ACADEMIC WORK
URBAN MARKETCENTRAL SQUARECAMBRIDGE, MAFALL 2010
Project Information:My design intent was to reconnect the existing commercial area that wraps into and around the west side of the site. Ad-ditionally, I found that Central Square offered a lot of knooks and crannies, especially, the mural painted alley near Harvest Co-Op. This led me to determine the circulation pattern along with the placement of the amphitheater, while in conjunction connected back the northern residential community by creat-ing an inviting and intimate theater, enjoyable by adults and children. Historically, Central Square once had a multitude of 5-6 story buildings, while some are still standing, many were replaced by smaller one and two story buildings. With that occurrence, the face of Central Square changed dramatically, and subsequently it was added to the historical district. To reconnect the site back to Central Square, I chose towering wood frames and suggestive canopies as the language for the market and amphitheater. Through scale and proportion, these elements, come together to form a vibrant, connected, and enjoyable urban market and amphitheater.
Problems: Urban Market becomes a transitional space, where patrons flow through, make purchases and return home to store pur-chases. Volume must support consumption. The proximity of the Cinema to adjacent residences, creates noise issues in terms of time of day use and video and sound projection. A cushion must be devised to protect residence from over disturbance, pollution and maintain their existing privacy.
For the market and amphitheater, I saw two conditions that I felt needed to be addressed. The first is that the site has been in its current condition for so long that it needs to create a state of pause or recognition to gain attention and become prosperous. Much unlike the Mass Ave. portions of Central Square, the flat seamless facades create a sense of edge with no real points of attraction beyond the programs con-tained within the buildings. To counteract that condition the program must project out to the people, rather the design must be proactive in gaining patrons...avoid the build it and they will come mantra. Secondly, once patrons do engage the design, the problem occurs on how to keep them there for the cinema, or create social opportunities for sharing and consuming food with in it. Surrounding context of the site.
DESIGN THOUGHTS:Because the site is not directly on Mass. Ave, the entry and stage placement is essential to drawing in patrons from the heart of cen-tral square and creating a safe and recognizable market for all varieties of patrons. Additionally, the idea to offer a kitchen/ restau-rant where patrons can have items cooked or prepared for consump-tion would contribute to the over-all effect of having a sustained amount of users at any given time.
C.P.S. ART ANNEXCENTRAL SQUARECAMBRIDGE, MASPRING 2011
PROJECT INFORMATION:
Cambridge Public Schools Art Annex: 60,000sf Mixed-Use performing arts center + 28,000sf Performing Arts School & Residences
Concept: Folding as an apparatus for connectivity and transformative functionality Central Square is a dynamic environment, yet it is very linear and very rigid in its gesture to the energy of Mass Ave. This dynamism is expressed in the change over of use within the site. Day and night reflects this changeover in how the day operates as a business and commer-cial hub, while the night becomes a social and performance based experience, and between this changeover there is overlap. My goal is to use folding as a way to connect these changeovers and limit the rigidity existing within the site in order to provide stronger connectivity to people and experiences, both visually and physically, and offer the flexibility necessary to accommodate transitions of function based on user activity, all in one consolidated form. The design centers around the outdoor performance space which is open to the commercial, residential and artist residents. Since Central Square is more of a localized market, as compared to Harvard Square, with immediate connections to the surrounding residences, my thesis and intent is to fold in disparate elements of residential, commercial, urban and green space and elements that retain the essence of the Central Square area and the prominent urban landscape. This act is intended to retain a consistent connection to the dynamic features and activity of the square as well as develop a connotation for new acts occurring with in the site and design solution, and then by doing so, would then be interwoven into the holistic urban fabric.
Adjacent to the primary site, my goal for the second site is to create visual and physical connections. The program consists of a perform-ing arts school and market rate-residential apartments. The performing arts school serves as a viewport to the primary site for residents within the apartments, while creating separation from the public view into their outdoor space. Additionally, the performing arts school serves as a place of activity that gestures to the primary site while creating a stage for viewing and being viewed within the site.

