Born and raised in Paris, Alix attended l’Atelier Met de Penninghen where she discovered her talent for creating whimsical paintings and detailed murals.

In 2007, Alix founded Princ-es & Crows in LA, offering a complete range of custom services including custom murals, decorative paintings, wallpaper, rugs, and textiles.

Through many years of commercial and residential collaborations with interior designers and architects, Alix has expanded her port-folio from the US to France, England and the West Indies.

Her projects have been featured in multiple interior design publications such as House Beautiful, Traditional Home, the L.A. Times, and LUXE Magazine.

he Los Feliz aerie of Alix Soubiran is just the kind of place you’d imagine for the whimsical designer of Princes & Crows wallpaper and decor. A sleepy black rabbit shuffles across the studio’s hardwood floor; personal paintings of bunnies, float-

ing rams and a mischievous-looking squirrel are stacked under a suite of paned windows; layers of sloping decks wrap around the home; and narrow staircases connect the three charmingly mismatched levels.

Trained at Atelier Met de Penninghen as a muralist, the former Parisian began her career in 2000, decorating the interiors of various celebrity homes and stylish houses in the West Indies, Palm Beach, France and England. Then, three years ago, something about the reflective light in California and the distance from her homeland sparked a transition to wallpaper.

“I had something to say that I couldn’t say with murals,” she notes. In her world, scenes of feasts, fawns and cupids would be verboten; nothing would be classic; her papers would have monikers such as “Major Tom” and “Sea Ballet.”

The subjects are oversized flowers, deep-sea creatures, animal circus acts and abstract patterns, all in harmonious hues. “The colors cannot not be overwhelming but still must have character,” she says, pulling out one of her hand-painted gouaches. “I want my wallpaper to be as if candle smoke were penetrating the walls,” she remarks about another and gestures to a soothing mixture of butter yellow and

French blue panels, and gold leaves she says could never be called “grandma.”

Once she paints a prototype, her hus-band—music director and visual artist, Joseph Mauceri—helps her transform the colors to Pantone with Adobe Photoshop. The designs are then printed on paper, metallic and vinyl options.

“There is something very primal about art on walls,” she adds. “It’s what the cavemen did, no?”
