Strengthened by faith, we can build families, built on divine love, because we perceive a plan bigger than our own ideas and under- takings. Without the trustworthy love of God, human unity would be based only on utility, “not on the goodness of living together, not on the joy which the mere presence of others can give” (51). Our faith helps us build societies of hope and provides meaning in the face of human suffering. Finally, Pope Francis encourages us to speak publicly about our faith in the living God so that his glory might shine through all life in the world: “Could it be the case . . . that we are the ones who are ashamed to call God our God? That we are the ones who fail to confess him as such in our public life, who fail to propose the grandeur of the life in common which he makes possible?” (55). How do you think faith strengthens society? How might speaking of God publicly change our society — and our lives — for the better? THE FRUITS OF FAITH Faith is fruitful: the sign of our faith is the measure of our joy. The saints have all been people who were filled with the joy of the Lord, and this joy bursts forth from their lives in extraordinary ways. Mary is the preeminent model of faith. She took to heart all that she had heard and seen, and the word bore fruit in her life. So we, too, are called to ponder the faith we have received, that the fruits of faith might shine out from our lives. Pope Francis encourages us to turn to Mary, and concludes Lumen Fidei with a prayer we can say to her: Mother, help our faith! Open our ears to hear God’s word and to recognize his voice and call. Awaken in us a desire to follow in his footsteps, to go forth from our own land and to receive his promise. Help us to be touched by his love, that we may touch him in faith. Help us to entrust ourselves fully to him and to believe in his love, especially at times of trial, beneath the shadow of the cross, when our faith is called to mature. Sow in our faith the joy of the Risen One. Remind us that those who believe are never alone. Teach us to see all things with the eyes of Jesus, that he may be light for our path. And may this light of faith always increase in us, until the dawn of that undying day which is Christ himself, your Son, our Lord! “I have come as light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness” (Jn 12:46). In John’s Gospel, Christ reveals himself to be the true light, which dispels all darkness. In his powerful first encyclical, Lumen Fidei (“The Light of Faith”), Pope Francis exhorts us, as disciples of Jesus Christ, to carry this light of faith to the ends of the earth:

There is an urgent need, then, to see once again that faith is a light, for once the flame of faith dies out, all other lights begin to dim. The light of faith is unique, since it is capable of illuminating every aspect of human existence. A light this powerful cannot come from ourselves, but from a more primordial source. (4)

“The Light of Faith” is a historic letter. Pope Francis has called it “the work of four hands” because the first draft was written by Pope Benedict XVI as a companion to his other encyclicals on the theological virtues of hope (Spe Salvi) and love (Deus Caritas Est). When it was not finished before Pope Benedict left office, Pope Francis took the text and carried it forward to completion.

FAITH: A FIRM FOUNDATIONFaith is often described as a journey. Pope Francis

reminds us that faith is our foundation, grounding us in a chaotic world. Through faith, we learn both the memory of the past (the story of salvation) and the future God promises to us. This light of faith shines brightly on our present experience: the hopes and fears, the joys and suf-fering of daily life. Faith awakens us to a relationship with God, the source and end of all things, and to a deeper meaning in our lives.

Knowledge is vital to faith as well, Pope Francis writes, for “faith without truth does not save” (24). Yet, in today’s world, we tend to separate truth from faith. Truth, we imagine, is found in science and that which can be proven, while faith is seen as subjectively different for each person. But without truth, our faith would be simply a beautiful story rather than the source of all reality, life, and love.

As you think back upon your faith journey, who has shared the light of Christ with you? How might you share

the light of faith with others?

THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

The story of salvation is a story of God’s fidelity to his

people, and his fidelity is strong and lasting. We have faith in

God because he has shown himself to be faithful to us.

Jesus Christ is the ulti-mate manifestation of

God’s love and reli-

ability. In Christ’s suffering and death on the cross, the depth of his love for us is made manifest. And in his res-urrection, he shows us that this love can even illuminate the gloom of death!

A real encounter with Jesus changes us. As Pope Francis says in Lumen Fidei, “Those who believe are transformed by the love to which they have opened their hearts in faith” (21). It is then that we begin to see the deepest meaning in life and God’s tremendous love for the world. Through our encounter with Christ, we begin

to see others with the eyes of Christ.

How has your relationship with Jesus changed you? What does it mean to see others with the eyes of Christ?

THE COMMUNION OF FAITHTo be human is to be in relationship. As

much as modern technology has convinced us otherwise, we are not solitary creatures creating our

identities as individuals apart from communities. So too for faith: “Faith is not a private matter, a completely individualistic notion, or a personal opinion” (22). By its nature, faith opens us to the life of the Church, and its place is within her communion.

Indeed, as Pope Francis notes, “it is impossible to believe on our own” (39). Communion is vital because faith is handed down in the living memory of Tradition. Yet the faith that is communicated through the Church is more than just an idea. It is a living faith and a “new light born of an encounter with the true God, a light which touches us at the core of our very being” (40).

This living faith comes forth through the Sacraments and has been handed down through the Creed, the Ten Commandments, and the Our Father. These four elements comprise what Francis calls the “storehouse of memory” (46) of the Christian faith.

And yet, though we are unified in faith, our unity does not come at the expense of each person’s personal rela-tionship with God. When we live in service to others in the body, we come into our own and become truly who we are meant to be: God’s own. When we have received the light of faith, it is impossible to keep this gift for our-selves.

How has participating in the life of the Church helped your faith to grow? When have you most needed your faith?

FAITH HELPS US BUILD SOCIETIESFaith trusts in God’s merciful love, calling us to humil-

ity and courage. The temptation of the modern world is to build our lives on the foundation of money, power, beauty, or knowledge. Yet, without a clear goal, life becomes a series of “unconnected instants” (13), search-ing only for gratification and comfort.
