The objective of this project was to design a light using reclaimed timber from an old factory in Syracuse, New York.

Final modelThe final design is made from a single piece of reclaimed timber. Plexiglass spacers divide the piece into six different sections and allow light to shine out from the core.

Brief

LIGHTBAND

Lightband is a product that uses different color lights to regulate people’s sleep cycles and control their melatonin levels.

In context The lightband is meant to be worn before, during, and just after a night’s sleep.

NIGHT SETTINGAmber light is used at night because it emulates the sun setting. It slowly gets dimmer and dimmer in order to ease the user to sleep.

Morning SETTINGBlue light is used in the morning to simulate a sun rise. It gets brighter and brighter in order to wake up the user and give them energy.

Avian shelter

The goal of this project was to design an avian shelter for a specific type of bird.

Research

The bird I chose to design for was the burrowing owl. The burrowing owl breeds in a very hot climate, which can sometimes effect the develop-ment of their eggs. These owls must ensure that their eggs stay cool enough so they will hatch correctly. My design focused on a system for keeping their eggs cool. I researched termite mounds because they have a form of natural ventilation.

Renderings

The avian shelter that I designed mimics the natural ventilation system of a termite mound. Hot air is released through the chimney while cool air is taken in through the side vents. This system of natural ventilation keeps the owl’s eggs cool so that they wont overheat and die. The shelter is also meant to be buried in order to emulate the burrowing owls natural nest.

Reclaimed chair

For this project we used reclaimed wood from an old factory in Syracuse, New York to design a chair.

Prototype

Final modelThe final deign is made from 100% reclaimed wood. The chair is held to-gether using lap and dowel joints, which means there are no screws or nails in the final piece. The chair also features a leather pillow for added comfort.

The requirements for this project were to design a cardboard table that is structurally sound and can be flat packed.

Final modelThe final table design is made up of four different pieces of cardboard. The table can be easily assembled and is also able to be flat packed. It is very structurally sound and has been tested with weights up to 35 pounds.
