Warm up

What are the things that make something an animal?

Why are protists not animals?

Let’s Start at the Basics Phylum Porifera…

Sponges

Page 4: Porifera cnidariannotes

Symmetry… No symmetry;

(maybe radial)

No head

Page 5: Porifera cnidariannotes

How Do They Get Food?

No mouth, anus, or gut!

Filter feeders…

Reproduction…

Sexual (male and female)

May perform budding

Page 10: Porifera cnidariannotes

Live

Mostly in oceans

Some in freshwater

Page 11: Porifera cnidariannotes

Movement

Most do NOT move (sessile)

Some move VERY slowly

Page 12: Porifera cnidariannotes

Other

Means “pore bearing”

No nerves or cells to carry impulses

Page 13: Porifera cnidariannotes

Some are very SMALL;

Others are so LARGE a person could fit INSIDE!!!!!

Sponges . . . Strange But True

Re-form Regenerate Create a new

sponge from a piece.

Page 15: Porifera cnidariannotes

So…

Why are sponges animals?

Page 16: Porifera cnidariannotes

They

Can’t make their own food

Eat other organisms

Hydra Feeding…

To eat, they expand their mouth around their prey and engulf it!

Hydra Feeding…

They have a gut cavity and a mouth. Some are predators others are filter

feeders.

Hydra reproduction:

Cnidarians can reproduce sexually.Hydra most often bud, which is asexual reproduction.

They may have 4 buds at 1 time!
