DESIGN BRIEF: We were asked to interpret the link between nature, human beings and tradition. We were encouraged to come up with a design- a shared public facility and/or a recreational space that brought tradition ‘back into the fold’, not only in terms of architecture, but also in the perception of the common man.

PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE COAST AT CHIMBAI WITH THE INSTALLATION
The National Association of Schools of Architecture (NASA) in India, conducts a national level competition every year, the ANDC (Annual NASA Design Competition). Five of my friends and I, Neha Arte, represented our college, IES College of Architecture, in the ANDC for the year 2011 when we were in our Third year of B. Arch. and reached the final top ten stage of the ANDC.
Site Location: Chimbai village, Mumbai.

In the past, the lives of the Kolis revolved around the sea, and they depended on the sea for their livelihoods; hence they had maintained clean beaches where they would land their day’s catch. The village also had a treasure trove of traditional practices that are now slowly dying out, as most Kolis have now moved away from their traditional occupation of fishing and have taken up more lucrative jobs in the city. The western coast which was once used by the Kolis for their daily chores has degenerated into a dumping ground. Hence we decided to choose Chimbai Village and it’s waterfront as the site.

GROUND FLOOR
Grass pavers have been used on the entire
ground surface to facilitate percolation of water
and enhance the ground water table.
Shade giving trees have been planted to
reduce heating of the paver blocks.
EIGHTH FLOOR PODIUM
Endemic and naturalized species of plants
have been used in the design to reduce the
water requirement. No turf area is provided;
groundcovers have been used instead.
The water use can be restricted to
5l/ cu m/ day by this strategy.
