagnosis in a Disability Claim setting

• PTSD not  to be confused with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

PTSD STATISTICS

Ethnicity, nationality, and culture are not unique predispositions to PTSD

PTSD affects approximately 3.5% of U.S adults

Women are 2x more likely to have PTSD than men

Pre‐existing exposure to traumatic events results in higher risk of developing PTSD

Avoiding environments, people, or situations that are a reminder of the Traumatic Event

AROUSAL & REACTIVE SYMPTOMS 

Arousal to an environment, people, or situations

INTRUSIVE THOUGHTS

Uncontrolled thoughts regarding the Traumatic Event (or like event)

NEGATIVE THOUGHTS & FEELINGS

Negative or hurtful thoughts stemming from the Traumatic Event

ASD PTSD

• Occurs in reaction to a traumatic event (like PTSD)

• Symptoms similar to PTSD

• Symptoms occur between 3 days and 1 month after event

.

• Symptoms last greater than a month and can last years

• Symptoms usually occur a month after the event, but can take years to develop
