  • The wetlands and coastline of Gulf St Vincent are recognised amongst the most important in Australia for migratory and resident shorebirds. In addition to being listed by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area (IBA) the area has recently been nominated as an East Asian Australasian Flyway Network site of significance. Every summer over 15,000 migratory shorebirds, from pocket sized Red-necked Stints to giant Eastern Curlews leave their breeding grounds (up to 11,000km away!) and seek out the shores around Gulf St Vincent. Here they join our resident shorebirds who use the safe beaches and undisturbed wetlands and claypans of the region to raise their young. Join us for a morning with the birds at one of the premier natural shorebird sites in the state. When: Saturday, February 11, 2017 8:30am – field session 10:30 – morning tea 10:45 to 12:30 – theory session Where: Field session: Pt Clinton foreshore. Meet at Cnr Kurilla St. and the Parade. Optometrist Service

“Eye-Visit Optometry” is a mobile optometry service (kind of like the Eye Bus which used to visit around here years ago, if you remember that) They will be visiting Pt Wakefield and Balaklava, offering professional on-site eye health and vision services. Eye exams are bulk-billed, and a wide selection of prescription eyeglasses are available.

A notice which will be put up in the Doctors rooms at Pt Wakefield to advertise this service. The first visit to Pt Wakefield will be on Friday 3rd February with appointments commencing at

10am. It will depend on the support for the service, but they would like to make the visits a regular thing …. maybe once a month. The bus will be at the Doctors rooms, and all appointments are to be made through us, here at the doctors surgery in Balaklava ph. 8862 1444.

What is cricket? Cricket is quite simple. You have two sides, ours & theirs, one out in the field & one in. Each man in the side that’s in, goes out and when he is out, he comes in, & the next man goes in until he is out. Then, when they have all been in, and are all out, the side that’s been in, and are all out, the side that’s been in the field comes in, and the side that’s been in goes out and tries to get out those coming in. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. Then, when both sides have been in & out, including not outs, that’s the end of the game.

    It’s really very simple.

Birds of the Port Wakefield Area

from a book of the same name by Paul Taylor and Wikipedia Grey Shrike-Thrush Colluricincla harmonica

The call of the Grey Shrike-Thrush is an impressive whistle. As a general rule, plain coloured birds are good songsters and birds that are brightly coloured have mundane calls. (With every rule, of course, there are exceptions). Commonly found in most habitats including coastal vegetation. The grey shrike-thrush formerly commonly known as grey thrush, is one of the best-loved and most distinctive songbirds of Australasia.
