Spatial Composition
-As the forms become smaller and digresses upwards it gets harder for entry
Used this pattern to create a framework. Explored the forms spatially,
where as the scale of the symbols reduce, there is less room and
‘window’, that creates a trap and tightening effect.
Model to inflict a collapsing effect, where spatially the frames are fragile.
3
Landforming
Applied techniques of subtraction and extrusion to explore landform spatially,
where a surface underground attempts to explore the idea of privacy. This section
Attempts to show that whilst privacy can be gained, it can also be communal, where
Others standing from the top can see what is below.
Curves below surface below are overlapping to show that whilst there is individual
Space, it is shared.
Details from the plan explore slopes and sudden edges to provide room for activities
And give room to privacy, that acts as a barrier and ‘fence’. Long lines exist to show
That more secured privacy can be gained, but must walk longer and try harder to
Destination, ground.
4
Assemblage - Grafting
5
Focused on three materials/forms;
‘flows’, ‘threads’ and ‘triangular’ shapes
That share different characteristics in shape and form but
can create a ‘third space’ when combined or mended together.
The end result is a structure that can self-sustain itself and where
Its combination can complement one another, hence
Demonstrating grafting.
In this context, by threading it helps to connect triangular shapes
Together to form a triangular prism, The flows thus provide a
Passage and pathway for people to travel and go from one
Triangular shape to another realistically, and acts as a linkage.
As illustrated in the plan, the fusion of the three elements creates
A third dimensional area, acting like a web, can it can create opportunities
For activities and functions such as a chance to stand, climb and crawl.
Spatial Temporal Narrative - Debating
We are descending down. We are ready to land.
Faces of fear can be found. We see them stand. Ready to attack.
We are close to this red planet. We see familiar faces, who seem to have adapted to new
places.
We are landing on this manmade walkway.
The red figures come charging at us halfway.
Hydraulic bombs and laser beams.
Giant collisions and flashy screams.
Their anger resembles the thunders raging.
But our desperation shadows it with our enormous spaceships.
‘We have no room here – go back to Earth’ – they yell.
We cry, “Earth no longer exists”.
6
This narrative explores the concept of ‘ownership’, ‘invasion’ and ‘desperation’, where it describes a story of Earth people once setting a Mars colony, and after
Processes of climate change and man-made activities leading to the destruction of liveability in planet Earth, Earth people are forced to settle in Mars, where they feel there is a right
For them to take the land, but Mars colony people feel threatened and there are intellectual disagreements, thus exploring the idea of ‘debating’.
Superimposition Collage - Debating
7
Applied the technique of finding a certain shape from superimposition,
In this context, circles, and attempting to create comets to reshape its pre-existing use/function.
Inspired by the surrounding flows, or noodle-like movements as fire or the tail of a comet, with all other
Elements/ shapes / forms to be blue to illustrate Earth/water.
Experience Collage - Metal
8
Inspired by the form of
Cans, and the opening of cans
To create a space to explore
3 dimensionally.
Applied technique of finding
Household items relating to ‘metal’;
i.e. fork, ladders and chains to
Complete the collage.
Applied shadows and reflection to
Explore metal’s characteristic
Of being reflective.
Photoshopped barb wire to show
Brittleness and also a seismic
Movement to explore metal
Being magnetic.
100 word narrative
It’s grey and independent day.
They’re coming. After us. After me.
We have no choice but flee. We run. I run.
It feels so dangerous, so brittle.
The structures are so big, I feel so little.
The sound of walking echoes like walking on a tin.
Shivering our skin.
The smell of rust, like a burning crust.
I can see a glimpse of myself from the reflection of
the steel.
But what I see clearly are the flashes coming at us
down the hill.
Will I survive? Or will I die?
May the steel be in my favour.
9
This narrative, accompanied for the Experience collage,
attempts to further explore and add ambience
And explore elements such as scent, reflection,
Sound, atmosphere and texture with the material of steel.
The story discusses about one figure running away from
Invasion, and the figure’s personal encounter when
fleeing away.
Attempted to explore spatially through storytelling where
The figure running uphill (that takes more effort and
Friction and gravity) preventing fast fleeing
To explore desperation and suffering.
FINAL PROJECT
10
Full Plan
Applied this particular orientation situated at Concrete Lawn to show invasion
Originating from the East, where the sun usually is, to block sunlight access to MSD
Building, where the primary occupants (students) are.
11
Sections of final project attempt to illustrate the idea of
‘pain and suffering’ that add emotionally to the idea of debating,
By exploring the characteristics of metal.
In here, reflections can be seen from the prism structures on the left
To depict metal’s characteristic of being reflective, and also to depict ‘ownership’
And superiority and over-taking through light.
The shape of cans is applied to this final project, where openings of cans
Provide the opportunity to explore spatially. Cans in the section are sloped dramatically,
Where running figures (people fleeing away) will be hard to leave safely without
Injuries or any self-harm. Different scales and sizes of the can are applied to explore
Difficulty of one in trying to escape, where openings become smaller and smaller when
Trying to reach for safe land, inspired from games where each round becomes harder.
Explored landform to add on the idea of pain and suffering, where the land is sloped
Dramatically to explore spatially difficulty for one to run upwards compared to down-hill,
Which takes up more time and energy.
The final project tries to explore debating as ‘a despairing and no win’ situation.
12
Model inspired by 9/11 memorial in New York
City, The United States of America. where
spatially a visitor of the memorial standing by
the side cannot see an end/ground level of the
hole of the waterfall, which has been translated
to the final project (model) of one standing on
the side (such as the figure on the model
standing by the side) cannot see ground or any
surface level, to add on the idea of suffering and
desperation, where it adds to the idea of ‘never-
ending’ when trying to escape.
Thus, desperation and pain through infinity is
explored through the concept of ‘infinity’.
