WELCOME

Message from the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Portsmouth

Welcome to the University of Portsmouth.

I am very pleased that we have established ICP as an associate college of the University, a partnership that allows students to begin their pathway at ICP and study on the University campus. This extends the reach of the University both globally and academically, and allows us to offer Portsmouth degrees to many aspiring students from overseas who may not otherwise be ready to move directly into undergraduate or postgraduate studies.

I wish you every success in your ICP studies and your exciting new life in Portsmouth.

I look forward to hearing of your progress through one of our degrees and eventually I hope to celebrate your academic achievements at our graduation ceremony.

Professor Graham GalbraithVice-Chancellor University of Portsmouth

Message from the College Director/Principal of ICP

I am delighted that you are considering a university education in the UK. ICP provides a fantastic range of pathways into one of the country’s top modern universities. We have welcomed talented and ambitious students from around the world to the college since 2009.

Since our opening in 2009, ICP has established an impressive reputation in the pathway sector as a high quality and achievement orientated institution. Our exemplary progression rates of over 96% are symbolic of the quality of the teaching and academic support the College provides; and through the years over 1700 ICP students have successfully progressed to University of Portsmouth degree programmes. Indeed, in 2016 210 former ICP students graduated from the University of Portsmouth, of whom over 90% achieved a second class honours degree or better.

Many of these graduates have since used the knowledge and skills they acquired in Portsmouth to move onto postgraduate study or secure jobs in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.

At ICP we are entirely focused on you and providing you with an unforgettable student experience. We aim to provide you with the teaching and support that will enable you to achieve your aspirations and dreams.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to ICP and one of the most exciting stages of your life.

YOUR LIFE IN PORTSMOUTH: STUDY ON THE GLORIOUS SOUTH  COAST OF ENGLAND

Portsmouth is a lively and cosmopolitan city on the south coast of England and only 90 minutes from central London. It is a great place to live, work and study. The city is compact — everything you could possibly need is within easy reach.

LOCATION

Portsmouth is the UK’s only island city and is within easy reach of central London. Situated on the south coast, Portsmouth has much lower rainfall than the national average, and is one of the sunniest cities in the UK.

A CITY RICH IN HISTORY

Home to the Royal Navy, Portsmouth is proud of its maritime heritage. The Historic Dockyard houses some of the world’s most famous warships, including Nelson’s HMS Victory and King Henry VIII’s Mary Rose which is housed in a purpose–built, award winning museum.

GETTING AROUND

The city is compact and flat — perfect for cycling — and everything is close by so it is easy to get around. This can significantly reduce your travel expenses, plus as an ICP student your campus card will give you access to a free bus service provided by the University of Portsmouth.

If you wish to travel further afield for your adventures, Portsmouth is one of the best connected ports in the UK. It has regular passenger ferries to the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands and continental Europe, as well as an airport just 20 miles from the city. In addition to being within easy reach of London, Portsmouth also sits close to the picturesque countryside of southern England, with rolling green hills and typical English woodland.

COST OF LIVING

Portsmouth is the most affordable city for student living in the UK (NatWest Student Living Index 2016). Aside from your tuition costs, you will need to budget for a minimum of £9,135 per year to cover your living expenses while studying in the UK.

SHOPPING AND ENTERTAINMENT

If you like shopping, you’ll love Portsmouth. The city boasts three main shopping areas, including the £200 million waterside complex at Gunwharf

Quays, home to over 80 designer outlets, 30 restaurants and bars, a multi–screen cinema, and a bowling complex. Here you can visit the impressive Emirates Spinnaker Tower — the UK’s tallest accessible structure outside London — which offers stunning views over the city and beyond.

Other events include the Portsmouth International Kite Festival in August and the Victorian Festival of Christmas, held every November. However, the highlight for many students comes in the summer when the music festival season begins. The Victorious Festival takes place in the city in August, but you can catch some of the world’s top artists and DJs at the Isle of Wight Festival in June or at Bestival in September. Recent Bestival headliners have included Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Dizzee Rascal, Fatboy Slim, Pendulum and Snoop Dogg.

SPORT

Sport is central to life in Portsmouth and has put the city on the map. The city hosts world-class sailing events and boasts its own football team — Portsmouth FC — who were the proud winners of the world-famous FA Cup in 2008. The University of Portsmouth also offers excellent sports facilities; its Athletic Union has over 40 different clubs that ICP students can join, with everything from football, tennis and cricket to skydiving, skiing and sailing.
