2010 - Student dwellings in Champs-sur-Marne

Transversal section First and second fl oor plans

South elevation

The project of 14 students dwelling sits on a parcel in the City of Champs-sur-Marne (in the suburbia of Paris), on a ground characterized by a fairly steep slope and its north / south orientation. It is therefore asked to consider the repetition of a module that is as eff ective and as comfortable as possible.

The project is initiated by the various activities of a student and its major needs. Thus we can identify a division into four specifi c areas. First, the entry of the apartment opens onto a small living room and kitchen. Then one reaches on the bathroom which comes to create a separation between the sleeping area, rather “dark”, and the working area, which is widely opened to the outside by a large window. A glass door gives access to the terrace of the fl at.

The openings are considered according to the orientation of accommodation : the terraces of the lower fl ats open to the south, so an overhang of the upper fl ats creates a solar protection against strong sunlight. On the other hand, the upper fl ats’ terraces need a considerable amount of light as they are looking north.

“In Abstracto” is an exercise where we were asked

to think about the notion of comfort in housing

without taking account of surroundings.

The points I chose to develop :

- a bearing core we can go around

- a light structure that creates fl exible spaces

- through appartments.

N

This is of confronting the theoretical standpoint of comfortable housing to the practical realities of a site.

The site is a plot of 1165 sqm located at the corner of Boulevard Bois-le-Prêtre and Pierre Rebière Street in the 17th arrondissemenr of Paris, at the foot of the Tour du Bois-le-Prêtre, rehabilitated by Lacaton / Vassal.

It was asked to develop a project of 40 dwellings.

2009 - Workshops for a furniture factory

Plan du R+1

The building is organized by a partition both horizontal and vertical. While the ground fl oor houses all the workshops, the fi rst fl oor is composed of both offi ces that line the western side, as well as services accessible by the entrance on the south façade. The entrance to the fi rst fl oor allows a direct access to the factory from the workshops.Marked by the structure, we also fi nd the partition at roof level. Indeed, three diff erent types of roof help to identify each part from the outside.First, the large workshop is covered of sheds that allow an infl ux of homogeneous light throughout the workshop.

On the other hand, the gabled roof that covers the hallway and offi ces helps indicate directions. Here the roof amplifi es the notion of overlooking since it leads the gaze to the ground. Finally the entrance is covered by a fl at roof, it shows the neutrality of the place where anyone can go.If the roof of the building highlights the contrasts found in the activities that are hosted by the workshop the choice of materials, in turn creates the unity of the building. The metal posts admit a light and discreet structure while the wooden roof brings a warmer light on all the concrete walls of the workshops.

2011 - A boiler house in Gennevilliers

This project that took most of my time during my fi srt stay with GD-LC is a competition launched by the CPCU (Parisian company of Urban Heating) in order to build a boiler house in Gennevilier’s harbour (north-east of Paris).Litwin, an engineering group, chose LWA (Luc Weizmann Architect) to help them working the architectural side of the boiler and allow better site planning. By lack of time, LWA has himself chosen GD-LC to handle the graphic work andassist in its deliberations.

Concerning the other side of the city, the entry is completly diff erent. When we come from the forest, the fi rst elements we discover on the north are the the major industrial buildings preventing the apprehension of the whole city.On the south, the detached houses spread discreetly behind a vegetation barrier. The division noth/south is i ncreased by the presence of the secondary road.

Perception of the city from its surroundings

Urban typologies in the city

The entrance of Trilport, from the forest (3)

The entrance of the city, from the bridge (1)

Trilport from the heights of the village of Fublaines (5)From Montceaux-lès-Meaux (4)

From Meaux, Trilport is quite invisible since it is situated in a valley fl oor and and covered by a row of trees. However, on the bridge, the city appears, noticeable thanks to the steeple of the curch and the traditional houses. It makes quite a welcoming entry. The Marne river creates a respiration separating Meaux from Trilport and distinguishing them from each other.

The mayor’s project Our planning strategy

Recreate an entrance to the city

- Install the ecodistrict at the entry of the city

- Stagger the frame

- Boot a greenbelt and green outskirts

- Revegetate the north of the county

- Reduce the risks related to the secondary road

- Create a south peripheral way for local residents

- Create a second area of convenience stores
