UT I have had the opportunity to work with several areas of commercial design from retail

to hospitality to performance space. When we first enter the program, the curriculum revolves around conceptual design. I believe that my first semester of concentrating on conceptual design has helped me to place special emphasis on the specific space, aesthetics of the space, and the way the general public interacts in the space; thus, the construction of the project becomes the model of my design process.

Hospitality, residential, and historical preservation projects have gained my interest throughout my years in school. I hope to concentrate on these areas of commercial design in the future. When Kenneth Brown, from Kenneth Brown Design in Los Angeles, instructed our class to redesign a boutique hotel, I delved into the area of material selection and connected the materials I found with the concept of the space. The product does not always dictate the space but rather collaborates and enhances the idea to create a physical model.

Page 6: Portfolio

We venture to a place where we can escape from the challenges and pressures of everyday life to a life full of luxury and fashion. A place where our sheets are turned down at night, celebrity-star hair and makeup is customary, and our outdoor deck is where you find all your friends. While sipping on champagne, overlooking Central Park with your friends, you can hear and experience the busy city life. At Arlo, yoU can experience an elegant, timeless atmosphere that is not of the past but of a new generation that is trying to keep up with like-minded designers and art gurus.

In New York City, a vast majority of boutique hotels were launched in the mid 90s in parts of Manhattan, such as SOHO, TriBeCa, the Meatpacking District, and Chelsea. Manhattan grew rapidly in its downtown neighborhoods; this area is also where a dominant number of younger people congregate to live and dwell. The Upper East Side is known as the high-end residential neighborhood, particularly around 79th Street. Many families reside in this area due to its quieter surrounding. However, the Upper East is home to many museums, art galleries, shopping, and restaurants where the younger generation assembles to for new exhibitions in the Metropolitan Museum of Art or to hear a live, free music concert in Central Park. In order for the Upper East to see an expansion in its demographic of young people, the essence of what is fashionable, hip, and luxurious needs to be established for current New Yorkers and world travelers. 995 Fifth Avenue is a high-end residential apartment building located on the corner of 81st Street and Fift Avenue, across from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. My problem is to convert this residential residence into a boutique hotel that includes a salon, rooftop bar, restaurant, and designer retail stores. With research and understanding of the younger generation’s social behaviors, the design will successfully produce a built environment that satisfies their desires of a high-end luxury environment that is inexplicably different from all other institutions. Thus, the Upper East Side will see an influx of a new demographic.

At Eclipse, our mission is to create elegant, classic environments which concentrate on improving and highlighting the existing structure relevant to a specific region.

Page 23: Portfolio

Eclipse balances structure and function. Employees network with each other and collaborate around central areas. The office is designed in accordance with its mission statement by utilizing the existing space before constructing any new entity. Baton Rouge’s architecture is highlighted throughout the space. Natural lighting and accent lighting accentuate columns, moldings, and floors. By utilizing a simple color palette of white, black, and grey, special emphasis is placed on the space.

CONCEPT Statement

ECLI

PSE

The lighting design focuses on the layout of the space by directing guests and employees from one end to the other. The design also highlights special key areas such as collaboration spaces and the kitchen.

WitH the implementation of a unified design, I combined eclectic, mid-century furniture with contemporary style pieces. To unify the exterior and the interior, I created a cool color palette that is calming but also invigorating which will transform the Blevins Building into a beacon of light for a new future.

G MISSION Statement

The Blevin’s Building in Franklin, LA is a historical landmark constructed in 1920; in the past, the space served as an automobile dealership selling old Model T’s. Currently, the Blevin’s Building serves as parish offices, including the Chamber of Commerce, the State Senator’s office, and the Louisiana Workforce Commission. With the help of Main Street Projects Organization, the community of Franklin hopes to recreate a piece of history into a performance theatre and gallery.

A small community takes pride in the little details which make their town unique. The aspirations and hopes for a revived community radiate life and excitement to all involved in the process. To generate this restoration, the focus of the design should concentrate on wholeness by fusing the past with the present.

To mimic the Anglo Saxon style of the town, I looked to Charleston, SC and the colorful, restored buildings located in its downtown area. The city underwent a restoration of its historical buildings that has taken 13 years to complete. This journey has preserved history and has enhanced the beautiful landscape of the port city. Thus, I developed a plan to preserve the building and its architectural details. Not only was it important to preserve the building, but the design also concentrates on the landscape of the bayou.

L MISSION Statement

A clashing of opposites, which work harmoniously together is a natural phenomenon that is attractice and fascinating to observe. The design will help to inculcate the balance of inverses so that they work together to become a dynamic, edgy environment. Leigh Hotel transmits a cathedral haven that is combined with modern Navajo influences to create a vibrant, sensual environment that is pleasing to all the senses.

The hardwood floor becomes softer, more romantic by red Perisan rugs and inkblot wallcoverings. Navy, black, and brown colors combine with the more idealistic, warm colors of mustard yellow, turquoise, orange and red accents. The LA citygoer comes home to his past but keeps his onlook of new trends in this rustic retreat.

A MISSION Statement

The project is based on Italio Calvino’s Invisible Cities. The problem was to choose a short story from the book and create a city expressing the significant attributes that make the city unique. To supplement our study of space planning, we were instructed to design a building that is significant to the city and the citizens who inhabit this imaginary area.

Olinda is centered around a new blooming Olinda; the older buildings have been pushed to the parameters of the city - making them larger because of their age and the new growth blossoming in the center. The city is centered around a nuclei, the center of development for new neighborhoods and project developments.

Within a semester class, a full set of construction documents were developed for a residential home with a commercial office space. These documents were created in AutoCAD and included a cover sheet, ADA requirements, floor plan, floor finish plan, FF&E plan, room finish schedule, window and door schedules, elevations, enlarged kitchen elevations, details, and kitchen details.
