Amherst, MA. Multi-family Housing

Our site was located on a ridgeline in northern Amherst, MA. The site was 20 acre and we were to design 8 units per acre, coming out to 160 units. We had to take into consideration the zoning setbacks and emergency access, the views off of the ridgeline and the considerable open space system that connects to the greater landscape the site is set into. In our design we created parking courts that were designed to fit enough parking for each unit with the least amount of impervious surface. Each court created a unique space using various paving patterns and gave the corresponding unit its own identification. My job in this project was to design layout of buildings and roads and pedestrian circulation along with rendering the plan and hand drawing the sections.

Town of Orange Ma. Greenway

In small groups we were asked to design a master plan for the town of Orange Massachusetts. The existing Millers River runs smack through the center of the downtown area. Creating great opportunity for the town to establish connections the water. Existing hiking trails to the north and south of the downtown lake connectivity. Our goal was to connect the town with their existing amenities and provide an overall Master plan. This included future sites for development and areas that are best suited for conservation. The sites for development were split up and each individual designed a space, whether it be a park, commercial development, or Streetscape. My job in this group was to gather peoples individual design spaces and put them all together in an organized presentation, which I would present to the town of Orange. I was also in charge of the GIS mapping and the maps you see here. These maps are a mix of GIS and Photoshop.

Stockbridge Road Corridor

The University of Massachusetts

Amherst is one of the oldest schools

in the state. The campus has

undergone numerous expansions,

dating back to the turn of the

century. Through these expansions,

a sense of unity and relationships

were lost between the differences

in design principles at the given

time. Stockbridge road, which runs

through the heart of campus, was

once planned to be the center of

the university. In order to bring a

new sense of character back to the

corridor, the road is being converted

into a pedestrian walk that connects

vital ends of the campus. Our

design created meeting spaces for

seeing faces in key places along

this corridor. We placed these

where there were strong east west

pedestrian circulations cutting across

the north south Stockbridge road

corridor. Along with strong ties to

the surrounding building uses.

Residential Garden

The site for this residential property

was in Leveret MA. set back from

the road and surrounded by forest.

When building the house the site was

cleared and the house was plopped

right in the center with no care for

the forest around it. Speaking to the

owners of the property they were

not too enthusiastic with the fact the

forest has been ripped away from

the house. In my design I took that

greatly into consideration and my

concept was to pull the forest to the

house on all four sides in an orchard

arrangement. This created four

open spaces one for a garden, an

open space for the young children,

the driveway and parking, and an

entrance to the house.

The Schuler Residence is the home I

lived in until I was about 23 years old.

It is the place where my knowledge

of the landscape could be seen

and realized first hand. It is where I

could experiment with all aspects of

landscape. Slowly growing our plant

collection year after year, splitting

the perennials, and keeping shrubs

trimmed to create the patchwork

of fauna. One of the main projects

was the fire pit and fountain. Using

the old rubble wall stone I gave it

new life as a fire pit to warm you up

during the cold New England nights.

Still having the grade change issue

a timber wall was created with a

ranging size of timbers used to create

a pattern mvore interesting then the

classic timber tie wall. This is also the

structure that holds the weight of the

catch basin for the water feature. The

stones have long slits cut to direct the

water to flow from stone to stone.

The southing sound from this effect

blankets the noise the busy main road

creates.

Sketching - (in Germany)

An experience of a lifetime, traveling

to Germany for spring break my

senior year of college in 2008. Went

with high expectations and only

the weather disappointed. For ten

days our Professor Jack Ahern and

20 fellow students and I traveled

all around Germany walking over 20

miles a day seeing, experiencing, and

sleeping all over Germany. During

our travels we each kept sketchbooks

scribbling down whatever we could

when we had time to stop. Some

sketches are from the Jewish Museum

in Berlin, Landshaft Park in Duisburg,

and Sanssouci in Potsdam.

The Webster Residence located in

Marblehead, MA is an old Victorian

style home sitting up high on the

rocks over looking the Atlantic

Ocean. There were many phases

to updating the outdoor spaces

surrounding the house. Working with

Martin Landscape Service I built and

managed these phases. They were

designed by Lauren Lautner of For

Seasons. The first was a side patio off

the kitchen serving as a buffer to the

newly built home immediately to the

south. The Designer chose a volcanic

stone from Italy and created two

raised planters with a fountain at its

center. In the second phase the back

yard had no definition. A circular

planter with statue is the focal point

for the space and offers a great view

from the reading porch. Sailored City

Hall Pavers define the Paths edge and

separates the peastone path from the

surrounding plants.

Memorial Design

A call for entries in Alexandria, VA.

was in search for a memorial design

for the Contraband’s and Freedmen’s

Cemetery. The site was established

in 1864 as a burial ground for African

Americans who fled slavery. More

than 1,800 people are buried on

the site. Many of the graves have

been uncovered from archeologists

but many have been lost due to the

desecration of the sacred grounds.

There have been structures built over

the years and even the removal of soil

for brick-making.

Through our design there voices are

heard. We created three rooms

representing Pre-civil, Civil, and Post-

civil times. Interwoven through the

room are personal accounts of the

contraband’s and freedmen. Creating

a focal point within the core room the

walls rise up where the 1,800 names

of the interred are engraved. There

is then a journey through the woods

where there is a final contemplative

space where people are left to

envision a future in which everyone is

heard.

The Hall Residence Located in Nahant, MA is a 2-3 acre property. The site sits on a hillside abutting a private Beach. During the homes renovation the surrounding landscape was left untouched. The backyard was disturbed when the homeowners put a large water holding tank in the ground that was used to catch the water run off from the roof and reused for properties irrigation. This left a blank slate for designer Lauren Lautner of For Seasons to create spaces tucked into the hillside with views to the ocean. The first area we tackled was the large patio seen here. I was in charge of managing and building this patio made of Goshen stone. Some of the slabs were five to seven feet long and ranged from four to eight inches thick. This patio wraps around a large existing pine. We also planted thyme in between the stones and the plant beds filled with perennials to define the edges. Coming down the stairs or out the back door you land on the transition slab where the sweeping edge of the stones define the lawn.
