Opgave: Verbeteren van de verblijfskwaliteit.Locatie: Haarlemmerplein

Fascination, while working on models the left-overs fascinated me.

Assignment:To design a village (free-state) for about 100 inhabitants.Location: Area between Veendam en Stadskanaal
Characteristics of landscape:A striking observation of the current landscape are the ditches and the strong orientation of them. If one looks at the history, these ditches are use to dig out the peat. The ditches are artifi cial and made with calculated precision. Before the installation of the ditches the landscape was rough and the ditches were implanted to make the landscape effi cient.
Current development:If one looks at the old maps it is clear that the ditches were is a higher quantity than nowadays. It is also striking how many and how small the individual lots were. Through time the enlargement of the agriculture swallowed the different lots in the direction of the ditches (from East to West) and now this enlargement is occurring in the other direction (from North to South) and is slowly swallowing the ditches. The artifi cial landscape, which is a striking aspect of the history and the current landscape is disappearing.
Location and act of village:To preserve a piece of the current, and former, landscape the new village will capture a number of ditches, so they cannot be swallowed by the occurring enlargement of the agriculture.Because preserving the landscape is in fact the main goal of the village, it will be made part of the landscape. By lifting the landscape, space for housing or other facilities will come into existing, while the landscape will continue. By shifting thehouses or hills they will get openings for natural daylight. The ’houses’ will arise in the same orientation of the ditches, around the ditches a small centre of collective facilities will be located. The village will be developed in a line (the shortest way between the ditches) and will be enclosed byagricultural fi elds which belong to the inhabitants of the villages.
P3a The Living landscape
6.0
Target group/inhabitants:The new village will be a freestate. If one looks at the current freestates they are inhabited by people whom are looking for freedom which they cannot fi nd in the current society. They try to live in a manner without rules made up by others andoften like to build and extend their own houses. Because they group up they live in a communal way and share facilities and all contribute to their general foodsupply.
Construction of landscape:To make the ‘houses’ in a unifi ed manner, a general construction principal will be introduced. This construction is based on a truss which is made by small pieces of wood, preferably garbage or leftovers. Between two trusses beams will beplaced, so the landscape can continue over the roofs of the houses. Because it concerns a unifi ed construction people can produce them in series and are easily duplicated.

Egelantiersgracht:

Weesperzijde 99a 2011
8.0Locatie: Weesperzijde 99, voormalige hoofdkantoor brandweerDoelgroep: Senioren vanaf ongeveer 60 a 65.Wensen: Veel buitenruimte, gelijk vloers.

410.0Assignment:
To design a public building for the EYOF (European Youth Olympic Festival).Number of countries: 35Duration: 3 daysSports: Sailing, rowing and windsurfi ngLocation: Bethune polder
Dutch landscape; land vs water:Holland has a tradition to make land out ofwater. This results in a constant fi ght against water and it requires a lot of effort to maintain these, self-made, landscapes. Through the centuries we changed the landscape so drastically that in fact most of it is artifi cial. The Bethunepolder (project area) is a landscape where upcoming (ground)water comes so fast (1000 m3/s) that it is barely able to keep it dry. The appearance of the landscape constantly fl uctuates between land and water. Is the land or the bottom of a lake? In a kind of way it is not real land and not real water. This thin line between water and land makes the landscape more extreme than general. The facilities for this event will be build somewhere in the polder. The focus lies to make a building fi t for the EYOF, but also fi t for a ‘second’ live which will start after only three days of the festival. Rietkraag is a monument for nature, an information centre for all the surrounding nature, a start for bike-, sail-, and walkroutes but also fi t for the EYOF festival. A building formed out of the landscape and which translates its poetry. The rowing lane shall be placed in the polder, to show the ‘border’ of the land between the water. It shall be intergrated into the landscape, being a lake which is fi t for rowing, instead of a rowinglane.Artifi cial vs natural:Due to the location of the ‘rowing lane’ the three sports are divided. As each sport requeres essential functions three buildings will arise. One for rowing, one for surfi ng and sailing and one mainbuilding with the main functions. The fl oor and the roof elements follow the rational structure of the polder, the size is formed by the landscape inself. The facade represent the nature which has its own ‘freedom’ between the structure of the polder/building.
The structure of reed shows a head on a column (stalk). Alone the head is a small volume, close together they form a collar, one big volume. To translate this in the building the mainstructure will be made of the same element, seperated from each other.

entral 12.0Assignment:
Now the decision has been made to tunnel the A10 on the South-axe a new train station has to arise. During the master class we had to give an answer for the role the station should have and to propose a design. The master class took 4 and half day and was guided by Ton Schaap and Felix Claus.
The power of infrastructure:Currently the South-axe is cut by the highway and the tracks of the train and the metro. This is seen as a big border which separates North and South. When you look closer to the nature of the South-axe and its (fi nancial) meaning for the country and the world a station and its infrastructure fulfi ll a very important role. Due to its location near Schiphol the station give quick access to the world and could even act as a ‘waiting-room’ for the airport. The current Central Station will stay the ‘cultural’ entrance and the new station south will be the ‘fi nancial’ entrance of the city. The infrastructure can be seen as the veins of the economy and the station as its organs. As the infrastructure plays a crucial role for the economy one should not put it underground but rather keep it visible, to let people experience it when they use it.
Black boxOur proposal for the new station is to centre all the tracks into one box. The station as box does not want to make a connection between North and South. The South-axe is characterized by iconic buildings and companies. Hereby it is not necessary to connect North and South, but to make the station a fi nal location or a start-point. Each company in the direct surrounding of the station will get a entrance on their own, a ‘red carpet’. The ground fl oor of the station will get a close relation with the public space between the buildings. The space inside the black box will function on its own as the ‘waiting-room’ for Schiphol, with program as hotels, clubs, offi ces and meeting. Here one can drive in, park his car, check in his luggage and can spend his time before he has to go to the airport to take his fl ight.
The buildings at the Zuidas are icons, eyecatchers which are moreor less self-suffi cient; they do not need to interact with eachother.Station Zuid and the A10 are the reason they are here.
Due to its connection to Schiphol the South-axe is well connected with the world.
The ground fl oor of the station has astrong connection with the surrounding buildings, which all have there own ‘red carpet’.
From a platform station threatened tobe put underground to a highly visible infrastructure box, supplying all the needs of short and long distance travellers from the Zuidas to the rest of the world.
Experience:To centre all the various transportation one can experience them all at the same time and there is more space for light to enter. The train will stay on it current level. The metro will be levelled to the fi rst and second layer, the bus to the fi rst and the tram will be placed on the ground fl oor. When entering the station and waiting to leave one can see all the different movements inside the station. Besides the experience the transfers between the various transports is optimal, which makes the station function even better. The space inside the black box will be shaped by the movement of the tracks and the vide for the light. Some of the program even has a direct entrance from the metro platforms. The construction for the black box will play a crucial role in the experience. The beam will go from track to track and will follow the movements they make, giving the construction a subtile dynamic movement, making them a spine for the station.
