FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: SEPTEMBER 3, 2013 Research: Cell Phone Rings Impact In-Class Performance

CINCINNATI, OHIO – Researchers at Xavier University of Ohio confirmed the

hypothesis that cell phone rings, when heard in class, greatly affect students’ ability to

comprehend classroom material. The study was conducted using the experience of 71

undergraduate college students who were exposed to ringing and non-ringing

environments in class.

The controlled classroom watched in silence while the students took notes over a

video they were to be tested over. Meanwhile, students in the ringing classroom condition

had their video interrupted by two cell phone rings at 5 seconds each, both at

predetermined times during the presentation.

After the students watched and took notes on the video content they were given a

comprehensive multiple-choice test over the material. Compared to the group in the

controlled, quiet classroom, the ones subject to the disruptive rings performed

significantly worse.

“Participants in the ringing condition were less likely to have recorded pertinent

test information for disrupted test items than participants in the control condition,”

Professor Shaye Worthman, a researcher who carried out the study, says of the findings.

These findings could have major implications for in class policies concerning cell

phone use.

“If professors disseminate the results of this and future studies to students, it

might provide an incentive, specifically a simple means of preventing impaired academic

performance, for the students to regulate their use,” says Xavier professor Christian M.

End.

Brian Lewis Sports Reporter New York Post 1211 Avenue of the Americas New York, NY 10036-8790 Mr. Lewis: As you know, the people of New York love their sports teams. Whether they cheer for the Jets, Yankees or Giants, New Yorkers have a passion for sports that is unmatched throughout the world. But what about the major sporting events happening outside of the big apple? Often times New Yorkers go uninformed about many of the important and exciting sports games going on around the world. We would like to change that. The Africa Cup of Nations, started in 1956, has grown to be one of the most highly esteemed soccer tournaments in the world. Hosted in the beautiful country of South Africa, we believe this event has much to offer your readers. Coverage of this event will provide a break from all the local sports teams exposure and will give audiences a global perspective of sports. Benefits of covering The Africa Cup of Nations include: •A Break from the Ordinary: Hang up the cliché story on the Mets in exchange for an exciting look into the world of international sports. •Visit South Africa: Covering the event would mean attending the tournament in the beautiful country of South Africa. With its ultimate combination of nature, wildlife, culture, adventure and heritage, you may never leave. •An Opportunity to Educate Readers: Because not many New York reporters cover stories on The Africa Cup of Nations, you will have the chance to enlighten the readers of the Post on a subject they might know little to nothing about. Thank you for your time and consideration. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. Meg Jones, The Africa Cup of Nations Public Relations Team

Writing Sample 3- Guest Editorial

It all began when a Danish newspaper published a series of caricatures of the Prophet

Muhammad, some of them depicting him as a terrorist. Ever since this issue, anger

against Denmark and our brand is continuing to grow across the Middle East, despite an

apology offered by the newspaper.

Arla Foods is one of Europe's biggest dairy companies, and is being hit hard by a boycott

of Danish products across the region. We have found ourselves in the middle of a game

we have had no part in. After a 40-year process to build our business in the Middle East,

we have seen our relationship crumble in a matter of days. Already our organization has

had to lay off 100 of our hardest workers, because the boycott has decreased the demand

for our products. As an effort to put the hate to rest, Arla published many ads in Saudi

newspapers trying to disaffiliate our name from the blasphemous cartoons, but this has

done little good for public opinion so far.

We at Arla understand how the comics posted by the Danish paper could upset those in

Saudi Arabia, and those who identify with the Muslim religion. We are deeply

embarrassed that a newspaper in our home country has made such a careless and

insensitive mistake. We understand that the people who were upset by the comics are

deeply committed to doing something about the disrespect, but boycotting a company,

that had nothing to do with the scandal, is not the way to go about it. We would ask that

you please reconsider the boycott of all Danish products, because innocent people are

losing business.

