Population Studies
Population Growth
• Current population
Population Explotion
• A very rapid growth in population.
Population Cycle
Key terms to help understanding
• Natural increase – means the population is growing because there are more people being born than are dying.
Fantasy Island has a population of 5.
What is the natural increase?
When the birth rate line is above the death rate line the population
is growing.
Stage 1
• Birth rate and death rate are high - low natural increase - low total population
Stage 2
• Birth rate is high - death rate is falling - high natural increase (population growth)
Stage 3
• Falling birth rate - low death rate - high natural increase (population growth)
Stage 4
• Birth rate and death rate is low - low natural increase - high total population
What causes change in populations?
- food supply - war - technological development - health - education - place of women in society
Population distribution (how we spread out over the world) varies
over time.
• What this really means is that people may have gathered in certain areas for certain reasons in the past and now they have moved because the circumstances have changed.
Why is population distribution uneven?
• We don’t like– Too wet– Too dry– Too high– Too humid– Too steep
So we tend to all gather in the nice places.
