Team HistoryLike the red yarn that holds the rawhide strips together on a baseball, the lore and tradition of the National Pastime knits the sport firmly into the fabric of American culture and the consciousness of American small towns.

The Stockton Ports enter into their 58th season in 2009, with a 4,339-3,873 overall record, 11 league titles, and their own unique lore and traditions knitting them into Minor League Baseball and Californian history.

Baseball lore credits Abner Doubleday, an impor-tant Union general who played a pivotal role at the Battle of Gettysburg, with inventing baseball in a cow pasture in Cooperstown, N.Y. in 1839.

Baseball lore also credits a baseball team based in Stockton, Calif. with being the inspiration for Ernest Lawrence Thayer’s famous “Casey at the Bat” poem.

Thayer wrote the fictional poem in 1888, as legend goes, after seeing the Stockton club compete. At that time, Stockton played at Banner Island Park near a riverfront area called Mudville.

Just as the Mills Commission Report elevated Cooperstown into baseball prominence, a short poem by Thayer placed Stockton indelibly on the baseball map.

That 1888 Stockton team won the California League pennant, finishing the season with a 41-24 record. In the early 1900s, Stockton boasted a team in the California League. While the team underwent several name changes (Poppies from 1903-05, Millers from 1906-08, Tigers in 1909 and Boosters in 1910), the team found plenty of success. Stockton won pennants each season from 1903 to 1908. (The 1908 team is pictured below.)

In 1913, the California League reemerged and Stockton captured another title. In 1915, the League folded.

Baseball in Stockton did not reappear until a new California League, a Class C league, was founded in 1941 by Bill Schroeder.

The Stockton Fliers became a charter member, along with franchises in Anaheim, Bakersfield, Fresno, Merced, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Santa Barbara.

Because of the outbreak of World War II, Stock-ton did not field a team in 1942, and the League suspended play because of the War. In 1946, the League resumed normal operations, with the Stockton Ports as a member.

The club was named the Ports because Stockton is the state’s only inland port. The Ports called Oak Park Field home, but renamed the stadium Billy Hebert Field in 1950, in honor of a local man who became the first player in organized baseball who was killed in action during World War II.

Hebert actually played for Merced in 1941 before enlisting in the Navy. He was wounded at Guadal-canal in October 1942.

In 1946, the Ports finished first in the California League with a 78-52 record and their first of 11 California League titles. (The 1946 club is pictured above.)

In 1947, the Ports captured their second cham-pionship, as one of two teams in the League that were not affiliated or owned by a major league team. The Ports did have a limited agreement with the Oakland club in the Pacific Coast League.

To capture the title, the Ports went on a 26-game

winning streak—a streak that remains a League record and is the second longest winning streak in baseball history. The Ports, led by manager Johnny Babich, finished the season with a 95-45 record, 16 full games ahead of San Jose and Visalia.

The back-to-back championships makes the Ports one of four teams to win consecutive titles.

Baseball historians Bill Weiss and Marshall Wright ranked the 1947 Ports among the top 100 greatest Minor League Baseball teams, placing them at No. 98.

In 1947, the League expanded to include teams in San Jose and Ventura. Today, there are 10 teams in the California League, with five in both the North-ern and Southern Divisions.

The Northern Division is made up of the Bakers-field Blaze, Modesto Nuts, San Jose Giants, Stock-ton Ports and Visalia Rawhide.

The Southern Division is composed of the High Desert Mavericks, Inland Empire 66ers, Lake Elsinore Storm, Lancaster JetHawks and Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

In addition to having the most titles by any active League team (11), the Ports are tied with the Fresno Cardinals/Giants for the most franchise titles in League history.

Stockton was also the fastest team in League history to reach the 4,000 win plateau, a feat they accomplished in 2004.

Since joining the California League in 1941, the Ports remained with the League until 1972, and returned in 1978.

During the 1980s and into the 1990s, the Ports

were one of the nation’s winningest Minor League Baseball teams, totaling 977 wins through the 1991 season.

The Ports also had the best win-loss percentage in all of Minor League Baseball for the 1980s.

After the 1999 season, the team renamed them-selves the Mudville Nine, as a salute to Thayer’s poem and their own roots.

Following the 2001 season, the Nine reverted back to the name Ports and continued to find plenty of success in the California League.

In 2002, the Ports were purchased by 7th Inning Stretch, LLC, a baseball ownership group founded by Tom Volpe.

In 2005, the Ports moved from Billy Hebert Field into their spacious new home at Banner Island Ballpark, which is located right along the Delta Channel. The Ports won their first championship since moving to the new stadium in 2008, under the leadership of manager Darren Bush. It was their 11th franchise record, a California League record. (The 2008 team is pictured below.)

The Ports have won championships in 1946, 1947, 1963, 1965, 1969, 1980, 1986, 1990, 1992, 2002, and 2008. The Ports look to continue their win-ning ways in future seasons.

Bill Weiss: All-Time Ports TeamIn 1997, California League historian Bill Weiss selected his Stockton Ports All-Time Team. Weiss said there were several tough decisions to be made regarding the All-Time Team, and that several other quality play-ers and coaches all deserved serious consideration. Below is his 1997 Stockton Ports All-Time Team and his report, just as he wrote it. Players in bold played in the Major Leagues.

Mike Epstein, 1B. 1965--Hit .338 with 30 HR, 100 RBI in 124 games. Led League in HR, RBI and was named League MVP. Team co-record holder in HR. Only Port to lead the league in homers since Vince DiMaggio in 1948.

