Welcome

Nikki B BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

We are delighted to announce that Dr Lara Kriek has joined the team. Lara will be working at Portmore on Fridays and Saturday’s, which has allowed us to extend our opening times so that we can offer weekend appointments to patients who have busy weekday working schedules.

Lara has a passion for further education and continually updating her clinical knowledge, practical dental skills and staying current with academic research in her fields of interest. This enables her to ensure patients obtain the very best and most modern dental treatments available.

We are excited to offer a new facial aesthetic treatment at Portmore using the latest PRGF (Endoret®) technology. This fantastic treatment offers facial rejuvenation by using your own cells to stimulate collagen growth, which in turn causes regeneration of facial tissue. Read more on page 6.

Building work is due to start in our hygiene bay in December. As you may know, they hygiene bay is currently 3 separate, open-plan bays – the team have decided that it would be much better use of space to convert the bays into 2 ‘state of the art’ dental surgeries, this new facility will allow us to grow the practice, again offering a better service and extended hours to our patients.

We are delighted to announce that Portmore has been nominated as ‘Best Team’ and in turn shortlisted for national awards at Private Dentistry, and Dentistry magazine. The team will be attending the national awards ceremonies & gala dinners in Leicester and London later in year to see if we are winners! Watch this space………

HYGIENESpaSTOPTOBER!

As it is October the Stoptober campaign is in full swing. It is well known and advertised the dangers and risks smoking poses to our health, including secondary smoking. It is also well known that it is not an easy habit to stop! Smoking can cause many health implications for example, lung cancer, but many do not realise that it can cause serious oral health issues.

Smoking reduces saliva and therefore causes a dry mouth. Saliva is a very important buffer which helps maintain oral health; with a reduced salivary flow the teeth are much more susceptible to things like decay.Smoking also reduces bleeding, this can mask one of the main symptoms of gum disease; without these symptoms many are unaware and do not seek treatment therefore

resulting in more advanced gum disease.

One of the main and most dangerous oral health implications that smoking can lead to is Oral cancer. Oral Cancer spreads very quickly and needs to be treated as soon as possible. With all these things in mind it is highly recommended that as a smoker you see a dental professional more regularly.

Here at Portmore we want to help our patients, whether it be choosing the correct toothbrush or giving up smoking. We have smoking cessation advice available and can advise on the options available, you are not alone.

Lets make Stoptober your time to stop!

TEAM Q&A

Q1:

What is your role at

Portmore, what do you do

on a day to day basis?

NAME:

ROLE:

N01932 855 011 [email protected] wportmoredental.co.uk 5

I am a Dental Hygienist at Portmore. My role is very varied but probably most of my day consists of carrying out routine, maintenance hygiene appointments. This includes scaling- the removal of hard tarter (calculus) and polishing to remove surface stain with discussion on how best to fit effective tooth brushing, flossing, tepes into an already busy life. Diet and smoking are great discussions to have with youngsters going off to University or starting out in work. My role obviously includes being part of Portmore team, communicating and helping to give the best we can to our patients. Advanced gum disease treatments, fissure sealants, tooth whitening, diamond shine, airflow are just some of the other treatments I carry out.

Q2:What is your favourite aspect of your role? Though my role may seem repetitive it isn't and that's what I love. Every day is varied as every patient is unique in their treatment and advise. I really enjoy getting to know each of my patients and as one of the longest serving staff member many of my patients are like friends. My other favourite aspect is that I work here on a Monday, I couldn't think of a better place to be for a Monday with the great team we have.

Q3:If I wasn’t working at Portmore I would be...?If I wasn't working at Portmore I would be having a midlife crisis travelling the world. I would enjoy a mixture of helping charities and of course some luxury venues.

NAME: Sue AubreyROLE: Hygienist

Q6:What I will be doing in 2015...At Portmore I'm looking forward to attending the Dentistry Awards in Leicester where we have been shortlisted. Also in December some of our Hygiene bays are having a makeover. I'm excited to return in the New Year to work in my new room.At home, dare I say it but I'll start to think about Christmas and holidays.