Writing Sample 4- Talking Points

Suggested Talking Points:

Syndictive Element is planning an event on the island of Phuket in Thailand. It is

a huge event in that will be headlined by socialite Paris Hilton and is expected to

attract 300,000 people.

It is completely expected for the people and media of Phuket to be worried about

an event of this size, never having handled one before they do not know what to

expect. Aware of the concerns of the people, I assure there is no real harm that

can come from the upcoming Syndictive event.

With over 200 hotels in Phuket and more in the surrounding area, there will be no

trouble for guests to find accommodation for the weekend. We also plan on

setting up a campsite on private land near the concert venue, and are working with

other local hotels to house guests during the party.

The implications of an event drawing 300,00 people for the local businesses of

Phuket are purely beneficial. The economic stimulation the event guests will

create in the city could prove to have long-term benefits for overall income of

stores, hotels, restaurants and shopping malls of the city.

Celebrity endorsement and press coverage will attract tourists from Thailand,

Asia, Europe, Russia, China, Malaysia, Singapore and more, to the town in the

future.

For any security related concerns; Surin Beach will be entirely blocked off using

temporary fencing about two meters high. Also, Syndictive will be hiring the

Siam Guardian Services, an organization setting a benchmark in Thailand’s

Security industry with more efficient, cost effective, and proactive security

programs to secure the event.

As a company with a heart for giving back, Sydictive will also donate a minimum

of B200,000 to a local Surin kindergarten.

Creativity Sample 2- Austin City Limits work As an intern I was responsible for creating and scheduling social content, in order to effectively reach a combined digital audience over 200,000 people. Below are some of the tweets and other posts I was responsible for while on the job:

Page 10: Portfolio

  10

Creativity Sample 2- Austin City Limits Work (Continued) A tentative blog post: 5 things I’ve learned as an ACL intern: 1. You are not just an intern. I know you’re feeling like a lost little Bambi in the big bad world, but the people here are some of the nicest souls I’ve ever met. And although the word intern might have a negative connotation other places, it is not that way here. You won’t just be getting coffee. They ask your name, you get to go to meetings and sit at the big kid table and you are given a lot of responsibility. Managing the social, maintaining and creating content for the website, assisting with all aspects of production and even writing for the blog are all opportunities you are given. So own the title, but know that no one here is looking down on you. 2. You need a wide variety of skills. You need homemaker skillz: ironing, setting up food, organizing the dressing room, gathering towels, making sure people have what they need. Technology skillz: getting the stinking printer to print, working with the dell computers, Hootsuite and Facebook scheduling tools. People skillz: not being too awkward, dealing with divas. This leads me to number 3… 3. Be cool. Sometimes you’ll be walking 2 feet behind Juanes and you get the urge to run your fingers through his beautiful flowing locks and ask him to sing you to sleep… but you have to be cool man! You can’t just touch his hair. Life doesn’t work like that. So smile, wave, and move on, because the last thing you want to do it get caught snapchatting a picture of yourself with Emmylou Harris in the background or stealing a half eaten sandwich out of Emeli Sande’s trash can. 4. Late nights are the best nights. You get to the venue at 9 in the morning on taping days and you might not get to leave until 11 at night. Thanks right folks, when you do the math that’s a whopping 14-hour day. You are going to be far past loopy starting around 10. And while you’re waiting for the artist to finish in the dressing rooms, let the loopy in. Embrace the giggles and the delusion, they are your friends. That is the ONLY way you’re going to keep from crashing and burning. Some of my best laughs came from being absolutely exhausted and waiting to get into the dressing rooms. Riddles, word games and sing-alongs are all great loopy intern activities. 5. People are SO much more than their job titles. THIS. SO MUCH THIS. Ask people about themselves and you will be shocked at how cool and diverse everyone in this magical place is. You’ve got a director who used to save lives on the Gulf Coast, a driver with a sax album on iTunes (its called “Nough Said”you guys) and a hospitality manager who cut Jay-Z’z twizlers into one-inch increments. I can’t make this stuff up, and that is only three people. So take your time, ask people questions and learn what really makes ACL what it is: the people who give it life.
