What is a Portfolio?

An entry level portfolio for the Education Department: Is a compilation of your work across disciplines Demonstrates your ability to be a successful

teacher Shows your growth from the beginning of your

time at WLC to the end of your student teaching semester

Why do you need to make a portfolio?

To get admitted into the Teacher Education program.

To gain experience in making portfolios. (You will be making them the rest of your life!)

To provide a point of reference from the beginning to the end of your time in the Teacher Education program.

You must be admitted to the Education Department in order to enroll in 300 or 400 level Education courses.

Requirements for Declaring an Education Major

Complete at least 30 credits Cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 Pass Listening Test Pass PPST (Praxis I) Completed Disclosure Questionnaire and Background

Check Complete pre-requisite coursework Complete Application Forms Advising file sent to Education Department Prepare a portfolio Sign up with Judy Kuehl to be put on the interview list Present your portfolio

Requirements for Declaring an Education Major

Complete at least 30 credits Usually, if you have taken at least 10 classes (2

semesters) you will be ready to apply for admission to the Teacher Education Department.

Cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 Pass Listening Test

Steinbrecher-Wilmington Listening Test Offered about twice per semester Get this done as soon as possible Sign up with Judy Kuehl (NOTE: The next Listening

Test is scheduled for Saturday, October 29th at 10am in L052)

Can be taken up to three times

Requirements for Declaring an Education Major

Pass PPST (Praxis I) Go to Judy Kuehl’s office for a paper form Call a local Sylvan Learning Center to take a

computerized version (Brookfield or New Berlin) There is a fee to take this test You must pass a standardized:

Math test Reading test Writing test

You may take this test an unlimited number of times.

Completed Disclosure Questionnaire and Background Check Blue form Must be filled out before your first clinical (EDU 292)

Complete pre-requisite coursework ENG 101 with a C or better COM 101 with a C or better EDU 201 with a BC or better PSY 120 with a C or better EDU 221 with a BC or better EDU 292 with a BC or better (clinical)

Must include copies of evaluations and assigned written responses.

Advising file sent to Education Department Your COL 101/102 advisor can have this done

Talk to your current advisor. He/she will send your advising file to the Education Department. Make sure this is done before your interview.

Prepare and Present a Portfolio

3 Video-taped presentations or mini-lessons with assessments

3 Letters of recommendation Research area topic Formal statement of your rationale for choosing teacher

education Formal statement of your philosophy of education Pre-student teaching clinical experiences and

evaluations with written evaluations Evidence of each of the 10 Teacher Standards Use of a theme to tie your portfolio together is a good

idea but is not required

NOTE: Make sure you contact your references ahead of time. They will be able to write a better quality letter if you give them plenty of time.

It is best to declare your major in Education as soon as you can.

You can already begin collecting artifacts for your portfolio and organizing them!