Q4:My guilty pleasure is...oast and marmite with a cup of English tea when I'm fed up.Shoes, handbags, well anything I can wear. Of course they're not new, I've had them all a long time!

Q5:Outside of work I love...Outside of work I love doing so much. My favourite is spending time with my husband, children and friends. Eating out at all types of restaurants or experimenting with new recipes to share with them along with a glass or two.Music is another passion. At the moment I'm enjoying jazz at Ronnie Scott's and a lovely local Dorking club. The main sport I love to watch is rugby, though that may change after the World cup.I love my Pilates classes, I do other exercise but not sure I love it.

We are delighted at Portmore to announce that we are now offering ‘Organic Facelifts’ at the practice. This revolutionary technology, using PRGF (Endoret) means that we can now provide facial rejuvenation that not only gives superb results but is totally natural and very very safe.

What is PRGF?PRGF stands for Plasma Rich Growth Factor.  They are natural proteins in platelets found in blood.  The therapeu-tic application of growth factors is that it stimulates and accelerates the processes of tissue repair, healing and regeneration.

What is the PRGF facelift procedure like?PRGF Facelift is an organic facelift procedure, whereby stem cell science is used to encourage your body to produce more collagen to create the appearance of younger skin. The PRGF Facelift works with your own blood plasma as our Clinicians extract your blood to begin the anti-wrinkle treatment.

The PGRF Facelift procedure is a 3 -step process, meaning that ideally you need 3 treat-ments for optimum results. However, those patients wanting a simple ‘refresh’ should also see a result after 1 procedure.  Treatment times can vary but most patients are in and out of the practice within a couple of hours.

How does it work?During the treatment a sample of blood is taken from your arm and then placed in a centrifuge, allowing the platelets to separate. The platelet rich growth factor is then extracted into a syringe to prepare a platelet-rich gel.  This is then administered on to the face and neck using a technique called ‘Mesotherapy’.

How many treatments are required?Treatment with microinjections of PRGF®-Endoret® is recom-mended as a preventative level starting from age of 35 to slow the preventative

level starting from age of 35 to slow the ageing process, or from 45 on, with regenerative and corrective purposes.

The effects of PRGF®-Endoret® microinjections are progressive and begin to be evident after 24 hours from the first application, with an increase in the smoothness and brightness of skin with each new session. It is recommended to receive three sessions in the first three months. Subsequently, the treatment is personalised, with usual maintenance being one to three sessions per year.

How is the PRGF Facelift different from other similar facelifts? It is different from cosmetic injectables like in that it does not only add volume, but also, stimulates your own collagen production and cell migration to eliminate lines and wrinkles. The results are subtle, natural and last up to two years.

Also unlike other such systems the PRGF-Endoret is capable of extracting the white blood cells during centrifugal process hence causing virtually no or minimal inflammation.

Am I Suitable? Most people are. Some conditions that may make it more difficult or that mean we can’t use it are:• If you are difficult to take blood from! This may sound obvious but we find that patients generally know this about themselves. If you have a history of nurses struggling to get blood and needing to try multiple veins then you may not be a prime candidate for a vampire facelift.• If you are on an anti-clotting medication such as Warfarin – we need to know! This is not a complete contra-indication but is something we would discuss with you.• If you have a blood disease that means your blood doesn’t clot properly.• If you are suffering from an active infection.

Can the PRGF Facelift be combined with Fillers?Yes, and we often recommend patients combine the PRGF Facelift with hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane for deep lines. PRGF’s attach to filler to stimulate collagen production, providing better volume results. PRGFs also make traditional fillers last longer, giving you younger skin.

Benefits of PRGF Endoret• Production of own Hyaluronic Acid.• Increased firmness of skin due to increase in secretion of collagen and elastin.• Hydration PRGF®-Endoret® ensures a high level of skin hydration compared to levels obtained with other cosmetic treatments as it has been proven in clinical trials.• Wrinkle reduction similar to treatment with fillers.• Increased Skin Luminosity.

