Design Brief

Develop and build a seating element that uses practical manufacturing processes for construction.

Evaluate and repeat the construction process to produce a total of five identical stools. Think of a practicalbudget and design within those constraints. Consider variousmaterial options that may drive down costs, while not sacrificing quality.

Concept Development

The stool was given a oblong shape to create more visual interest. This model seemed too squat in its proportions, but closer to a resolution.

It proved unnecessary to have feet on every frame of the structure. The rectilinear shape needed more visual interest from the front view.

In this model the extra feet were removed. However, more frames could increase the seriality. The seat pan was still unresolved at this phase, as well as the structural shape.

Manufacturing process

The Little Monsters Collectionincorporates a unique material choice. The structure’s frame is cut from oriented strand board, while the seat pan comes from micro-fiber chenille car wash mits. The chenille creates a tactile experience for the user. Meanwhile, the playful shape and colors give each piece a unique personality.

Design Brief

Design and fabricate a stool that uses welded metal as its predominant structural material.

Welding is an industrial process that lends itslef well to mass production. Proper jigs and fixtures were produced to efficiently reproduce multiples of the stool. A second execution of the stool was reproduced in a restricted time frame of 45 min. Fabrication Process

Building custom jigs made it easier to assemble the stool while welding. However, clean up of certain weldsbecame difficult when fully constructed.

The final product shows a firm grasp of technique, skill, and knowledge of manufacturing processes. The three form seat pan has shown to scratcheasily, and may not be the ideal material choice for future stools. However, the stools unique shape lends itself to a multifunctional furniture piece.

Design Brief

Design and fabricate a wine rack using bent lamination processes. The wine rack must hold two glasses, and at least four bottles of wine.

Consider how wine is properly stored to insure quality of taste. Wine tasting requires the use of multiple senses. How can the wine taster’s experience be enhanced and more enjoyable through wine storage?

“Till the Last Drop” is an experiment in material manipulation. Creating the chain maille slings proved to be a very labor intensive task. Custom hardware was created for attachment to the bent plywood frame. The goal was to explore the design possibilities through bent lamination.

The completion of this project is satisfactory. The form emulates the smooth flow of wine into a glass. The lite visual weight of the chain maille floats the bottles within the structure. “Till the Last Drop” provides the user with appropriate wine storage while offering a unique conversation piece.

Design Brief

Cooking in a small kitchen can be a frustrating experience. Counter space becomes limited by appliances, cook books, and prep utensils. Develop a product that provides a temporary work surface for the kitchen.

Keep in mind the types of tasks that require more space within the kitchen. Also, consider cleaning and storage options for the product.

From survey responses, the ideal product needed to be simple for the user to operate.

The depth of the product’s surface only extended into the sink area 3 inches. This still allowed for use of the sink while Elevate was in place.

User testing gave valuable feed back for alterations later made for the final resolution.

Elevate is designed to extend the kitchen workspace at the sink. A cam locking mechanism attaches and supports the unit along the front edge of the sink. The workstation provides ample space for food prep, serving, and dish drying in small kitchen spaces.

Although sink basin depths vary, Elevate tries to accommodate the average depth of 8 inches. The appropriate materials could be customize able for those needing either a cutting board or serving station. The greatest challenge was designing a portable working product without taking up more space in tight quarters.

Top and bottom surfaces are designed to be removed for easier clean up and sanitization.

An optional tray provides the user with a quick and easy food prep attachment.

Design Brief

In preparation for Fort Pulaski’s sentinel anniversary re-design the visitor center exhibits. Focus on the entry, corner, and theatre walls. Budgets will be set by the employer and biweekly meetings will be held with the client for project updates and feedback.

Think about how an exhibit can bring in a broader visitor demographic than what currently exists.

The entry exhibit needed to have an immediate impact on the visitor. My design team decided on a large scale graphic of the breached fort. Separating the image into multiple layers provided depth, and enhanced the visitor’s initial experience.

The final exhibit scheme was developed with a large group of students from diverse majors. Working in this group required constant communication between design teams. Each student was given a task that fit their area of expertise. My focus was on initial design schemes and producing final construction documents.

Design Brief

This is a self proposed project to design an exhibit for public spaces. The exhibit will highlight outdoor activities in the state of California. The goal is to entice families to bring back the family road trip. Provide them with vacation alternatives during a time when vacation budgets are at the tightest.

The left panel provides an area for informational pamphlets from various parks and recreation facilities around the state. The center panel displays engaging facts about the natural landscape and wildlife.

The right panels point out popular areas of interest across the state. Beneath each photo travel time and distance is provided.

This exhibit is as a free standing structure, constructed with minimal materials, and expectations of flat pack shipping. Content is arranged to be visually interesting for both parent and child. The arched void creates an interactive element for small children while parents can access additional phamplet information on parks and recreation.

Through in depth research and interviews the funding for the exhibit could come from partner sponsorships. This project gave me a better understanding of working under a budget while not sacrificing quality or effectiveness of a design.
