4Renovation - Social HousingIn Johannesburg today, there is a big need for cheap rental accomodation for an increasing urban popula-tion. Old office buildings, which have been standing vacant for over a decade are abundant in the city. These buildings create an opportunity to house the citys new inhabitants. The renovation of these build-ings is contributing to renewal of downtown Johannesburg and helps the move towards a more integrated city.In this project an office building is being renovated for a social housing company (which is owned by the municpality). There are several challenges:Decent home for low cost while while not comprim-ising on environment quality (minimal intervention for maximum impact).Light, ventilation, structure, acoustics, new services, local labour (unemplayment is a major issue), job creation. This specific site is in the heart of downtown, amid a bustelling informal public transport interchange, which itself creates many challenges.Design, planning and execution

Design - Site and ServiceSouth Afrcia has many informal settlements, where people live in corrugated iron shacks without drink-ing water, sewerage or electricity. The government is trying to find a way to upgrade and bring services like water and electricity to these informal settlements. The government has developed a concept of site and servicewhich means it provides a floor slab with a water point. Thereafter, the shack builder will enclose the structure and build on. This is a design for Alliance Ext. 9 in Ekurhuleni, South Africa.

Tasked with designing an urban scale media com-plex, this complex project demanded defining the design issues across various scales. On the metropolitain scale, defining, enhancing and connecting existing public spaces with a pedestrian network was a priority. Overall legibility would be re-established when principle axes and pedestrian corridors would be introduced. The open nature of the building is designed to stimulate public interac-tion and a sense of transparency and accessibility, which is currently lacking in the existing urban fabric

The top component of the building is organizedaround a couryard, which faces into itself as well as into the sqaure. Large South facing glass walls let in abundant light and create a connection to the square adjacent. In the courtyard privacy is cachied while still maintaining a constant connection with the context. The deep middle component houses the functions that dont require natural sunlight and is sonically protected from the loud environment. The gound component is a completely publicpart of the building, responding to the public by grading the space into event space (cafe and out-door cinema screen) and civic space mediateque and cinemateque on mezzanine floors. Intimacy is estab-lished by roofing this component. The underground componenthouses the large and dark cinema and sound record-ng studios.

It can be assumed that all human rights ultimately relate back to the human body. The concept that the museum was to create static pillar that represents the stabiltity of our most precius inheritance. Human rights may change, but this pillar whereupon the story of humanity is to be displayed / projected. Functionally, the pillar also seperates the building between administrative and auditorium blocks and simultaneously connects the two halves again on the exhibition floors. The inspiration for the organic form embracing the unchangeing human body represents a loose definition of the human spirit. The fragmented faade is brought together by the human body envel-oped in a spirit.

Godswill Nwankwa
Our Client sells clothing. His new winter collection occupies three large plastic bags. His Major hassle is in setting up his stall. Even though he only takes one trip from the storage facility (a basement in the adja-cent block), he has to assemble the stand from indi-vidual parts. Our design seeks to improve on setup time and storage capacity
Zulu Sandals
Some in Johannesburg CBD have taken the initiative in the manufacture and sale of goods to the masses. The above-pictured zulu sandals are manufactured in the highrises of Jeppe street. Sewing, tayloring, mending and similar artisanal experties are readily available. Operation Clean Sweep, saw hundereds of traders harrassed and robbed by the police in early 2014. Our site was badly affected by this action.
Troyeville
Godswill lives in and commutes daily from Troyeville, a prei-urban area of Johannesburg. Keeping mobile is absolutely essential for his business. Should his close-by storage be in any compromised, he should be able to move his business. The cart is designed to this with its large curb-climbing bicyclie wheels. It can also be connected to a bicycle or pulled manually.

Arkitekturfabriken, StockholmDuring my stay in Stockholm, I was employed at an architectural firm named Arkitekturfabriken (architecture factory). The small size of the office afforded me the opportunity to get to know the broad spectrum of issues an architectural firm faces. While I was there I modelled (revit), worked on client presentations, submitted council submissions, administrated the website and built a wood-en shed on the island of Har. Fortunately, I was able to familiarize myself with the swedish tech-nical terminology and building codes relatively quickly. I was also able to take part in meetings with building companies, politicans and users, where I learned the importance of directed meeting.Perhaps the most valuable lessons were those about the impor-tance of an iteration based workflow and fail fast tactics in deci-sion making.
Whilst living in Stockholm, I regularly attended lectures and ex-hibitions, visited the KTH graduate exhibition as well as a press conference where the brief for the new Nobel Center on Blasie-holmen was announced.

TrapphusrenoveringRenovation of Stairway, DanderydA residents co-operative in Danderyd, Stock-holm comissioned arkitekturfabriken to over-see renovations to their buildings, starting with the stairwells. I was involved in project man-aging, which involved extensive scheduling, aquisition and logistics.
22
Widrikssons keri.Widrikssons warehouse (a previous arkitek-turfabriken design) was in need for a retrofit. Company policy was changeing as it start-ed useing rapeseed oil fuel in their midsize trucks. The cramped size of the plot had to be maximized and trucks accomodated.
When Ikea became a major client of Widriks-sons, the logistics contractor was convinced to convert their fleets fuel to biogas. In this project I had to consult some confusing swed-ish fire safety regulations (still in its infancy regarding biogas) as well as resolve particular issues regarding the unbuilt railway line next to the site and a possibility of sharing the sta-tion with DHL next door.

Kwa-Thema Soccer FieldsAssistant to Hannah le Roux
The proliferation of ad-hoc soccer fields in the historic township of kwathema indicate a need for open recreational space, which ends up all too often being enveloped in corporate advertisements or fenced paranoid public officials. The kwathema soccer project tries to legitimize the existance of this need on its own terms. An extensive mapping of the area was made in order to find a suitable site to house a prototypical event spaceassembly. Difficulties and possibilities are ever-present and equally stimulating. This project forms part of Hannah le Rouxsongoing investigations.

Cube of OppositionsThe first design project at the University of Witwatersrand was an exploration of the broad themes of design. Here I was able to explore themes framed as opposites (eg, different-same, light-dark etc.) and see their effect in a graphical and spatial way
The deign of the cube was a com-bination of concepts which were dominated by orthoganol-diagonal and small-big. The resulting cube was a jumble conflicting and con-trasting concepts.