Other ApplicationsAdvanced PRGF technology is really very versatile and can be used for other areas of facial aesthetics, medicine and dentistry as follows:• Reducing wrinkles on the back of the hand• Healing of venous ulcers• Consolidation of bone fractures and grafts• Fixation of prostheses in the hip, knee, etc• Oral implantology• Injuries and breakages of ligaments, muscles and tendons• Treatment of skin burns, injuries and lesions

What does the treatment Cost?£600 per session£1600 for 3 sessions

TOOTHWHITENING

1. What types of tooth whitening can I get at Portmore? We offer 2 tooth whitening treatments.

Home Whitening. This will brighten your teeth over a 10 to 14 day period. Custom bleaching trays need to be made and fitted. At the first appointment impressions are taken for the trays. The trays are fitted at a subsequent appointment . Full instructions on how to load the trays and what to expect and the do's and dont's during the whitening period will be given. Starting shade photographs are usually taken to monitor progress.

A follow up appointment is usually made to see how you have got on.A follow up appointment is usually made to see how you have got on.

Zoom Whitening. This is an in-surgery procedure carried out by our therapists and hygienists and followed by home whitening. It involves a 90 minute appointment to take impressions for home trays and plus three 15 minute applications of light activated hydrogen peroxide.Your teeth will receive a thorough clean ,followed by application of protective dam to your gums and then 3 or 4 applications of 6 per cent hydrogen peroxide, followed by activation with a blue light. This helps to ensure a rapid but gentle brightening. Start and finish photographs will be taken.Your home trays will be fitted the next day ideally so that

the brightening process can be continued and maintained.

2. What is the difference between the kits available in chemists and the treatment you provide? The main difference between kits available in chemists and the treatments that we provide is that only dentists can prescribe whitening procedures using 6 per cent hydrogen peroxide. Products from the chemist can only have 0.1 per cent hydrogen peroxide and are therefore likely to much less effective. The delivery systems are not custom made and often difficult to use.

3. My local beauty salon offers tooth whitening and its much cheaper, why is this?It is illegal for non dental professionals to prescribe and deliver tooth whitening systems , as this is considered to be practising dentistry. So local beauticians are breaking the law if they are providing tooth whitening , unless of course they have an in house dentist. In addition to this, they are not trained to use the materials correctly, nor do they have in depth product knowledge, which

So local beauticians are breaking the law if they are providing tooth whitening , unless of course they have an in house dentist. In addition to this, they are not trained to use the materials correctly, nor do they have in depth product knowledge, which

means that they have no understanding of the materials they are using which could have very dangerous side effects if used incorrectly.

4. How do I know if I am suitable for tooth whitening? Most patients teeth could be made brighter using tooth whitening procedures. Our teeth become darker with age due to thinning of the outside layer of enamel and thickening of the inside yellower layer of dentine in response to this enamel loss. We also acquire extrinsic stain from food, drink and smoking . So whitening works for most natural teeth but it will not change fillings or crowns so a careful assessment needs to made before starting this to highlight any potential problems .Some patients experience sensitivity whilst whitening but this always goes away when the whitening has been completed. There are mouthwashes and mousses to reduce sensitivity problems. If you are considering whitening and have any concerns then please book an appointment with Lorraine ,our treatment coordinator ,for a complimentary consultation.

5. How long do the effects last and how long does it take? Most whitening procedures produce a change that last 5 years particularly if combined with regular hygiene visits. Home bleaching involves 2 twenty minute

home sessions for about 10/14 days and Zoom whitening produces an instant change following the 90 minute procedure plus further improvement with home trays over 3/4 days.

6. My previous dentist advised that whitening may damage my

natural teeth, is this true?Tooth whitening procedures

that we prescribe do no harm to teeth. A course of tooth whitening is probably equivalent to drinking 2 cans of Coke-Cola.

7. I don’t want bright, white teeth, how do you

make sure they look natural?

Home whitening would be perfect for you because the change is gradual

and you can stop when you have achieved the change you are happy with.

8. Will my teeth be sensitive?Tooth whitening can cause temporary sensitivity. As part of our pre treatment assessment we would be able to advise you whether you may be prone to sensitivity during the whitening period. There are good ways to lessen sensitivity during whitening and in most cases to eliminate it.
