• The decadal growth rate is a vital part of Census operations.

• This gives an overview of the percentage of total population growth in a particular decade. Hence, it is termed as "Decadal Growth Rate".

• The decadal growth rate of for the entire population of India is 17.64 % (2001 to 2011).• The population in India grew by 181 million.• The decadal growth rate of Punjab is 13.73% (2001 to 2011)• The population in Punjab grew by 3.35 million i.e. 33,45,237

URBANISATION:-Movement of people from rural to urban area.There is a change from agriculture to non- agriculture occupation.

Adoption of urban traits and attributes.

• Comparisons have been made between the Rural & Urban

• Some view them as opposites.

• Others talk about Rural-Urban continuum.

•The rapid process of urbanization through the establishment of industries, urban traits and facilities has decreased the differences between villages and cities.

• State population has increased to 3.6 times• Urban population increased to 11 times, rural population increased to 2.6 times• Urbanization increased from 12.39% to 37.49%• Number of Urban Centers increased from 76 to 217• Urban Growth Rate (25.72%) is 3 times more than Rural Growth Rate(7.52%)

SEX RATIO IN PUNJABThe total number of females per 1000 males is 893 in 2011. (876 in 2001). Haryana is 877 & Himachal is 974 (2011 Census)

The figures are better in rural area than the urban area. It is 907 is rural population and 875 in urban population, whereas in census 2001 it was 890 (Rural) & 875 (Urban)

The below 06 years Child Sex Ratio in Punjab is 846 (2011 census), it was 798 in 2001 census.

In India below 06 years Child Sex Ratio is 914 in 2011 census, it was 927 in 2001 census

• All the Districts have witnessed an increase in sex ratio, except Bathinda and Mansa

• For Bathinda ratio has declined to 865 (in Census 2011) as against 870 in Census 2001.• Mansa has not shown any change and it is same as that in previous Census i.e. 880

• Nawan Shehar(SBS)(879), Jalandhar(874) and Kapurthala (872) have shown the highest increase in child sex ratio. • Tarn Taran has lowest child sex ratio (819).

In 1901 the population density of India was as low as 77 persons per sq. km.

It steadily increased in each decade to reach 382 persons per sq. km. in 2011

• ‘Density of Population’ is defined as the number of persons per square kilometer.

• India accounts for a 2.4 percent of the world surface area of 135.79 million square Kms. • On the other hand, it supports and sustains 17.5 per cent of the world population. • In contrast, the USA accounts for 7.2 per cent of the surface area with only 4.5 per cent of the world population.

• The highest growth rate of population has been in (SAS Nagar)Mohali, Patiala and Tarn Taran, districts.

• On an average, there has been an increase in 57 people in every square kilometer in the country as compared to the previous decade.

• Amongst all the districts of Punjab – Ludhiana has the highest population density of 978 followed by Amritsar with population density of 928.
