AUD 414 Studio: Architecture and the CityPark + Park(ing) TowersUCLA Department of Architecture and Urban DesignProfessor : Roger ShermanFall 2010

The project cultivates the importance of the relationship of architecture to its context through program. As one of the densest areas in Los Angeles, Koreatown’s lack of public space is conspicuous and provides no relief from the urban condition. The project functions to transpose surface parking occupying valuable real estate into parking towers that provide even more parking, alleviating two problems at once, the lack of both parking and public space. Further, the injection of public space onto the surface parking of the business strip malls provides a common ground, blurring the distinction of a predominantly Latino residential community surrounding a largely Korean business community. The new surface parks, in close proximity to businesses and residences, encourage a new level of walkability. The towers, in addition to more than 600 parking spaces, provide increased, but balanced, density with 60/40 residential rental to technology center with a significant commercial use. The increased density is not only alleviated by the newly created surface parks but also activates the parks in a way foreign to the suburban nature of the city. While the project responds directly to the unique conditions of an already dense area, it has the potential to act as a prototypical urban solution for implementation in several areas inside and around Los Angeles. The project, through the inclusion of its own significant public park space is equally effective in areas with no existing public space and areas with latent parkland as in Koreatown.

The proposed parking towers will supply public parkings for the neighborhood, allowing the surface parking lots to become public green space, and introduce a new level of walkablity.

AUD 401 Research Studio: Sheet Logics Speculations on the Organizational and Cosmetic Potential of SheetsUCLA Department of Architecture and Urban DesignProfessor : Heather RobergeSpring 2012

The project envisions how the use of sheet logics at architectural and urban scales can offer a vibrant and compelling alternative to the current vision for redevelopment of the Union Station site. Inspired by study of fashion design and garment making techniques, we aim to challenge the architectural tropes of figure-ground master planning and the increasingly predictable impact of digital modeling on material expression. In the design of their garments, fashion designers are simultaneously managing silhouette, materiality, pattern and sidedness, assembly seams, and the surface area of sheet materials; our ambition is to inherit their artistic dexterity by reinterpreting their processes for architectural purposes. By understanding the sensibilities of fashion designers towards issues of drape, layering, transition, and termination, we gain new perspective and confidence to address design problems within our own discipline. AUD 401 Advanced Topic Studio : CompressionsLos Angeles Small Lot Sub-divisioin Ordinance HousingUCLA Department of Architecture and Urban DesignProfessor : Jeffrey InabaFall 2011

The studio’s intention is to embrace the distortion that arises out of compressing or scaling down a functional object, and to take the abnormality of its form as the point of departure for design. The end goal is to produce controlled anomalies in which the form seamlessly integrates reduced and normative elements and establishes new relationships of proportion.

Cassa Condo-Hotel Tower New York, New YorkEnrique Norten / TEN Arquitectos 2005 -2006

Located two blocks north of Bryant Park in Mid-town Manhattan, the Cassa Condo-Hotel Tower will strike a prominent profile in the Manhattan skyline, distinguishing itself from the conventional glass and stone edifices surrounding it. Its delicate proportion is unique among its stout neighbors as a result of the constricted site where it sits and its slender floor plates. The resulting form creates an obelisk marking its location among the chorus of the midtown skyline.

The challenge was to combine the very private functions of the Luxury Residences with the public functions of the Boutique Hotel, Restaurant and Lounge allowing them to co-exist while functioning independently. The result is a sequence of fluid spaces that converge at the Lobby, merging interior and exterior, intimate and urban.

DEPARTMENT STOREHYPERMARTHOTELICERINKCINEMA

The design concept is based on the idea of a river. Like a riverbed the retail street is carved out of the building complex. Like large boulders, the department store, the hypermart and the entertainment complex frame the riverbed. Like water the roof of the retail street flows between the banks of the shopfronts. The space of the retail street forms an imaginary continuation of Central Park and its river.

Tel Aviv Residential Tower is located at the northern border of Neve-tzedek, the old town of Tel Aviv. The curvilinear form of the tower is inspired by the curves of Tel Aviv Bauhaus architecture. The massing is broken in two so that no facade is completely in shadow at any given time. The facades facing Neve-tzedek are blended to the residences there, which are mostly short buildings with vertical windows along narrow streets. The thirty story tower includes four duplex units with garden terrace, a three level penthouse on the top, and lobby, spa, café, gym, and pool deck on the first three levels.

Archipelago 21, the Yongsan International Business District, is located within dense urban fabric of the city of Seoul. The site is broken into “islands” that are distinct forms that together, like an archipelago, create a composition together as a whole in the landscape.
