Post Graduate Certificate in Palliative Care Background Information St. Gemma’s Hospice is the largest in Yorkshire providing specialist palliative care to patients with life threatening illnesses and also support for families and carers. Hospices have been beacons of excellence in palliative care since the formation of the modern hospice movement by Dame Cicely Saunders in 1967. The Post Graduate Certificate aims to take this gold standard as the foundation of education to empower clinicians from all health care settings to deliver high quality palliative care in whatever setting they work. Drive for excellence in palliative care Following the roll out of the End of Life Care Strategy by the Department of Health in 2008, there has been a national drive for training in palliative care. The strategic vision of the School of Healthcare is to translate excellence in research and scholarship into an exceptional student experience and make a major impact upon society. The Post Graduate Certificate in Palliative care will be managed through the St Gemma’s Academic Unit of Palliative Care (AUPC). International and national research The programme will draw on international and national research in particular that which is being undertaken by the research team based with the University Of Leeds Faculty Of Medicine and Health and the AUPC at St. Gemma’s Hospice, headed by Professor Mike Bennett. This includes international and national research on cancer pain management and, end of life care issues. The programme also links national and local policy to practice which is critical in supporting leadership skills and awareness of how to change clinical practice to increase quality of care and service delivery. Furthermore it draws on patient and service/user experience through programmes such as the national bereavement survey (Voices), the Leeds Health Needs Assessment and through their direct involvement in the research and teaching based in the hospice. Taught by experts The programme will be taught by lecturers and clinicians who are working in specialist palliative care, utilising up to date evidence and expertise and promoting the value of multi-disciplinary team working.
