2 MANCHESTER 2002 THE XVII COMMONWEALTH GAMES • POST GAMES REPORTVOLUME 5
A1 ForewordThe scope and scale of the 2002 Commonwealth Games has been reflected throughout the Post GamesReport. This final volume emphasises once again the magnitude of the Games, providing detailedand graphical representations of key statistical information. Volume 5 encompasses 11 divisionaland 25 functional areas, commencing with the Top 100 Games statistics and concluding with fullworkforce listings.
The first section is Sport, providing an in-depth analysis into competitor entry numbers and sportpopularity relating to gender, nation and continent variables. The Sport section also includestechnical official data, medical data and a full medal breakdown.
The complexity of the accreditation matrix is summarised in Section C with a breakdown of allaccredited Games attendees, from athletes and team managers to broadcasters and observersfrom future bidding Host Cities.
Key operational areas of the Games included transport, accommodation, security, catering and theathletes’ village. Section D provides information on the scope and scale of each functional area’sGames wide responsibility, from vehicle movements to the allocation of hotel accommodation.
Widely commended by the media, a major factor in the success of the Games was the dedicationand hard work of all those involved. Section E presents the growth of the Organising Committeeand concludes with an-depth look at the number of paid, volunteer and contractual employeeswithin each functional area and at each Games time venue.
Public interest in the Manchester Commonwealth Games was most visibly demonstrated by theoverwhelming demand for tickets. Immense public support and enthusiasm for the Games wasgenerated by a strategic marketing campaign built up over many years. Section G graphicallyportrays the impressive ticket sales, the results of post Games studies showing the impact the Gameshad on the public’s perception of Manchester and the event, together with statistics on the awardingwinning website which received over 200 million hits.
A major logistical challenge included the procurement and delivery of items to their Games timelocation, from the smallest items of stationery to huge temporary structures. Rate cardprocurement formed a major part of this undertaking and Section H lists all rate card items andthose furniture, fittings and equipment with a value less than £500.
With an infrastructure comparable to that of a multi-national company, the Games time technologynetwork serviced 28 venues, each fitted with the latest technology. This section tables allequipment and services provided to each venue, together with an analysis of the support callsreceived by the Technology Help Desk system which operated throughout the event.
An integral part of the celebration of sport and the 2002 Commonwealth Games was the Spirit ofFriendship Festival. This final section provides a comparison between each event strand andincludes the Cultureshock programme statistics.
The appendix to this volume includes a description of all Games coding matrices and presents fulllistings by job title for both the paid and volunteer workforce.

** This figure includes multiple uses of the same room. The maximum number of rooms used on any one night was 3212, showing that each room was utilised on averageby 2 sets of clients.** This figure include includes multiple uses of the same hotel by different buyer groups. Whilst many of the hotels contracted for BBC COMBO and other broadcasterswere exclusively used for their staff, in most other cases each property was used for 3 or 4 different buyer groups to maximise the usage of the best hotels. In total thenumber of different properties used on the project was 63.*** Rate quoted excludes VAT.**** This figure only shows the number of rooms that Sportsworld, in its role as a tour operator contracted from itself in its role as the Official AccommodationManagement Company. None of the other UK tour operators used rooms contracted through Sportsworld on their programmes. To our knowledge, apart from Sportsworld, there were no other international tour operators appointed by CGAs who actually operated any kind of inclusive tour programmes requiring accommodation althoughsome overseas agencies did purchase event tickets only from M2002, mostly for visitors staying with friends and relatives in the Manchester area.

P1.7 Competition Official RolesNote that for Competition Officials the CRS maintains a list per sport which enables each LRS tomaintain and manage it's own list of codes. If the LRS sends to the CRS a new code with a rolethen this new code and role will be appended to the list held by the CRS. The list order will be usedto determine which order the roles are displayed in a list of Officials, eg the Technical Delegatewould normally be listed before a Judge. The Code for the role must be NUMERIC.