Eddie Samcoff, 2B. 1946-47--Hit .303 in 1946 and .315 in 1947. Led league second baseman in fielding, named to League All-Star team both years and was the League MVP in 1947.

Harry Clements, 3B. 1947-54--Hit .305 in 1,024 games with 624 RBI for the Ports. Holds league records for third base-man for highest fielding percentage (.970) and most assists (360) in a season. For perspective, .970 is the career average for Brooks Robinson, possibly the best fielding third baseman in American League history. Clements led third baseman in fielding in 1947, 1949, 1951, 1952 and 1953. He was a League All-Star in 1947, 1949, 1951 and 1952. He managed the Ports from 1950-1952.

Pumpsie Green, SS. 1955--Hit .319 in 144 games, named League All-Star and voted League’s MVP.

Chuck Hinton, OF. 1960--Hit .369 with 20 HR, 88 RBI in 101 games. Led league in batting, and named to League All-Star team.

Don Baylor, OF. 1968--Hit .369 with 7 HR, 40 RBI in 68 games. Named to League All-Star team although playing only half the season.

Darryl Hamilton, OF. 1987--Hit .328 with 8 HR, 61 RBI in 125 games. Named to League All-Star team, and fielded .996 with only 1 error in 230 chances. Probably the Ports best fielding outfielder of all time.

Lilio Marcucci, C. 1947-48--Hit .334 with 16 HR, 87 RBI in 107 games and named to League All-Star team.

Steve Lake, C. 1979--Hit .283 with 6 HR, 40 RBI in 94 games. One of best fielding catchers in league history.

Pitchers listed in chronological order

Don Belton, LHP. 1946-47--Named League All-Star and lead league in wins both years. In 1946, he was 23-9 with a 2.89 ERA and in 1947 was 21-6 with a 3.79 ERA. Was second in league in ERA in 1946, and eighth in 1947.

Bob Thorpe, RHP. 1953-54--In 1954, had a 28-4 record with a 2.28 ERA and led the league in Wins, ERA, and named League All-Star and League MVP. Set league records for most IP (300.1), complete games (32) and consecutive complete games (30), and tied the record for most wins in 1954. Pitched in two games for the Chicago Cubs in 1955, then was op-tioned to Des Moines. Pitched in the PCL in 1956-57, and hurt his arm. He was out of the game in 1958 and had an unsuc-cessful comeback in 1959. Died tragically on March 17, 1960 at the age of 25 when he was electrocuted while working on a power line for a San Diego utilities company.

Charlie Beamon, RHP. 1955--Finished with a 16-0 record and a 1.36 ERA, and was a League All-Star. Holds league records for most consecutive wins and highest win-loss percentage. ERA was a league record until Ports Bill Wegman totalled a 1.30 ERA in 1983. Completed 15 of 16 starts. Streak ended when he was recalled by Oakland (PCL).

Alvin Spearman, RHP. 1956-58--In 1956, he finished 18-3 with a 2.62 ERA and led league in ERA and percentage (.857), and tied league record of 16 consecutive wins. Was 14-4 with a 2.73 ERA in 1957, and 20-9 with a 2.60 ERA in 1958. Led league in ERA in 1958. League All-Star in 1956 and 1958.

Ed Barnowski, RHP. 1964--Totaled a 13-8 record with a 1.95 ERA, led league in ERA and named to League All-Star team. Led league in SO with 321 (second highest total in League history) in 222 IP. Set league record for most SO in two con-secutive games (38), with 20 in his first game and 18 in the next. Pitched two no-hitters, only pitcher in league history with two no-hit games in one season.

Bill Kirkpatrick, RHP. 1969--Ended season with a 16-6 record, and a 1.96 ERA with 178 SO, 48 BB in 211 IP. Led league in ERA, named to League All-Star team. Pitched 7 shutouts, second highest total in league history.

Bill Weiss: All-Time Ports TeamBill Wegman, RHP. 1983--Finished with a 16-5 record and a 1.30 ERA with 135 SO, 45 BB in 187 IP. Named to League All-Star team and holds league record for lowest ERA.

Doug Webb, RHP. 1995--Finished the season 0-0 with a 1.70 ERA and 22 saves. Was named to League All-Star team despite mid-season promotion to El Paso. Was on his way to league saves record when promoted.

Johnny Babich, Manager--Led 1947 team to league title with 95-45 record, 16 games ahead of second-place San Jose and Visalia. Then Ports won 7 straight in the playoff. Led Ports to 26 consecutive wins, league record and fourth highest consecutive-wins total in baseball history.

There were a lot of tough decisions on who to leave off the team. Probably hardest to pick just one manager. Had to ignore Roy Partee (1955-56), Harry Dunlop (1963-64), Harry Malmberg (1965-67), native son Bill Werle (1969-70), Tony Muser (1980), Dave Machemer (1986-87), Chris Bando (1990-91) and Tim Ireland (1992-94), all of whom won championships.

Difficult to limit starting pitchers to only six. Ports have had so many outstanding pitchers going back to 23-game winner Honolulu Bill Whaley in the league’s first season, 1941. Others were Lloyd Hittle, Tony Freitas, Bud Guldborg, Bob Olson, Wally Bunker, Dave Lapoint, Jaime Cocanower and Jeff Parrett. At other positions, John Jaha, Bill Schroeder, Paul Blair, Glenn Braggs, Roger Freed, Dave Mann, Don Moitoza, Mike Felder and Gary Sheffield all deserved serious consideration.
