Let’s talk design

I would like to begin with my belief that we are living in an ever-changing world.Human are a highly interactive and adaptive creature by nature

therefore, spatially, I have no interest in the concept of symbolism in spacebut rather space as just space - in its purest form - as a condition

that comprises of endless human acitivites and events. It must not be a limitation but rather

an active framework that perform along side our behaviour. It needs to be what its suppose to be. In a sense,

it is definitely about freedom, and eventually, an optimistic atmosphere.

ISSUE

W ith the current human condition and lifestyle that is ever-changing. The

usage of spatial typology like chalet has shift its direction from hospitality towards recre-ational purpose. However, with the outdated architecture, its purpose could be fullfilled only with a large group of people, causing it to detach itself from the corresponding con-text. Overtime, the space shape itself like other hospitality typology, (eg. hotel) which causes monotony architecture that contain others meaning rather than expressing its own. Fur-thermore, the selected chalet is located in the context of Sentosa, a context that is heavily ac-tive and vibrant. THEORYDeconstructivism is introduced to question the conventional method of use of the chalet and distablise the autonomy of the building, inscribing the site to its urban fabric. Through freespace, the notion of singularity and dicta-tion could be reconceptualise and architecture inturn become an on-going process rather than an end or beginning. Emerging as a

framework, freespace become design of con-ditions that perform along side human, creat-ing a heterotopia, an orchestration of human/non-human activities.

“freespace is without predetermined programs of use, but whose strong forms demanded the invention of new programs. A space that will the inhabitant to inhabit a habit new way of

living.” - Lebbeus Wood

CONTEXTChalet on Siloso beach - Sentosa Surrounded by Wavehouse, iFly, Megazip, beach clubs, etc. Siloso beach is popular among youth and young adults.

HYPOTHESISThe project aims to explore a new typology of Chalet that fits to the current lifestyle of its inhabitants. A chalet as a pleasurable mean in-stead of hospitality or rooms. Perhaps in the future we could use chalet base on its offered activity.

W ith the rapid urbanisation in Sin-gapore, Pulau Ubin, Singapore’s

last untouched island is on the verge of becoming the next victim for urbanisation. Since the architecture typology of the western will only do harm to Singapore’s heritage and culture which could be found on this very last island; the project aims to reinforced and aug-ment the “chalet”, Singapore-typology of hotel for gathering.

The project make use of the deconstructiv-ism theory, to distablise and question the preconveived method of envelopment. First, it is important the question of method of use of Chalet. It is a space for pleasure over sleep. Second, Chalet should describe its own history and not become a duplication of hotels. Third, “unfinish” and “broken” architecture seek to

be a framework for inhabitant to activate fun and chao. Fourth, redefining the concept of wall and barrier, structure that vaguely suggest the in-between space of inside and outside. Fifth, the conventional quiet corridor is recon-figured to form a mainstreet, those of urban condition like the chaotic “pasar malam”. Six, the architecture is not autonomous object but an interpretation of its context; the connection of different pools to the lagoon create a con-tinueous waterscape, user moving from place to place never have to leave the pool of fun ever again. In addition, it is open to public use, multiplying the fun yet become a trail-zone for the chalet. Last, the primary program is freedom. Architecture is seen as a process that absorb the culture, not an end of a begining. Through “Silts” event must be able to happen anywhere at anytime.including sleep.

G reyhound is a fusion restaurant between Thai and Italian. Unlike

any other restaurant, it is a lifestyle brand that speaks of individualism. Their target customers group or subcultures are the cre-ative industry and young adult. Greyhound has never failed to appreciate how everything in Bangkok could be extremely chaotic, yet still goes and blend well together, simply put, Bhanu Inkwat noted

“It is a Beautiful Chaos”.

Multiplicity (space)In the idea of Beautiful chaos, it suggests the search for order in chaos. By introducing a new system to the building, the flexibility of the space expand as within the context of the space, chaos is known as multiplicity.

By generating multiplicity, there is no clear distribution of functions, as one functions overlap the other, it creates another incidential space.

Individualism (user)Most of the functions in the restaurant are blurred. It is when the spaces are left to the user to interpret that the space speak of the brand identity; individualism. It is when there is individualism(s) that there is conceptual chaos.

1) Once step inside, contrast between solid black wall and glass staircase which offer a sneak peak into the kitchen direct user to use the staircase. Once on the staircase, one would realise the idea of being into the kitchen as this is where public is cut directly into the private. Standing on top of the chiefs, the staircase serves as another function as a “view point” to the user suggesting the idea of multiplicity in functions.

2) As the staircase was made wider, the Playhound area turns into a a platform for the user to interact and exchange idea. There is no defined number of seating, the space is left to the user to interpret. The seating is position in the way that offer the view of the exterior greeneries. Moreover, sunlight are brought into the building to balance off the chaotic form.

3) Where the section get closer to the user, and position along the Playhound, the 2nd level dining area offer a more private dining experience.

