L’objectif de cet atelier consiste à utiliser le souterrain en op-timisant ses qualités. Nous avons choisi d’exploiter ses pro-priétés thermiques en créant un jardin semi-enterré et nous avons utilisé le souterrain afin de developper une stratégie sub-urbaine.

BAUTANIQUE est un laboratoire de recherche lié à un jardin d’étude. L’inertie du sol permet de conserver la chaleur, elle est utilisée afin de créer un jardin de recherche souterrain et de rendre possible la culture d’espèces spécifiques protégées. L’exca-vation fonctionne comme une serre semi-enterrée où la ven-tilation est permise par la toiture semi-ouverte. Le jardin est le prolongement du laboratoire souterrain. Les plantes sont classées selon leur hauteur et leurs besoins en lumière. Celles qui ont besoin d’un minimum de lumière se situent en profondeur. De plus petites excavations sont creu-sées dans les façades et leurs dimensions sont déterminées par les espèces qu’elles accueillent. Différentes circulations sont établies dans le but de faire coha-biter les scientifiques qui travaillent au laboratoire et le public qui visite le jardin.

BAUTANIQUE se situe dans un ancien quartier industriel dévalorisé, entre la vieille-ville et la ville de Montreux. Le par-king qui s’y trouvait a été rendu souterrain et le jardin offre maintenant un dépaysement rapide aux utilisateurs. Le site a été choisi afin d’être revalorisé grâce à la création d’un nouvel espace public. Le jardin fonctionne comme un cœur irriguant les organes. Il établit, à différentes échelles, de nombreuses connexions entre le laboratoire et le parking, avec la voie souterraine qui est édifiée, ou encore le quai de la rivière que nous aména-geons.

BAUTANIQUEa space for life underground

The objective of this study was to design a place which takes advantage of the un-derground properties. We chose to meet the objective by turning an above-ground urban parking into an underground space of living and science which uses the ther-mal inertia of the ground at its best.

Bautanique is an underground labora-tory for plant science, public garden and refurbished city parking. The thermal iner-tia of the ground keeps enough heat to grow selected endangered species. The sunlight and air ventilation needed are pro-vided by the partially covered roof made of glass panels. The plants are placed according to their final height and need of sunlight. Those which require less light are placed in darker areas. The space is designed to allow both the researchers to work and the public to walk in and enjoy the garden all at the same time.

Bautanique is situated in an old industrial and depreciated area of Montreux, Swit-zerland. The old over ground parking is rebuilt underground and the garden offers an easily accessible change of scenery for the inhabitants, while regenerating the area.The garden works like a heart which connects in different ways the laboratory, the parking and a new subway.

Se représenter à nouveau des objets qui existent, que l’on pense déjà connaitre, tel est l’exercice de cette année. Nos relevés des cinq unités d’habitation permettent une étude com-parative afin de comprendre les différences ar-chitecturales d’un objet qui semble a priori être le même à chaque lieu: une unité d’habitation. Or le contexte social, géographique ainsi que le progrès technique sont déterminants pour les choix constructifs, l’usage des matériaux ou l’ameublement des appartements.

Notre groupe composé de six étudiants est spécialisé dans l’enveloppe des unités. Les redessins et maquettes se basent sur nos mesures et photos prises sur place ainsi que sur d’importantes recherches d’archives.Tout au long de nos relevés et recherches, où la restitution des élèments de façade a été fondamentale pour comprendre ces «ma-chines à habiter», nous avons problématisé les choix de l’architecte:

Dans quel ordre et comment les élèments de construction sont-ils assemblés ? Sont-ils coulés sur place ou préfabriqués ?

La composition des façades est-elle simplement le résultat des imbrications d’appartements ou est-ce un dessin rythmé voulu en amont par Le Corbusier ?

La polychromie des façades visibles depuis l’exté-rieur suit-elle une loi ?

This exercise’s objective was to rediscover something we thought we already knew. Our surveys of the five building units from Le Cor-busier allowed us to compare and understand the architectural differences between objects which seem to be the same everywhere they are built: building units. In reality, the geography, social context and technical improvements have a critical impact on the way the building is built, the type of ma-terials used and the setup of each flat.

Our group was made up of six students specialised in building unit envelopes. We redrew the schematics and built models based on measurements and pictures taken during our surveys, alongside intensive ar-chive research. During this work, a thorough understanding of all the aspects of the building envelope was key, we have studied the main architectural choices of Le Corbusier:

In which order and how are the construction elements assembled together?Has in-situ concrete been used for those ele-ments or have they been precast?

Is the façade composition simply the result of the way the flats are setup or is it a repetitive pattern imagined by Le Corbusier beforehand?

Do the multiple colours of the façade follow a particular pattern?

Dans le cadre d’un exercice académique, il nous a été demandé d’imaginer une façon de rénover la façade de l’unité d’habitation de Briey. L’objectif est d’agrandir l’espace de jour des apparte-ments qui ne sont plus adaptés aux ameublements et aux besoins actuels. Notre parti se base sur nos observations faites de l’utilisation des loggias par les habitants. En effet, contrairement à Marseille où le climat ensoleillé rend agréable l’usage des loggias comme terrasses, à Briey les loggias ne sont pas des lieux de vie. Au mieux utilisées comme entrepôts, ces espaces ne semblent pas être adaptés à ce climat. Nous avons donc, dans un premier temps, étudié l’en-soleillement des façades et remplacé certaines loggias par des balcons préfabriqués. Dans un second temps, nous avons avancé et modifié les châssis et fenêtres correspondant aux espaces de jour afin d’agrandir le sé-jour et la salle à manger. Sachant qu’il y a plusieurs types d’appartements (mon-tant, descendant, traversant, double hauteur, etc.) nous avons finalemet obtenu quatre nouvelles configurations de l’enveloppe.

Le rendu de ce court exercice est sous forme de dessins et maquetteS à l’échelle 1:20 comprenant un échantillon de façade de neufs appartements.

Project of refurbishment of the façade of the Briey building unit.In this project, we were asked to redesign the façade of the building unit of Briey. The objective was to enlarge the living areas which are not adapted to today’s needs and furnishings.

We based our design on our observations of the way the people who are living in those flats today used the loggias. Unlike Marseille where the warm weather allows people to use the loggias as open balconies, in Briey those outside areas could not be used as living spaces. At best used as storage space, the loggias did not seem adapted to the Briey climate. At first, we studied the rate of sunshine of the façades and replaced the loggias by pre-cast balconies. Secondly, we modified the structure of the outside windows to enlarge the living room and the dining room. We designed four types of envelope confi-guration, one for each type of apartment.

At the end of the project, we delivered a model and drawings (1:20 scale) of a façade portion with nine apartments.

concept: framing the light, the view and mobility in the three directions. The model is made of three-dimensional patterns on plaster, inspired by the lands-cape of a forest. The aim of the project is to recreate the sensations we perceive by walking in a forest.

concept: our timber frame is made of multi-ple layers of wood assembled together wit-hout the use of a binding agent, functioning together as a system.

This “textile” woven structure differs from tradi-tional frameworks in which a local rupture of-ten causes a systemic failure in its ensemble. In our framing arrangement, each element is independent which considerably augments the system’s strength.
