Curriculum Vitae

Anne Spencer trained initially at the Julian Ashton Art School part-time for two years and then with Graeme Inson for another two years part-time in the mid 1980s. She has attended intensive week-long residentials held by prominent artists Judith White and Stephen Harvey of the National Art School. She has also enjoyed Terri Butterworth as mentor and private teacher over the last eight years. Newport Artworks acts as her primary gallery, featuring her as one of their select group of Artists, since 2005. Additionally, Anne has exhibited at Charles Hewitt Gallery, Strawberry Hills Gallery and Serendipity Gallery Katoomba. Anne has sold artworks both in her native Australia and further abroad by way of exhibitions and through commissioned pieces. Her work locates itself in an abstract/semi- representational realm; concentrating on expression through colour, movement and the forms she interprets from her subject matter.

Artist’s Statement

I like oil paint, colour, brush strokes and movement in my work. I paint the forms, shapes, patterns and lines that I see and feel, abstractly. I like to build a form sculpturally with paint and its application. Painting for me is also about being brave, confident and free; about trusting yourself to fix problems when they arise as your work develops. What grows out of an original idea can become quite different as issues of balance, colour, tone, shape, form and line are solved. I love the challenges of experimentation. Painting is my obsession and my escape. It is also my joy. As you look at my paintings I hope that you, too, will experience some of this joy.

Gallery Statement “ Anne has been

exhibiting with Newport Artworks Gallery since May 2004. Anne’s work is in high demand since she first showed with the gallery. Her first exhibition Luminosity, in November 2005 was a sell out of 24 paintings, securing sales from previous catalogues as well as a list of commissions.

Her work is semi-representational with strong influences from the abstract expressionists. She has studied & shared studios with artists such as Terri Butterworth, Judith White & Graeme Inson”.
