From the desk of

Father Flores Last weekend, Andy Finney of St. Thomas Parish was ordained a deacon and is now known as Deacon Andy Finney. It is great joy that the bishop was willing to come to Coeur d’Alene to ordain Deacon Andy and the four other deacons of that class including Deacon Tom Kilbourne of the Silver Valley. Unfortunately, because of restrictions due to the pandemic, the ordination was not open to the general public; however, we can still be happy that an ordination took place in our town.

This is not the first ordina-tion to take place in Coeur d’Alene, but it has been many years since the last one. Having the ordination in our area can bolster our faith as we see individuals

who have concretely and actively sought God’s will for their lives and have responded. The day of ordination for a dea-con is a glorious day, but the man soon realizes that he has entered into a life that is no longer entirely his own. The ordination is not a personal honor for the man nor is it really about him; rather, it is about the Body of Christ, the Church, which he is now called to serve in this way. A deacon is ordained to serve the parish and often at sacrifice and cost to himself.

We are fortunate to have Deacon Chris in our own parish who exempli-fies this well. Deacon Chris is a parish employee and also a “regular” deacon, and he executes both positions with commitment and dedication. We are so fortunate to have him and his wife Mary, who both do so much for our parish—some of it publicly and in sight of all—but a great deal behind the

scenes and unrecognized by most. The word “deacon” is derived from the Greek verb “to serve” and that is what Deacon Chris does and what Deacon Andy, Deacon Tom and the others will now be able to do in a new way. Clearly, the Lord has called these men into the service of a deacon, but everyone is called by the Lord to serve His Church and our society with the gifts that

2

He has given. In fact, the role of the priest and the deacon is in large part to equip the members of the Church into their own service of the Lord, and this is usually done in the con-text of the home or at work. When we think of service to the

Lord, we might immediately think of doing something within the Mass, but it is better understood as service in the world. The priest and the deacon are here to give the members of the Church the Sacra-ments, to lead them in prayer, and to remind them constantly of their service to God. When Jesus invited the Apostles to become fishers of men, He was calling

them to serve those who would follow Him and to lead them to Himself. This is the format of ser-vice established by Our Lord Himself and so we need their ministry. It is beautiful that we have had the witness of this ordination even though not everyone could be there, but it nonetheless encourages us each, in our own manner of life, to try to better serve the Lord and seek ways to do so. An ordination allows us to see how those individuals are responding concretely and purposefully to God’s call, and we can purposefully do the same. Congratulations to Deacon Andy, Deacon Tom and the others. Let us continue to pray for vocations.

In Jesus and Mary,

Fr. Flores

† Be Purposeful †

A message from Jenny Kenner

Faith Formation & Evangelization Team

WHY AM I PURPOSEFULLY CATHOLIC? About 6 years ago as I sat in prayer, the weight of the promises my husband and I made when we had our children baptized hit me. My immediate thought was, ‘Oh my gosh, I am not equipped for this.’ In truth, I wasn’t. That realization was paralyzing. I shared this with my husband. After many months of anguish, seeking, and prayer, my husband and I made the decision; we had to be all in. From that moment on, we decided to live purposefully Catholic. We decided to live every moment not teaching our children about the faith, but how to love the faith. We wanted our children to love Mary, Jesus, and His Church. To accomplish that, we first needed to love these things with all our hearts. Within a couple of years, I began working at Pope St. Pius X as Coordinator for Children’s Ministry. St. Pius had wonderful classes for kids of all ages, with dedicated catechists and plenty of curriculum resources. It was wonderful! As I began attending workshops and reading articles, however, there was a common thread; catech-esis classes DON’T KEEP KIDS CATHOLIC! In my hurried idealism, I wanted to change the structure of religious education immediately. But what I’ve found is God’s timing is perfect. Over three years, I watched our parish community evolve as God planted seeds and put events into motion. Later, I would realize God was set-ting the stage for our initiative, Purposefully Catholic. All those years ago, God gave me a desire to commit my whole being to live Purposefully Catholic. It is my most heartfelt prayer that my kids grow up in a world where

they’re immersed in this lifestyle. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine God would allow me to be part of re-shaping our catholic culture from consumers of the Catholic faith to lovers of the Catholic faith. I would like to say thank you. Thank you to everyone who is a part of re-shaping our catholic culture so my kids can grow up in a strong Catholic community. Thank you to every per-son committing to live Purposefully Catholic in the hidden areas of their lives as a witness to my children. Thank you to everyone who brings to light the richness and beauty of the Catholic faith and shines it forth as a beacon to draw all those around us closer to Christ and the eternity He has prepared for us. Thank you for living Purposefully Catholic with me.

To Jesus through Mary and St. Joseph,

Jenny

FOOD PANTRY I am writing this article from rural Wisconsin where my daughter and I have spent the past 3½ weeks working on a home that I was very thankful to inherit. The country road high-way signs here include photos of tractors as well as ones showing Amish horses and carriages. We have passed several carriages with families waving to us and have purchased fresh produce, butter and milk from these folks as well. Some-how, during these uncertain times where the world is filled with such unrest, we find their simple ways of life both refreshing and very heart-warming. During our stay, we have also been blessed with beautiful weather that highlights the spectacu-lar hardwood trees dressed in their fall colors, the loons on the lake, and the wonderful, Midwestern camaraderie that makes every day such a joy! I have traveled a bit in my life where the ocean has brought me peace, the wind has given me en-ergy, the sun has warmed my spirit, the flowers showed me life, yet it is our Father and his Son that have made me feel and share true love!

Our St. Pius X Food Pantry family has continued their dedication to the customers that they meet and serve daily. One heartfelt story that was recently shared with me was when a single Mom of two children, who came alone, arrived at the church in need of food and personal

items. As she walked past the St. Francis statue to reach the church’s front door, she admired the beautiful roses that graced the garden. After she was supplied with the items she needed, she humbly asked if she could cut a few roses to give to her daughter because she was having a really bad day. Of course, her request was granted. Our Food Pantry Team goes beyond distributing items to those

in need, they reach out in every way possible on a person-al basis to touch hearts and brighten days! FOOD COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND: Thank you for your generous donations in September! Our wish list for October includes: canned chicken breast, spaghetti noodles, small jars of peanut butter, crackers, tooth-brushes, dish soap, paper towels, laundry detergent and shampoo.

With Gratitude, Kathy Goodwin

Food Pantry Coordinator

October 18, 2020 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.” - MATTHEW 22:21

Everything we are and everything we have belongs to God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given each of us. All God is asking is that we give back a portion of what He gave us. This is the essence of Stewardship. God should be our first priority in everything. All else comes second, especially our money.

For 25 years, Holy Family Catholic School has welcomed all families seeking a high quality, faith-based education regardless of their economic means. The SUCCESS Annual Campaign funds scholarships for

our students, which in turn allows us to pay our excellent teachers and staff a fair and just wage, maintain our beautiful facility and, most importantly, fulfill our mission to promote excellence in

education-both spiritually and academically-for the whole person, thereby nourishing the gifts uniquely given to each by God.
