Dominican Museum of
African SlavesThe objective of the project was to create a museum in the Dominican Republic paying tribute to the lives of the African slaves and the abuse suffered during this era. The concept of the project was based on the idea that characteristics of the building would provoke similar feelings to those felt during the slave trade thus recounting the story by way of observation throughout the museum. The spatial quality allows spectators to identify with the story as various aspects of the Atlantic slave trade are depicted throughout the architectural design.
The route inside the museum is characterized by volumes known as “voids” that penetrate the building vertically and consequently divert the observers. Additionally, the design on the on windows were inspired by the chains used to tie the slaves, and create a phenomenological effect on the spectators. Other features of the museum include the simultaneity of the the two stairs placed at the opposite ends of the building, where the user has the option to experience the museum from exterior stairs which lead to the last level, or the interior stairs
characteristics of the building work perceptions and create pragmatic effects on the observers.
