The Business of Law and the Profession of Law
Seminar organised by the UIA National Committee for Portugal and the UIA The Future of the Lawyer Commission,
in association with the Ordem dos Advogados Portugueses and The Oporto Chamber of Commerce
PortoPORTUGAL
Friday, April 15 & Saturday, April 16, 2011
During the past decade, the nature of the legal professionhas been radically changed by external factors such astechnology and globalisation.
The practice of law, which has historically been considereda “profession”, now is more like a “business”.
At the same time, what differentiates law from most otherbusinesses is the fact that alongside the commercial aspects,it also concerns procedural, regulatory, statutory andpolitical issues. In addition, our services are governed bylong established moral and ethical standards.
The UIA, founded in 1927, is an organisation uniquelypositioned to promote the profession and business of law and todevelop legal knowledge on an international level.
In Porto, during six roundtables open to debate with all theseminar participants, we will discuss the ways in which law hasbecome more of a business and less of a profession by focusingon: challenges to the profession’s core values (independence, secrecy, education, limited admission), the impact of technologyon the delivery of legal services and the lives of lawyers, howaccess to the internet affects law firms, new areas of practice forlawyers, and the role the professional associations can play inaddressing the changes, namely those imposed by internationalorganisations such as the WTO.
We expect to welcome you to Porto, homeland to the genuineand best Vintage Port wine (the one that does not travel).
