Located in the Big Bend National Park, the Rang-er Station sits nestled in the edge of a cliff 150 feet above ground. The site provides a work-space and temporary living conditions for vis-iting rangers, located in the core of the project, with two very long towers at either end to sup-port observation decks. The extreme heights of the observation decks enable the rangers dra-matically different views in order for them to ob-serve birds in the sky as well as different land animal species on the ground below. In addition to structure, solar shading was a driving factor of the project considering the extreme condi-tions of the sun at Big Bend.

Located in Houston’s Highland Village, the Tes-la Showroom is a multi-purpose commercial building centered around the showcase of new Tesla car models. The building has a long, nar-row shape where one Tesla model can sit in the lobby, visible from every floor. Programatically, the first floor showcases the Tesla and contains Tesla business and consultant offices. The sec-ond floor holds a bookstore and reading alove, while the third and top-most floor holds a cafe with indoor-outdoor seating.

Located in Houston’s Spott’s Park, the Commu-nity Center includes a theater, a cafe, rooms for community meetings, an outdoor perfor-mance space, and a practice performance room. Gently nestled within the side of a hill, the Community Center evokes the feeling of a pier or a bridge; a bridge into the sky.

The purpose of the energy corridor education center is to educate visitors about renewable energy sources and the present and future of every day energy use by engaging with present conditions of global energy productions and also its possible futures.Shift : Energy will be an educational facility in what it teaches, but more importantly it will also be an educa-tional facility in itself, displaying sustainable options through its own building elements.

Shift: Energy’s main energy saving elements are its water retention pond, panelized canopy roof, geother-mal wells, and use of algae biofuel and biomass en-ergy. Colorful “bands” in the project symbolize these elements, and represent hydro energy, solar energy, and bio energy. Rain water drains from the roof into the retenion pond, and the canopy roof’s pannels are shifted to let more light into the programs that want more light, and shade the programs that do not re-quire as much light. Hopefully, Shift: Energy can be a stepping stone for a better self- sustaining future.
