Commander’s MessageCommander’s MessageCommander’s MessageCommander’s Message Steve Weber
I hope this finds you all doing well. Lots of changes in the world make us change the way we do and/or take care of business. The American Legion National has cancelled the National Convention and all national officers, appointed and elected, are to remain in place for another year. We anticipate the same taking place in California. Due to us not being able to get together for meetings in Oxnard either, our board has agreed to stay in place for another year also. I truly appreciate our entire Oxnard Post 48 Family. The officers and members of our Legion, Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion and American Legion Riders are truly “Family”! I thank all the members who have renewed to date for 2020.We are doing better than last year at this time and currently at 94% of our goal. Post 48 is continuing to do all the things we have in the past to keep the 4 Pillars of the American Legion alive. Helping veterans, supporting the community and our active duty military and our Children and Youth programs are still our priorities. Please check your membership card and if does not have 2020 on it renew today. You can send in your renewal or go to the mylegion.org website and renew online. I thank Craig Haskins, Sound Off Editor, only one of his titles, for his continued work getting the information out to all our members through the Sound Off. It takes allot of time out of his busy schedule and we appreciate it. On behalf of the Post 48 Executive Committee, I wish all our Post 48 Mother’s a Very Happy Mother’s Day, Sunday May 10th. Please remember all our active duty mothers in your prayers too. God Bless you all! (Continued on page 3)
Hello ladies! I know this is a very trying time right now and you all are very tired of hearing “hang in there”. Considering our Legion organization has been around 100 years and have faced worst, especially our wars and confrontations and we were there to help our veterans, their families and our community recoup. ”Well we are here now.” I been hearing a lot about the great deeds of kindness you as members are doing during this time of uncertainty for our members, their families, and our community. “Thank you, God bless you and we are very proud you are members of our American Legion Family. Hopefully, we could manage to have a general meeting in May but if not, we will make it a point to keep our members informed on upcoming activities and hopefully make plans for the future. We are definitely going to plan a “Get together party”. If you have any questions ,suggestions or news please give us a call 805 218 1407. Please say a couple of prayers for our members Verna Eason, Joyce Sihler, Mary Brogan, Helen Rodriquez and Teresa Estrella may their health improve soon, and we can see them around Rosemary Weber, Unit 48 President

Commander’s Message (cont.)
This all will pass, and we will be able to meet again. Until that
time, please stay safe and enjoy the time spent with your family and
distancing between friends. We are looking into having a meeting in
May online. I will send out a notification through Lifesize, Zoom or
another program when we have it scheduled. It will be on our
normal 3rd Thursday at 6pm, if possible.
For God and Country, Steve Weber Oxnard Post 48 Commander

2020 was supposed to be a fantastic year and it started out great. So the question is, have you taken advantage of one of the best offers from Uncle Sam yet. I'm referring to veteran access to the base. For some reason, not every local veteran has taken advantage of this benefit. It's relatively easy to do, but being the government, you have to follow the rules. If you haven't registered for base access, here is what you need to do. First of all, be sure you have the newest VA ID Card. You have to catch the VA at the right time, but you should be able to get your card here locally in Oxnard. If you have the card already - you just go to the Pass & ID office at the former Sunkist, now Knott Gate. Early reports said you needed your VA letter (for service connection) but the ID card and your California ID will start the process. They run a background check which takes a short time then once your card is registered, you may enter the base. There have been some days where base access was denied, this was primarily due to the ID Card scanners not functioning, but for the most part you can get on. You cannot bring a guest or dependent unless they have a military ID or VA ID card. Currently the base is on 100% ID checks. With the VA ID and base access you can shop at the Navy Exchange and Commissary. You may also go to the golf course, CBC Bank and MWR services. This is a wonderful new and overdue benefit, which our current administration and DOD leadership has provided for us veterans. Bill Winter Chaplain, Post 48.

Staying Healthy and Safe
In this time of this health emergency, we hope you all are safe and healthy in your homes. No one would have thought we would be in such a situation here in our country, State, City or Community. Please use healthy practices by washing your hands more often than you ever have before. Practice special distancing as to not give the virus even a remote chance of jumping on you from others, if by chance you do go out of the house. As I was typing this, an Emergency alert came across my cell phone and Television from the Ventura County Sheriff, telling us to shelter in our homes and to not go out unless absolutely necessary. Then my sister texted saying you should not let anyone into your home, except for emergencies. And you should not be meeting anyone outdoors, even with social distancing.