Experience:Working directly with the engineers during this project gave me a formative experience in regards to considering lighting, ventilation, and piping issues. Working collaboratively with the engineers, I created the plumbing, hvac, and electrical construction documents. This gave me a strong understanding of graphic and technical conventions as well as considerations for design solutions re-lated to programming. Through team meet-ings we evaluated design issues that could be resolved through modeling the conditions such as lighting exposure and its effect on the interactive screens positioned around the spaces.

Experience:
Working through design documenta-tion and generating/maintaining a 3D model offered many challenges and opportunities for solutions in the way the architect and myself could use the model to inform users and con-tractors of design changes and pres-ent solutions to problems as they arise. Since the project was technol-ogy driven, we were able to work out issues related with scale and visibil-ity across the three classrooms as well as contained within a single one.

4 person team : Lead Architect, Project Assistant, Mech & Electrical Engineer
Roles & Responsibilities:
For this project, I worked directly under the Lead Architect. I performed the field measurements, coordinated user and team meetings, devel-oped the program and project schedule and generated all the diagrams/drawings.
Summary & Experience:
This experience was my first with a N.I.H. submission which provided me learning opportunities in the submission criteria, documentation re-quirements and coordination with team members in order to gain the proper data to compile a cohesive submittal document. As with the iTLC project, doing the initial field investigations gave me exposure to issues of existing infrastructure, circulation, adjacent room uses, and mech/electrical conditions. Because of the program and space requirements, I feel I have gained an better design understanding of laboratory and containment rooms and specifications.

Roles & Responsibilities:
Working with landscape architect, I developed 2D/3D drawings for client presentations, coordination with en-gineers and architects and planning board approval. I had minor roles in coordinating drawings for review with the architects, but mostly per-formed plan and 3D renderings to be incorporated with client propos-als.
Summary & Experience:
The project offered time manage-ment challenges in meeting de-manding deadlines for the architect and client as well as preparing finite detailing for planning board presen-tations. Though my design role was limited to more of the hardscape, I gained experience in planting placement and selection as well as incorporating landscape design that responds to the architecture.

Roles & Responsibilities:
Working with landscape architect and production assistant, I devel-oped 2D drawings for client presen-tations and construction drawings. I had minor roles in coordinating drawings for review with the archi-tects, but mostly produced planting and hardscape plans and masonry details.
Summary & Experience:
I gained experience in hardscape detailing, additional experience in professional drafting and working closely with civil engineering draw-ings. As with the last three projects, I also had to manage my time, labor budget, and coordination with other disciplines. This project offered me another opportunity to be more self-sufficient in researching hardscape details with minimal direction from the landscape architect, as well as utilizing my knowledge for the previ-ous project.
HARDSCAPE
Experience:
Detailing the hardscape and retaining walls gave me a new understanding of the con-struction of the landscape and necessary support members along with the layering required for proper moisture protection and soil stability. Additionally, it gave me anoth-er opportunity to expand upon my technical ability in detail construction.

Program:
Two part addition to existing home
Roles & Responsibilities:
My role was to document existing house and propose schemes for and two-sided addition. I performed site measurements and devel-oped 2D/3D drawings and imagery for client review.
Summary & Experience:
I gained experience designing at a more inti-mate scale (residential) compared to my pre-vious practice work. It gave me an opportuni-ty to own a design and present design options directly to client design options. I also gained more practice experience with drafting and modeling techniques.
Experience:
Through the project, I gained more confidence in my design process and drafting capabilities. I gained more experience in presenting design ideas outside of the office. It provided a differ-ent atmosphere and project type for me to be involved with (working with homeowners rath-er that doctors and researchers). One of the challenges was trying to encompass the clients wants compared to their needs in terms of scale and program. Those this was a challenge, it did provide more opportunities to expand my tech-nical skills and explore design ideas in terms of materiality and function. Much of the de-sign oriented around an addition to the existing kitchen, which gave me an opportunity to exer-cise some of my previous design experience as a kitchen designer. Though the project did not continue into design development phase, I feel confident that I would be able to meet the needs of the project through detailing, city approval, coordination with engineers and clients.
