Exam Preparation – Graphic Products

Your exam is worth 40percent of your final grade and is 2hrs long. It is 20pages long and is a combined question paper and answer book so you answer the questions within the paper.

NB: ALWAYS double check and read the questions accurately so you don’t make a mistake.Look at how many marks are given for each question. You should spend longer on a question worth 6marks compared to a question worth 1 mark. But when you are drawing/rendering or shading take note of the time and do not get absorbed in the question and spend too long on it.

Existing Clocks for young persons

This shape sorting clock is great for developing an understanding of time and routines, as well as colour and shape awareness.

Help children get ahead with these informative flashcards. Featuring a picture of a clock face on the front and the time in words on the reverse, they will help children to learn to tell the time. What material could be used to make these? Why? Does it have to be wipe clean?

This wall clock will look great on any bedroom or playroom wall and will help children to understand how to tell the time. Look at what info has been included on the design.

You may include a nursery rhyme or short story into your design to help children to understand how to tell the time.

You may be asked to create a logo to compliment your design. Do you think a logo for a childs toy/game/book should be simple or complicated in design? What colours could be used?

Materials and Tools needed.

You have used a number of tools and materials in the production of your publicity material. You should be able to name them and be able to explain why you used particular tools on certain types of material.

You should look at the Ppoint – ‘Portfolio Presentation’ which discusses the types of paper and board that you should be aware of.

Why do you think certain graphic products are laminated? Would you need to laminate some of your ideas for this exam question? Why?

Ergonomics and Anthropometrics

Ergonomics - The study of people and their relationship with the environment around them. Whatever you are designing, it must fit the person it is design for (usually called the customer / client). Adults and children come in all shapes and sizes. We all like or dislike colours, texture, sounds, tastes, flavours, forms and shapes. Consequently, when we design products, factors such as these should be kept in mind. When designing a toy there are a number of points to consider. Children learn from sound, sight, colour, movement and other aspects. These all contribute to the ergonomics or anthropometrics of a design.

Anthropometrics - The study of the human body and its movements. The study of the human body and its movement, often involving research into measurements relating to people. It also involves collecting statistics or measurements relevant to the human body, called Anthropometric Data. The data is usually displayed as a table of results, diagram or graph. Anthropometric data is used by designers and architects.

When designing graphic products you must take into account both ergonomics and anthropometrics in order to create a well executed product.

What you have to do...After looking through this Ppoint you now have to create your own Revision Ppoint to help you understand what you may need to do in section 1 of the exam. What will you design in the exam?

After this you then have to create some hand drawn ideas on A4 paper. This size is used as it will be the size of the exam paper.Your ideas should be annotated, labelled, drawn correctly, rendered, shaded, dimensions included, type of material used and why, how it will be put together, will it need to be glued? These are some of the questions that may need answering in this exam question. Remember how long you should spend on this section. Time yourself drawing and shading your designs so you know how quickly you have to work in the exam. Dont forget to revise certain relevant pages from the following website.
