Applying to State Schools of PAPage 1

• Schools such as Lock Haven, IUP and Clarion are state schools.• Penn State is not a member institution of the

Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). PSU is a state-affiliated school, as is Temple and Pitt.• Tuition is less expensive at PASSHE as compared to

non-discounted PSU tuition.

• Click here for links to all the state schools.• Some state schools may be harder than PSU for

you to be admitted, others may be easier.

• Most schools will allow you to tour, and meet with instructors to help you decide whether the school will meet your needs. Ask about:• Programs of interest• job placement rates for graduates (in their field)• Tutoring services• Housing availability (if important to you)

• SAT’s/ACT’s are usually NOT required for admission to 1 to 2-year programs but are required for 4-year programs

Selecting Colleges to Which You’ll Apply

Go Back

• Visit all schools you’re considering.• Consider applying to just 5 or 6 colleges, since

the average application fee is $50 per application.• Choose at least one “safety” school that is both

academically and financially safe.

• Choose one “reach” school-one you may not fit the mid-range criteria for acceptance but you would really like to go there, and you have a shot.

• Choose at least three “good fits.” Good fit means you fit the mid-range (GPA & SAT/ACT) of applicants usually accepted.

• Apply online if possible.• It’s more efficient, and sometimes cheaper.

• Apply ASAP to get maximum consideration from schools with Rolling Admission (like PSU).

• Make a detailed checklist for each college application to help with organization.

• If you are completely overwhelmed by these questions, please make an appointment with your counselor!

Early Decision vs. Early Action• Early Decision - Students sign a binding

agreement to attend a school that offers them admission. You should only choose this if you definitely want to attend there if accepted. If you don’t you can be held financially responsible.

• Early Action - Students apply early but are not bound to attend the school upon acceptance. Usually criteria for acceptance under “early action” is more competitive than regular admission since schools are forced to decide upon a student early, without any commitment from the student.

• NOTE: Students NOT accepted in the Early Decision or Early Action pools are automatically included

in the pool for regular decision admission and are re-evaluated by those criteria.

Page 21: Post High School Navigator Your Self-Help Guide to State High’s College and Career Information & Resources Enter The.

Rolling Admission vs. Regular Decision• Rolling Admission - Applicants are evaluated

and accepted on a continuous basis until capacity is met, thus advantages exist to those who apply earlier. Note: Penn State has rolling admissions

• Regular Decision - A single deadline exists and all applicants meeting that deadline are placed in a single pool and evaluated. It is not necessary to submit the application any earlier than the published deadline date, as the application is not reviewed until the single deadline date has passed and there is no advantage to submitting early.

Not Sure?

• If you are thinking about college in some form, you need to apply NOW to keep that option open.

• Meanwhile, you should spend time investigating whether a 4-year, 2-year, or 1-year program is right for you depending on your career interests

• If you don’t have a single solid idea of a career direction, ask yourself, how much schooling is required for MOST of the careers that interest me?

• If most require a certificate, associate’s degree, or bachelor’s degree, that should give you a clue on which type of education to pursue.

• If you don’t have a clue about career interests, click here

• If you’re thinking about full-time work right out of high school, think about:

• Will job income be enough to allow me to be independent in the near future? If so, great!

• Will it pay the rent, pay for food, maintain my car, etc.

• If not, does the job/career have potential for promotion or advancement so that I may someday be able to live independently, or even support a family on that salary?

• If not, what further education or trainingwould I need to qualify for a promotion to that level?
