W A T E R F R O N T DISTRICT B E R L I NThis massive urban redevelopment is lo-cated within the city center of Berlin, Ger-may. The project entailed a complete re-development of the site, providing all the necessary programs for a completely self-sufficient environment. This old, unused rail-yard sits north of Berlin’s main train station, Berlin Hauptbahnhof. The site is approxi-mately 50 hectares long and features a ca-nal running along the eastern border, and an elevated rail line on the western border.

T H EMOVING I M A G E C I N E -M A T H E KContinuing to develop the Waterfront Dis-trict Berlin, I choose to focus on one of the main entertainment areas on the southern end of the site. Creating a new entrance and plaza for the existing Hamburger Bah-nhof Contemporary Museum of Art, and developing a building for cinema was the main focus. The Moving Image Cinemathek not only provides main theater space for film, but exhibit space, and personal resi-dences for cinema artists. Creating a lively entertainment area that facilitated many different means of watching films, looking at art, and socializing was key in the design.

PILLSBURY C R O S S -I N GR E T R E A TPillsbury Crossing is located just outside of Manhattan, Kansas, and not only is it secluded and quiet, but features an expansive creek. The goal of the retreat was to provide a relax-ing, unique and enjoyable experience within the natural setting. The site has both gradual and steep level changes that allowed for site integration, and the separation of public and private realms. The use of natural materials, as well as varying effects of lighting was in di-rect response to the immediate surroundings.

EGYPTOL-O G I S T S S T U D YThis private hideaway, study, and gallery for an Egyptologist is located just across the river in downtown Memphis, Tennes-see. The goal of the project was to carve two limestone blocks to form spaces for reading, writing, entertaining and display-ing artifacts. Inspiration was grounded in Egyptian progression and directional move-ment found throughout Egyptian culture and design. Varying degrees of enclosure throughout the two blocks creates a separa-tion between the public and private realms.

T H E CUBICLEThe cubicle is a desk, computer work-station, and storage unit all in one; con-structed with Baltic birch plywood, and red laminated FinnForm. The cubicle mani-fested from a desire to create a com-pact, moveable desk, with an accompa-nied chair allowing for plenty of storage.

T H E S O L A RH O U S EThe Kansas State University Solar House Proj-ect for the Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C., was a design + build project. Fifth and third year architecture students, as well as faculty, collaborated to create a unique and efficient house. The Solar House featured cozy interior rooms, ample sun-shaded exteri-or spaces and was completely self-sufficient.
