World population continues to grow; but at different rates in different regions.
2. How Do We Measure Growth?Birthrate- the number of live births
per 1000 people.
Mortality rate (death rate)- number of deaths per 1000 people.
Rate of natural increase-
birthrate – mortality rate =natural increase
21 births – 4 deaths = 17 ppl. pop. increase
World Population
Growth1999: Population reaches 6 billion
3. Measuring PopulationsWe use a population pyramid to
analyze population.
Population pyramid- graphic device that shows gender and age distribution of population.
4. Not Equally Shared....Climate, altitude and access to
water influence where people live.
People are moving to large cities, changing distribution.
What are some factors which encourage or discourage
population growth?
5. Why People MovePush factors are when people feel
pushed out of their homeland or region.
Pull factors attract people to go to another land.
Examples.......
6. Lots of PeoplePopulation density- average

U.S. 33 people per sq. mile India 389 people per sq. mile
EX.Total Population = Pop. Density
Total Land Area
7. 7,172,472,426 and Still Growing
Carrying capacity- the number of organisms a piece of land can support.
The level of technology can improve capacity.
8. Demographic Transition Model DTM is a model of how the size of a population
changes as a country develops its economy.
Pre-Industrial society:
Births and deaths are
roughly balanced.
Developing Country:
Death rates drop due to
improvements in food supply and
sanitation.
S3:Birth rates decline-
access to contraception,
increased wages, urbanization,
increased status of women, education
for children.
S4: Low birth & death
rates.Birth rates may drop below replacement