4) As greyhound has no headquarter or office that act as their root in Singapore, the Proposal include a retail/headquarter. Taking advantage of the circulation by overlapping the existing function with a runway, adding value to the brand itself as this offer a new experience of fashion walk.

T he project brief calls for a design of liv-ing and working environment for a pro-

fessional in the creative industry. This unit will stand amongst other such units as port of a creative belt in a conservation area in Singapore

A wooden toy maker who is a migrant from Germany to Singapore. He would need a balance between living and work, at the same time being able to sustain himself and able to adapt to the new environment.

Unlike other carpenter, the wooden toymaker work in his own special way; Progression back-ward. Given a piece of wood, they would start to subtract each of its portion from the outside (corner) to the inside (core). Through the idea of outside to the inside, the approach taken is exterior to the interior. The core which would turn into the green space for the building will also organise the space to be inward looking, creating a private retreat for the client himself.

From the 5-foot way to the retail section of the site, the blur boundary between the passer-by around the neighbourhood and the work-shop (Left) + drying room (Right) of the toy maker. The composition of the view is further enhance by the greenery and natural sunlight which act as the backdrop. At the entrance, the idea of the subtraction could be experience as one walks through the long narrow entrance walk-way. The walk-way connect the core (green space) where work and living is circling around to the outside. At the core, the sunken plane bring the user close to the nature, as where one sit, they are on the same level as the ground. The sunken plane is an ideal place for the owner to welcome his guest / clients. Lastly, the bedroom which is canterlivered to the core of the house where the trees are located - enhance the idea of being closed to nature. Responding to the sunpath, when the morning sun rises, the shadow of the trees act as the extension of the nature into the room, animating the whole space.

T he 48 hours competition by Singapural Design Week design brief calls for a

“revamp-mation” of the given showroom and its branding under the 48 hours timeline. The theme of the competition is co-exist. The pro-cess involes designing, meeting the owner of the brand, treating him as our own client and fabrication.

AcanthusThe brand given was Acanthus. Acanthus is a wooden classic furniture brand which has its long history of 18 years being locally made. They are specialise with their materials and craftmanship. Their furniture have been dis-play in the parliament as well as the president’s houses because of its lavishness and extrava-gance.

The initial idea started of with observing how houses, even up to date, still contains clas-sic furniture like Acanthus. We realised that furniture not only define the space, but the time itself which link to the proposal of the co-existance between the classic and contem-porary as well as the past and the present. We have selected tunnel as a medium of com-minication that suggest linking and bridging. Moreover, the material choice were wooden stick to represent the time frames. The tunnel itself cuts through the plan of the showroom, enveloping itself from the outside to inside and outside again, at times low and sometimes so high that it got lost into the ceiling. These gestures are a symbolic representation of un-certainity and fluctuation as in Acanthus 18th years history being locally made, they have had to gone through various hardship and struggle with the economic cost.

T he project hopes to re-discovered what has been lost from the cities; Seoul and

Singapore. The new perspective was brought about by those who have not been familiarise with it while those who have, go on a jour-ney to reinvestigate their understanding and reconnect their relationship with the city.

Respond : An expression of a helpless traveller who could only stand in disappointment as he

watches the city being consumed by rapid ur-banisation, knowing well that his origin is one of the victims. Despite the seemingly impos-sible, he created the mechanic that hopes to fix the city; an indescribable form that attaches to the city, appear almost meaningless, it exists as a part of the city and never the creator of it.

it exists as a useless form, as an unknown intruder, as part of the city, never the creator.

“The bench consume too little material that it is suffering from anorexia”

T he bench inspiration is base on the mod-ern definition of being skinny. Due to

our cultural behaviour such as advertising, that indirectly imposed a negativity that skin-ny is the new pretty, and fasion is all about the thinnest and slimming body.

Constructed out of a thin aluminum sheet, the aim of the bench is to archieve the “anorexic ergonomic”. The skeletal bench held itself with

two pair of parallel aluminum rods that illus-trate the desirable slender pair of legs. To fur-ther express the long and slim leg, the struc-ture of bench is further increase in height, similar to activity like diet which may cause some discomfirt, the taller bench required a physical adaptation from the user to get up or lean on.

Lastly, Anorexic Bench is finish in Black, the colour that is too easily sterotyped as an “low-fat”.

T o question the preconceived idea of perfection which is believe to be

definite, true and stable. IM PERFECT reflect the concept that fashion is constantly revolv-ing and the oscillation of time brings about changes through out its history. IM PERFECT is a proof that style is all about subjectivity and preferences

Appliing the concept physically to the typical bench, the transformation through

osciallating enable the bench to reject its old identity. Dispite its imperfection which may refer close to being disfunctional. IM PER-FECT create a delusion in our understand of imperfection as it still function perfectly like a normal bench.

More over, as it inherent movement from osciallation into its form, the seemlingly “broken” bench present itself most clearly to the passer-by walking parallel to it.

modern visual identity that avoid the usual and maistream, but still convey the same message.

Also, to streghten the idea, we would like to propose “PETROOM” rather than “PETSHOP” as a surname of the place. This hope to communicate a more socialable aspect of the business.
