KATHARYN GILLESPIECO-OP STATEMENTParticipating in the Professional Practice Co-op
Program, alternating semesters of college study with semesters of work in the field of
Interior Design.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
DESIGN STATEMENTI believe designers are given the opportunity to shape the world into functional, appropriate, and aesthetically pleasing environments. However, I see interior design as more than creating a space. I see it as appreciating culture: traveling, listening, and interpreting local habits and needs into a space that is not only efficient, but productive and nurturing.

01LITERARY CENTER CASE STUDYARCHITECTURAL DRAWING & RENDERING
DIAGRAMS & DRAWINGSThese drawings document the facade and interior of the Walnut Hills Public Library. All hand drawn to scale, they articulate the symmetrical nature of the space as defined by the marche. It’s exterior Doric columns lead inward to the classic spatial order.
02MAUSOLEUM RENDERINGHAND SKETCHING & PHOTOSHOP
BRIGGS SWIFT MAUSOLEUM
DRAWING ITERATIONSThese drawings depict a concept exploration of form, space, and scale. From the first hand drawn sketch to the final rendering pass, this project introduced me to new hand and digital techniques. Placement and scale of figures was also an important component of this exploration.
HAND DRAWINGTraced from a photograph, this hand
drawing served as the basis for my mausoleum rendering.
FIRST PASSQuick Photoshopping and hand
rendering lead to this layer of higher contrast and detail.
FINAL RENDERCollaging images and figures rendered the final product. I chose to highlight the
ethereal quality of the mausoleum.

UNIT ANALYSISThe drawing to the left documents the unit’s construction and design sequence. Iterations of the design led to the final hexagon form. The space to the right is one of many constructed from the versatile units.

CAD & FURNITURE
During my previous co-ops and study semesters, I have become proficient in AutoCAD. My co-op experiences have allowed me to research and specify multiple furniture companies including Haworth, Steelcase, DWR, Allermuir, Coalesse, and Fritz Hansen.

AXON & SECTIONSThese views of the Half House demonstrate my ability to model a circle, triangle, and rectangle. Appropriately cut sections allow for interesting views of the construction. Extensive site and environment analysis helped me place the building.

WORKPLACE OF THE FUTUREThis studio project included researching industry trends, furniture design, and rendering office spaces. After visiting multiple furniture vendors and manufacturing centers, I selected trends that reflect the technology of tomorrow. Using these key ideas, I created a dynamic and mobile furniture system for tomorrow’s office space. I then took these pieces and rendered them within a sustainable space (next page).
