AspirationThe history of building is a slow evolution from mass to membrane, from heavy stone structures to luminous, lightweight and environmentally responsible structures. The investigation of new light and fl exible technologies is at my core.

I desire to explore lightness as a visual, physical and sustainable approach, using a minimum of materials to impact our planet, using a physical lightness of form and its visual effect of light on structure. We seek to build responsive structures that contain spaces which inspire, a place where building, nature and people can meet.

Philosophy of ConstructionInnovative approaches to construction and economical means of expression drive my approach in form making. I take a constructive versus a purely compositional approach — and seek architectural responses that are grounded in the realities of program and construction methods. Physical properties, sustainability, structural needs, climate, and the use of light weight and renewable materials are all integrated into our innovative approach to design. A stronge desire to integrate construction issues throughout every phase of a project, understanding that each technology has a vocabulary of its own. Being well vesered with both architecture and engineering , allows me the fl exibility to deliver projects on time and budget, and avoids value engineering late in the process.

SustainabilitySustainability is part of a total approach to design. For so many designers “green” design is a simplistic approach to play up one aspect of sustainability. My commitment runs deep. I have developed strategies for rain water collection, integrated solar panels and solar shading on past projects. I take an integrated approach to sustainability that includes structure, building systems, response to site, microclimate, orientation, façade designs, and materials.

Public Life and Urban Culture My work is concerned with the life and culture of each community in which we build. Aspire to combine cutting edge design with community outreach. Memorable forms create iconic defi nitions of public space. My designs support overlapping programs to encourage the greatest diversity of users. Integrating landscape and buildings, streetscapes and canopies, open spaces and performance spaces, to stimulate and encourage public interaction.

A New Facility that is an Act of Civic Responsibility and an Artistic & Engineering Feat

In 2008, a 45,000 square foot state-of-the art performance pavilion was gifted to the people of Sun Valley Idaho by Earl and Carol Holding. While Sun Valley Co. owns the facility, the Sun Valley Symphony will have exclusive, uninterrupted use of the pavilion for its summer seasons. Wally Huffman, the Sun Valley Company General Manger said, “The initial design called for a facility that could be used year round, but the cost of such a structure would have been too prohibitive.

For this project, architectural fi rm Ruscitto, Latham and Blanton (RLB) of Ketchum, Idaho played the local supportive role developing some of the

construction documents and overseeing the pavilion’s construction.

Carving the hillside to create the slope for the amphitheatre, FTL designed berms on the upper perimeter to allow better viewing for the audiences, while reducing surrounding traffi c noise during rehearsals and performances. I

The Music Pavilion houses a 6,000 square foot stage under a steel truss proscenium arch that supports the permanent horn-like acoustical shell. The shell is made of a tensile steel cable net over which a wood shingled roof is

mounted. On top of the shiplap douglas fi r wood, a waterproofi ng membrane is attached and a copper fl at seam roof provides the top layer. This construction is the fi rst of its kind in North America utilizing a tensile system which is able to take the 100 lbs per sq ft snow load of this famous ski resort.

The proscenium arch soars 70-feet and is anchored by an immense foundation consisting of 150 truckloads of concrete. The foundation is designed to make the structure extremely resistant to forces of weather and earthquakes.

The arch was constructed in a Washington State shipyard and shipped to Sun Valley in three separate pieces, then welded together on site.

By design, the stage and amphitheatre demonstrates acoustical excellence, sporting a highly engineered sound system. It seamlessly transitions from large spans of hi-tech material into the slopes’ retaining walls which are surfaced with 750 tons of travertine rock from Italy. Other structures with similar travertine rock include the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the Lincoln Center in New York and the Coliseum in Rome.

The pavilion emerges from the terrain in the form of two stone retaining walls, rising to its apex to create an intimate sense of place, then melding visually with the natural landscape. “Architecturally, this will make statement in mountain towns, a harmonious community development,” said Sun Valley Co. General Manager Wally Huffman.

FTL was retained by LVMH and Peter Marino Architect to devlop the iconic sun shade skin for their “Island Maison”, at Sands Marina Bay, Singapore. The project is located in a fl oating “Crystal Pavilion”, designed by Safdie Architects, an asymentric building with irregularly angled facades, sited one degree north of the equator.

FTL’s challange was to create a sunshade system, that acts a backdrop for the stunning interior designed by PMA. The result is a design that is a seamless intersection of aesthetics, rigorous analysis and fl awless function. Our innovative design is a fi rst of it’s kind: a frameless, ultra fl at and fully tensioned modular panel system, that covers all 25,000 SQM of interior facades and roof. Key design considerations include sunshading, UV protection, natural illumintion, acoustics, visual control and lighting enhancment, all crafted within a strict minimalist aesthetic.

LV at Sands Marina Bay opened to critical acclaim and is considered one of the must see desinations in Singapore.

PORTFOLIO: THE ROSA PARKS TRANSIT CENTERA New Facility to Revitalize downtown

FTL created a bus terminal which defines space, washed with day lighting, harvesting rain water and transforming infrastructure into sculpture.

The new Rosa Parks Transit Center includes a passenger terminal and roof canopy covering a drop off and outdoor waiting area which will play a pivotal role in providing alternate means of public transportation to the greater Detroit area. The project brief was simple: a permanent roof structure, to withstand harsh weathers, durable, easy to maintain, inexpensive and unique.

Parson Brinkerhoff, a pioneer in transportation facilities, collaborated with FTL Design and Engineering Studio to develop the design.

FTL developed a design approach that uses flowing canopies to create an active visual space and naturally day light space which challenges the conventional notion of roof where the membrane both hovers 50 ft in space, and in other areas brought to ground and to act as a giant water collector. To create rhythm, the proposed scheme was broken down into seven repetitive bays, each approximately 110’ long and 50 ft wide. Each bay is comprised of two trusses, an A frame and fabric which is pulled down, transforming the roof into a wall and encompassing a courtyard.
