the specifi cations were to build a piece of furniture capable of being carried in a traveling suitcase. the furniture piece needed to be constructed out of one 4’X8’ sheet of wood and was required to be hardware free. All of the joints found in this coffee table are mortise and tenon. made out of birch, the table was then stained for an added protective fi nish.

THEATREINSTALLATION

rendering of installation 2 representing monument 2

Page 17: Portfolio-UTSOA-M.Arch.

this project was a study of time-space. After traveling around the cities of Bryan-College Station, the assignment was to pin point 5 local “monuments” and study their relation to their surroundings and their interaction with the land. Three of those 5 monuments would become the inspiration behind our design for an installation at a local abandoned theatre. the story of our journey was to be made visible through our installation as to immerse our viewer and invite them into the journey.

by exploring place-defi ning characteristics and

corresponding physical patterns of contemporary Italian design,

it is the purpose of this project to design spaces that revitalize the piazza, and create a more

pedestrian-friendly place. Designs will be respectful of

existing conditions and become an interplay between the urban

context and the program for interventions of Piazza Collegio.

as part of a design-build studio, the project called for the design of a tiny

house that had the potential to be mobile. this project was executed in

groups of 3. our design, BigTiny, is a pull-out house designed to maximize its living

areas and enhance the quality of the spaces .The design in tent is to have a

small , compactible house but not a small space. through its materiality, BigTiny

provides a connection to nature and is a play on light vs. heavy.

material choice was

an important part of the

design process. we aimed to highlight the

personality of each module

through our choice of material.

wrapped in corrugated metal, module 1 is an anchor to module 2 and the site itself. module 1 houses the elemental living components. the metal represents strength and stability. its light weight is a benefit given that the house needs to be mobile.

providing translucency and views onto nature, we chose to use poly carbonate panels in module 2 .These panels are not only light weight for mobility but are durable and a good source of insulation.

for warmth and a connection to nature, module 2 is wrapped in wood paneling. The striated wood siding provides sunlight protection and forms whimsical light and shadow patterns creating an ambience.

after a jury selected the winning design, as a studio we began the

construction of the house. This project took place at the Texas

A&M Architecture Ranch and ran from February to June. The house was built on a system of

wooden stilts in order to fascilitate its move later. The finished project currently remains on Texas A&M’s

Architecture Ranch grounds.

The exhibition shows that architectural excellence is found

not only in the work of internationally renowned Spanish

maestros, but also in the unknown work carried out in the studios of

a new generation of professionals, which ensures a

promising future for Spanish architecture. The works were selected by means of a public

competition open to all young Spanis architects. The more than

700 projects underwent an individual selection process by the

members of an international jury composed of prestigious architects such as Alberto Campo Baeza and

Manuel Blanco and the architecture critics Kenneth

Frampton and Juhnani Pallasma.

Miguel Roldán, Texas A&M adjunct professor of architecture, will provide the opening lecture for the exhibition. Miguel is the director of the Barcelona Architecture Center (home to Texas A&M's College of Architecture study abroad program in Spain), and a founding principal of R+B Architects in Barcelona.

An exhibit of interior designs by Roldán and his R+B partner Mercé Berengué was recently exhibited at the Catalunya College of Architects headquarters in Barcelona. R+B’s recent project Placa Europa Tower has received numerous awards, including the Premio de Arquitectura Española 2011.
